Alex Chilton of “The Box Tops” Fame Dies Of Heart Attack

One of the lates 60′s and early 70′s pop stars, Alex Chilton, has passed away.   At only 16 he had an international #1 hit as the lead sing er of "The Box Tops" with "The Letter."   Talk about precocious!   Anyway, he squandered his great talent with plenty of drug and alcohol abuse – a familiar story in the music business it seems.   No doubt his early death of an apparent heart attack at only 59 was aided and abetted by his years of substance abuse.   One look at his ravaged visage tell you he was a hard hitting user who paid the ultimate price for his self indulgence.

    Classic hit.
Sorry to hear about his substance related death.
RIP and thanks for what will probably remain one of the most recognisable tunes ever…..

What a horrible thing you’ve written! Chilton actually went through a wild period in the seventies (who didn’t?), but was clean and sober since the 80s, was a professional musician and family man. I mean, unbelievably ridiculous, your assumptions. And then someone replies about his “substance related death”….what imbeciles. Chilton isn’t defined by The Box Tops (or for that matter his second band, Big Star), what’s cool about Alex Chilton is that he was in both bands, and then went on to lead a very bizarre but interesting solo career off the beaten path.

Get your facts straight before you just start spreading misinformation.

I think Fox News would be able to deliver a more sincere eulogy for Fidel Castro.

Let me just say that I was sincere about the loss of Alex Chilton.I do not appreciate being called an imbecile in wishing for Alex to rest in peace and thanking him for a memorable song.Mike.
My supposed misguided reference may have ticked you off but I’ll be polite and not resort to any name calling and wish you a nice weekend.Mike.

My Facts are straight – Alex died from damage sustained from long term substance abuse. You might not like the facts that Alex peaked at 16 but its true – you might like to think that dopers get a free pass but they don’t – they die young. Too bad, so sad.
