There are few actors in Hollywood who want to play the role of Christian Grey in the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey film adaptation more than Ian Somerhalder. While it’s becoming more of a trend for actors to openly admit they really, really want a coveted role, Ian may have taken it above and beyond the usual tactics.
There are several recent photoshoots that can pretty much pass as auditions for FSOG, and then there have been many veiled interviews where he drops hints about how much he wants the part. Not that there’s anything wrong with this – in today’s day and age of franchise films and reboots, movie stars no longer exist in the same realm they used to. Actors know that they need a franchise to break through as a ‘star’, and some of them are willing to go to any means necessary to secure the role.
There’s also the fact that industry sources have stated that Ian’s name is at the top of the list for consideration. Although Ian is a major tabloid figure in his own right, his film career has only recently started to take off. He’s been shooting his first major high-profile film role called The Anomaly in London, and soon he will be returning to film the Vampire Diaries in Atlanta. He needs to make sure that the studio knows that he’s interested, and that he’s willing to get down and dirty if need be – which is probably a huge plus.
The only problem is – Universal has been going for a very artsy approach to Fifty Shades of Grey. Instead of going with a ‘mainstream’ choice like Gus Van Sant, they hired an edgy female filmmaker like Sam Taylor-Johnson. I think this was a fantastic choice, but this means that the studio is legitimately looking at making a quality product here. Will Ian’s CW resume hurt him in the long run, or will his looks, talent, and desperation determination win him the role? Let us know what you think in the comments.
