The couple Derek Hough and Shannon Elizabeth, who met on Dancing With the Stars and have been dating for a year, announced their split on Twitter Friday evening.

The pair sent out matching statements on Twitter Friday night but with different pronouns. Are these two better off for breaking up?

"Hi everyone, we wanted you all to know directly from us, that Shannon & I have decided to end our relationship as boyfriend & girlfriend…,"   they each posted in matching Twitter messages. "However, we love and care about each other very much and will remain friends and in each others lives."

A few hours later, the 35-year-old actress — who began a relationship with the professional dancer during the hit show’s sixth season — thanked fans for their understanding. "Thank you everyone for all your sweet words & encouragement — it really means a lot to me!"
