'The Voice' Season 2 Episode 1 Review: Did You Tune In After The Super Bowl?

The Voice kicked off its second season last night right after the XLVI Super Bowl aired on NBC. Chances are you probably tuned in to watch at least a little bit of NBC’s borderline addictive singing competition; chances also are you got a taste of some of the season’s upcoming talent, some of which is quite amazing (though we’ll let you be the judge of that).

The Voice is an interesting show because it begins with what is known as a “blind audition,” where judges Cee Lo Green, Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton, and Adam Levine make a decision by only hearing the contestant’s voice. I love the premise of this show.

Last night’s show delivered some very interesting and amazing talent. A young girl named Rae Lynn brought a whole bunch of country to the stage with her charming rendition of “Hell on Wheels.” After she finished, Blake Shelton, who you all know to be one of the biggest country singers around, said, “I can make you a country star.” While she wasn’t exactly my cup of tea, any fan of honest, true-blue country music will instantly fall in love with this lil’ blonde lass.

For those of you who watched the show, what do you think of Rae Lynn? Are you going to keep her on your radars? Are you glad she chose Team Blake over Team Levine? Levine definitely wanted her as well.

Jesse Campbell, a single dad, has a very heart-wrenching story, which is — let’s be honest — always a helpful thing to have in a competition of this nature. However, just because you have a good, inspirational story doesn’t mean you can slide by without any talent, and this fellow definitely has some pipes. Before he could finish the first line of the song, all four judges were completely spun around in their seats. They all wanted him. Keep your eyes on him, folks. He could go far. I guessed that he’d choose Team Xtina, and I was right. Christina will be a good coach for him.

How far do you think he’ll go?

One of the more unfortunate performances of the night was by Daniel Rosa, who sang “Animal” by Neon Trees. He got through the entire song without anyone turning around their chair. This kind of situation always makes me sad, but with such a fierce competition, only the best can move forward — and he simply wasn’t the best.

25-year-old Juliet Simms proved to be a rockin’ good time with her rendition of “OH! Darling.” She has one of those deeper, raspy voices that is really meant for one thing and one thing only: rocking out. While she has much talent, and might even get far into the competition, I have a feeling her voice will prove too limiting for the demands of the show. What do y’all think?

Chris Mann majored in classical/opera music in college. His voice is technical, refined, controlled. One of those singers that has a “perfect” voice. Unfortunately, many times people have trouble relating to these types of voices, so I’ll be interested to see where his journey takes him.

One of my favorite moments of the night was when Tony Lucca took the stage to sing. Not only did he knock his song “Trouble” out of the park, he had the chance to get reacquainted with an old friend: Christina Aguilera. Turns out that they performed together on the Micky Mouse Club when they were little. Cute memories for them.

Who was your fave of the night? We want to know!

The judges were up to their usual antics, but they were fun to listen to, as always. The team dynamic is interesting, and I personally like listening to the always annoying amazing Christina Aguilera quarrel with her co-judge Adam Levine (they both have please-oh-please-look-at-me issues). My favorite quote of the night that came out of their banter: “Christina Aguilera is the best singer in the world, but she’s not the world’s best coach,” said Adam Levine.

How’d you react to that? Does Levine’s claim ring true? Give us your thoughts! I have a feeling Adam Levine is walking into this new season with a big head, being that a person from his team won last season. It’s going to be interesting to see who wins this season, and what new talent we’ll discover to release into the big wide world of the music industry.
