Florida police take to the skies in para-gliders on the 11th September 2009. In a world first, police in Florida are taking to the skies in motorised para-gliders to patrol the ground below. Flying in custom built, bullet proof trikes, specially trained officers of Palm Bay police force will fly 400ft up, equipped with radios, cameras and GPS satellite systems.
Codenamed Operation S.O.A.R, (Search Operations Aerial Response), the four strong team will provide assistance to officers on the ground as a cheaper alternative to helicopters. With one $36,000 unit in their possession and another more modest $16,000 gliding backpack to come, the officers of Palm Bay are all set to make history on November 1st of this year.
