Why is it that the media begins speculation on a woman’s weight either the second she announces a pregnancy or delivers her baby, in this case, Prince George? It seems that even royalty like Kate Middleton doesn’t get more than a 24 hour pass before her body is disected. She graced the stairs of St. Mary’s Hospital in London looking radiant, but beneath the makeup was the face of an exhausted new mom. She was also ripped apart in certain circles for still having a baby bump.

If you’ve had a child then you know that the bump doesn’t go away (quite literally) overnight! OK Magazine’s UK edition has a cover story speculating on how fast Kate will return to her atheletic body. It even includes what is supposed to be a Duchess Shape Up plan which is quite ridiculous. Even the publisher of OK agrees as the magazine has actually issued an apology for such an inappropriate cover.

Here’s the thing, it was published in part because our culture thrives on the notion of fast weight loss and celebs transforming their bodies for the sake of publicity and sharp photo shoots. If this hadn’t been a feature on the Duchess would there be an uproar? Probably not. Kim Kardashian’s massive weight gain kept magazines flying off shelves for 6 months, didn’t it? We like to believe that if a celeb can drop weight fast then maybe there is the same type of hope for middle America’s waistlines, but it’s a false reality. Celebs have trainers, meal services, photo shop and airbrushing. With all of those components anyone could grace a cover and look hot.

Perhaps people became a little more sensitive this week because Kate and Prince William tried to present themselves as being as normal as possible in spite of their lineage – and we really shouldn’t pick on normal new moms that still have a baby bump! In fact it is normal to be swollen for as long as two weeks after delivery and if a c-section was done then most doctors insist on no exercise for 6 weeks. Obviously Kate had a regular birth but I’m pretty sure the furthest thing from her mind is dropping weight… well maybe NOT quite the furthest! Right now she just wants to not hurt anymore and bond with her son.
