The brevity of fame has left a dark abyss in Hollywood’s romantic heart – marriages last as long as a football match and relationships fail quicker than an alcoholic barman. There is no such thing as “true” romance in Hollywood – especially with the new-generation of crawling, desperate stars. There is no Shakespearean romanticism held within the carefully painted walls of Hollywood’s elite, and there are no naively optimistic lovers with moonlight in their Stanislavski eyes.
It’s a cold, dark place for unstable lovers.
However, Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev have been able to overcome the materialistic ideals of an industry that is more focused on financial gains and PR campaigns. The Fifty Shades of Grey Movie casting hype, the numerous public appearances, and the surge in Vampire Diaries’ popularity gave Somerhalder and Dobrev the opportunity to be labeled as “Hollywood’s New Power Couple”. In comparison to the dysfunctional ping pong game of Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, and the teen angst rebellion of Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber, one is able to easily notice Somerhalder and Dobrev’s place in this naïve section of Hollywood society.
He might be an egotistical bitch with Goosebump eyes, and she might be a clingy, possessive lunatic sucking on a straw at Chucky Cheeses, but these inherent personality traits cannot make an iota of difference to their public persona. They come across as gracious, gentle, and nostalgic. Their “secret” romance harks back to classic Hollywood and reminds us that if Ryan O’ Neal and Ali McGraw never said sorry, if Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman still had Paris, if James Dean and Natalie Wood were rebels with a cause, and if Patrick Swayze never died after he held Demi Moore, we would all be heartless cynics. Dobrev and Somerhalder inspire us to head out and buy cheap chocolates and cold wine and hearts blemished by arrows. They give us hope that Hollywood, in all of her materialistic entirety, still has a soul.
However, the question remains whether these two are able to stand the test of time. His unofficial Fifty Shades casting will force this couple into the premier spotlight – the one reserved for the Angelina Jolies and Brad Pitts of the world. Sadly, our knowledge of spotlights serves to remind us that their blazing lights can fade quicker than Romeo’s final breath.
We hope and pray that Somerhalder and Dobrev do not become a Shakespearean statistic in this romantic tragedy that is Hollywood.
