Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith Has Got Dick Van Dyke Rapping On His New Album

The drummer has recorded an album of songs for children and recruited the 84-year-old ‘Mary Poppins’ actor to lay down some lyrics, under the pseudonym DVD.

Dick said: “At my age, my generation, we are not particularly rap-crazy. Rap has a great beat, but I swear to God, I have never been able to understand one word. I don’t know what they’re saying."

Chad praised Dick’s efforts, however, saying the track wasn’t entirely serious in the first place.  He said: "I am certainly no rapper but I helped guide Dick with it the first day. It was pretty funny. He can come away with it, because it’s supposed to be silly — that’s not his normal thing. He comes from a different world, but he was up for it, man."

The ‘Rhythm Train’ album – which is meant for children and follows the story of a musical train which goes around the world – is a project helmed by singer Leslie Bixle, who wrote the songs and appears with Dick and Chad.   Song titles include ‘Roly Poly in My Guacamole’, ‘Cherry Pants’ and ‘Lotta Dinosaur’. The album is available through the internet.  Photo: Fame Pictures

When I worked in retail I met Dick Van Dyke and he was just the nicest man; exactly what you’d hope Dick Van Dyke would be like. He bought a jacket, asked us where he should go for lunch, and later that afternoon came back just to tell us how much he’d enjoyed lunch at the place we recommended and how much he loved the jacket.
