This morning Angelina Jolie was given some devastating news. Her aunt, Debbie Martin, passed away after battling breast cancer. Debbie was the younger sister of Angelina’s mother Marcheline Bertrand. Angelina was very close to her aunt.
Debbie’s husband Ron Martin spoke to E! news about his wife’s passing. He said “Angelina has been in touch throughout the week and her brother Jamie has been with us, giving his support day by day. They both loved Debbie very much and although Angie is not able to come right now she has sent her love and support which was very nice.” DNA India is reporting Debbie collapsed at home on May 22 due to a seizure. Ron rushed her to the hospital, where Debbie slipped into a coma. Per The Mirror, Debbie’s life support machine was switched off on Friday, and Angelina waited nervously for the news of her dear aunt’s passing.
This is not the first time Angelina was touched by cancer. Her mother died of ovarian cancer in 2007. But Angelina is determined to not let this devastating disease take her life and take her away from her partner, Brad Pitt, and their six children. After learning she has a high chance of developing breast cancer, Angelina underwent an elective mastectomy to reduce her chances of getting breast cancer. Angelina has been heralded as a brave woman for her medical choice.
One of Angelina’s fans took raising awareness of breast cancer to another level. The New York Post is reporting Swedish artist Johan Andersson created an oil painting of a topless Angelina post mastectomy. The proceeds from the sale of the painting will go to Falling Whistles. This is an organization that is rallying for peace in the Congo.
Johan told Art Below “My mother had aggressive breast cancer when I was 15. The thought of her having to have a mastectomy really scared me and she was fortunate enough to have surgery without the mastectomy. The recent news about Angelina stirred an anxiety within me leading me to paint this portrait. There is an underlying awkwardness in her demeanor in juxtaposition to the natural beauty of her face.”
Debbie died just a few weeks after Angelina’s mastectomy. She passed away at Palomar Hospital in Escondido, California.
