Tonight’s show features the men in a do or die competition. Ten contestants will be slashed down to five in no time flat on the first of the live shows.

Elijah Liu is up first tonight with a cover of Rihanna’s “Stay”. Keith Urban thought he kept in control and handled it well. Nicki Minaj bought it as well. Randy Jackson liked his performance better than last weeks, but it was kind of flat. Mariah Carey thought it was one of his better performances. I wasn’t a fan and have yet to really warm up to Elijah.

Cortez Shaw puts his own spin on Bruno Mars‘ “Locked Out of Heaven” and I was feeling it. Keith loved his spirit in the song but he didn’t think it was his best song choice. Nicki thinks her needs to be styled sexier but he loved that his charisma came out. Randy liked the song for Cortez but he didn’t think he’s quite got it yet. Mariah loves his ballads and hopes that people have watched everything he has done and not just this.

Charlie Askew takes on Genesis‘ “Mama” and all I can think is, what the hell?  Keith thinks he’s disingenuous. Nicki is wondering what happened to the kid she liked and she’s upset. Randy is worried for him. The beginning was awful and it ended with a scream. Mariah doesn’t rip him apart because she thinks he heard enough.

Hopefully Nick Boddington will do better with The Goo Goo Dolls Iris- and thank god he does. He sits at his piano and it’s one of his best so far. Keith thinks it was a perfect song choice and he was obviously in his comfort zone. Nicki thinks he’s in his zone at the piano and it was true to him. Randy thought it was a solid performance and Mariah was also happy to see him at the piano.

Burnell Taylor is the real deal. His voice is instantly recognizable as he belts out a ballad. Keith loves him and Nicki thinks he was born to sing. Randy likes how the urgency in Burnell’s voice always grabs him. Mariah is happy that the emotion was in his voice and it was tangible.

Paul Jolley keeps it simple thins week with “Fool for You”. No over singing just straight forwardly belts it out. He tells Keith that he’s like to be a male version of Taylor Swift.  Nicki thought he was solid and she tells him to listen to Keith’s advice. Randy loved the beginning, the end not so much. Mariah thinks the crowd felt what Paul was giving.

Lazaro Arbos absolutely killed it with the old classic “Feelin’ Good”.  If the audience is any indication he’ll do great. Keith tells him that everyone connects with him. Nicki loved it and loves him. She thinks it was a strong vocal. Randy thinks he’s in it to win it. Mariah thinks the song was a bit too low for him.

Curtis Finch Jr. has this competition in the palm of his hand. “I Believe I Can Fly” always goes over well and Keith tells him that he just oozes everything good. Nicki believes he sets the bar everytime out. Nicki tells him that he has a calling to give people hope and Randy says tonight’s competition just began. Mariah thanks him for the performance.

Devin Melez takes the stage for another Spanish/English song and the audience seems to really like him. He reminds me of Marc Anthony who I’ve always loved. Keith thinks once he finds his zone he’s such a strong and gifted singer. Nicki thinks he is stepping into his own and it works. Randy loves his tone and bravado. Mariah loves his whole look and she thinks his jumping between genres and languages is effortless.

Vincent Powell closes the show with the Boys 11 Men classic “End of the Road”. I don’t think he can possibly sound bad ever. Keith thinks his nerves got the better of him. Nicki thinks his voice didn’t come alive and Randy says it wasn’t his best but it was still good. Mariah believes it had moments of brilliance. Tune in tomorrow to see who makes the final cut!
