Before I delve into this story, I want to address the recent Forbes list of highest earning authors of 2012, and the fact that E.L. James is at the top of that list, with estimated earnings of $95 million. That’s right, $95 million for ONE YEAR! Let me just go over to the corner here and sob for a few hours, and then start writing my own fan fiction erotica based on an internationally bestselling YA novel.
It’s no surprise that fans have been going crazy for any bit of casting rumors for Fifty Shades of Grey because when you look at these numbers and the fanaticism that surrounds these movies, it looks like it’ll be a surefire hit. So even if the source material isn’t necessarily what book lovers might call quality reading, Universal knows they have a hit on their hands – and they’re making sure that whoever they get for Christian Grey, he’ll be up to the task.
On that end, they’ve already turned down several CW and B-list actors, and seem to be solely be aiming for the A-list. There were rumors that Charlie Hunnam was being targeted for the role of Christian Grey, but after E. L. James uploaded a picture of herself with Chris Evans, the rumors have now turned to him.
First, let’s look at whether Evans would even take this role. Would he? Well, he’s less picky about his films, which we’ve already seen over the last ten years. But he already has a massive franchise on his shoulders with Captain America and Marvel, and he’s locked into a pretty time-consuming deal with them right now. I doubt he’d have time to sign on to another franchise, especially when he seems to be focusing his energy and free time on indies and directing.
