It’s been reported that just days after Prince William has left his RAF post, the two guard dogs that were used as extra security for him were put down and euthanized because they weren’t needed anymore.
William, who is vocal about his support and love for animals, will definitely be unhappy when he finds out this news. Kate Middleton is probably inconsolable after this act of brutality. We know how Kate and Will love their dogs!
What kind of barbarism allows the base to kill the dogs just because they had finished serving their military purpose? In this day and age, strong and healthy dogs can be given to any number of the numerous animal shelters – even with medical conditions. According to the report, the animals were put down because the military determined that the two dogs [a Belgian Shepherd and a German Shepherd] could not be ‘re-deployed’ or ‘re-homed’ with a family.
A source explains, “Brus and Blade were in a two-dog section set up specifically to protect William. They patrolled the station to protect military personnel, equipment and facilities. But once the prince left the unit was closed.” The report specified the health troubles that the animals were facing, explaining, “Nine-and-a-half-year-old Blade [the German Shepherd] had spine and hip trouble that meant he faced being put down for medical reasons. Brus [the Belgian Shepherd], 7½, did not react well to other animals and had behavioral problems which meant he could not be sent to a kennel.”
I don’t know – if these were humans and had finished serving in the military, they wouldn’t be ‘put down’ just because they couldn’t re-assimilate into society. I can understand, even if I hate, that Blade was put down for medical reasons. But Brus getting put down because of behavior problems is awful – there are many alternatives to that solution, including re-training him, and sending him to a behavioral specialist. Even if it takes several months to get him back to being normal, wouldn’t that be better than killing him? I suppose the military has more pressing priorities, but it still seems like they took the last resort when there were other avenues open to them.
