$100 Million New Royal Yacht As Gift For Queen Elizabeth II

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II is to receive a $100 million gift from her subjects who are in the midst of an economic crisis.  The super deluxe new Royal Yacht would be in honour of her diamond jubilee – 60 years as the British Monarch.

The Guardian reports that in a leaked communication, the Education Secretary Michael Gove proposed that the $100 million purchase should be made “in spite of, and perhaps because of the austere times.”  The letter was to Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt who is the minister overseeing the Jubilee celebrations and to Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg.

Gove said in the letter that the monarch should have her “highly significant contribution” highlighted with something more long-lasting than the parties and other events planned to celebrate her reaching 60 years on the throne.”

“In spite, and perhaps because of the austere times, the celebration should go beyond those of previous jubilees and mark the greater achievement that the diamond anniversary represents.   I feel strongly that the Diamond Jubilee gives us a tremendous opportunity to highlight in a very fitting way the queen’s highly significant contribution to the life of the nation and the Commonwealth.”

“I feel strongly more should be done to achieve a longer lasting legacy. Events such as proms and the party at the palace arranged for the Diamond Jubilee, and street parties, although excellent, are transient.  It would be appropriate to do something that will mark the significance of this occasion with fitting ceremony. My suggestion would be a gift from the nation to her majesty.”

The minister – who described the idea of a Royal Yacht as “excellent” – ended the note with a suggestion that a private donation could be sought for the project if enough taxpayer funds couldn’t be raised.

Imagine how such an extravagant expense would go over in America?
