Apart from Ian Somerhalder, the two names we hear the most connected to the role of Christian Grey in the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey adaptation are Henry Cavill and Matt Bomer. Ian’s already made his desire to play the role very, very obvious, but where do Henry and Matt stand?
Henry’s been asked about his involvement with Fifty Shades of Grey many times, and he’s always said that he won’t make his decision until he reads the script. However, insiders are saying that both a lack of interest and a busy schedule would tie him up for the remainder of the year, even if he was offered the role. According to these sources, Henry’s looking to stay mostly in-house with Warner Brothers, and Fifty Shades of Grey is a Universal film. In addition to that, the film will be shooting in the fall, which directly coincides with filming for The Man From U.N.C.L.E.
So ruling out Henry Cavill – which isn’t necessarily a slam dunk, just that there are a lot of factors against him getting cast – that leaves Matt Bomer. Bomer isn’t necessarily considered A-list or an unknown, and instead falls somewhere in-between. He’s definitely recognizable from White Collar and a few other features, but earlier reports stated that the studio was very much looking at complete unknowns for the cast.
Matt is definitely not a complete unknown. In addition to that, there are a lot of jackass fans who are against his casting because he’s gay. Personally, I don’t see what this has to do with anything, but if the studios are listening to the fans on this one [which I can assure you, they are not], then that may be a detriment. Again, that’s not an issue, since Matt’s name honestly hasn’t been mentioned that much in connection to the role when it comes to studio and filmmaking decisions. There’s also the fact of interest – sources close to Matt also say that scheduling and filming for White Collar and other projects would render him busy when Fifty Shades of Grey is filming.
