As a veteran dance professional on the ABC show Dancing With The Stars Mark Ballas is used to the critiques dished out by the judges, but on Monday night he found out that criticism – no matter how constructive – hurts when it is coming from a friend. Former Dancing With The Stars Pro turned actress, Julianne Hough returned to the show this week as a guest judge, and her critique of Mark and Christina Milian side-by-side foxtrot left Ballas feeling a bit of a sting. Following their performance Hough had this to say about the duo, “There were moments when I felt like choreography-wise, I felt like it was two people standing side-by-side rather than together.” She went on to say this about Milian, … I really want to see her shine. I’ve danced with Mark. You have to stand in front to make sure you’re seen.”
According to US Weekly Mark did not take kindly to Hough’s opinion and what it implied – that he hogs the spotlight. Mark said, “The one comment for me that was a little funny is that I make it all about me … All the critiques were at me, and not at [Milian]. So I thought that was a little hypocritical comment.”
Christina Milian and Mark
This spat certainly won’t help repair their relationship that has been strained since Julianne opened up to opened up to Cosmopolitan about the abuse she endured when living with the Ballas family while studying dance abroad saying, “I was abused, mentally, physically, everything … I was 10 years old looking like I was 28, being a very sensual dancer.” She went on to say that the abuse intensified as she got older telling the magazine that the abused peaked, “When I started hitting puberty, when I started becoming a woman and stopped being a little girl.”
Hough never named her abuser but it was speculated that she was talking about Mark’s father, Corky Ballas since not only was he her dancing coach but she was residing with him while studying dance in London. When the article hit the press Corky was said to be very upset that Julianne would insinuate that she was abused while under his care. Corky’s response to her revelation does seems suspect since Julianne neither named or blamed him in the article, so one would think the natural reaction would have been sympathy and not anger.
For her part Julianne did forewarn the dancers and fans of the show that she was not going to be wearing kiddy gloves as a judge writing on her twitter, “Cannot wait for next week on #dwts the “angel with devil horns” is back!! Watch out!…” Watch out indeed!
