Shocking words from a woman who was once considered to be America’s fitness queen! Jillian Michaels became a household name after working as a personal trainer on NBC’s The Biggest Loser. She’s helped dozens of contestants fight obesity, and has published books and exercise plans to help viewers get in shape. But life has changed for the mother-of-two, who hasn’t been on the show in two years. Now, she’s opening up about how being a mom changes things.
“You learn real quick what matters and what doesn’t,” Jillian confessed during an interview with In Touch Magazine, print edition February 4, 2013. “It used to be easy for me to work out, but I don’t have as much time now. I can’t do my 90-minute yoga sessions anymore, so now I cycle in the morning for 30 minutes.” I’m sure a lot of parents out there will be crossing their arms in satisfaction, pleased to see the fitness guru admit partial defeat. Parenting is time consuming!
But just because Jillian can’t dedicate an entire morning to the gym doesn’t mean she’s given up entirely. “I’m teaching [our kids] early about healthy food and getting them involved with our meals—they’ll be in our backyard garden, hitting the farmers market with us, cooking dinners. [My partner and I] get them doing activities they love, so fitness is fun.” That’s the way to do it! Turn meal planning and exercise into family time. There’s nothing more exciting for a child than to pick and eat a fruit or veggie that he helped to grow!
Jillian returned to The Biggest Loser this season, and says that, despite the challenges of motherhood, it’s made her stricter than ever about health. It’s “made me more no nonsense! I won’t let people get away with things I might have before. I’m away from my family, so you’d better be prepared to work!” Tough words, from a woman who looks to be such a loving mom! But don’t expect an easy ride now that the maternal gene has kicked in; she guarantees this season’s contestants will be pushed further than ever. Are you tuning in?
