The waiting sure is long between episodes of our favorite show THE VAMPIRE DIARIES.  Tonight’s show is called, “American Gothic,” and on tonight’s show Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) are both concerned about Elena’s state of mind and are determined to do what’s best for her, but she makes it clear that helping her will be difficult.  Did you watch last week’s episode?  We did, and you can get up to date before tonight’s show, here!

On the last episode Elena realized that Elena needs some time away from Mystic Falls, Damon took her to New York City, where he lived and partied hard in the 1970s. When Rebekah also showed up in New York, she was impressed with Elena’s secret agenda. Flashbacks revealed Damon’s hedonistic life in the underground club scene and a complicated encounter with Lexi.  Meanwhile, Caroline and Stefan tried to convince Klaus that it would be in his own best interest to help them track Silas down, and Bonnie struggled to keep her grasp on reality and do the right thing.

On tonight’s show RACE FOR THE CURE — Elena and Rebekah take off in search of Katherine and find themselves in a small town in Pennsylvania, where Elena has a surprising encounter with another old acquaintance — Elijah (guest star Daniel Gillies). Stefan and Damon are both concerned about Elena’s state of mind and are determined to do what’s best for her, but she makes it clear that helping her will be difficult.

Elena and Rebekah are not loving their Katherine-chasing road trip. Rebekah wants to move on, but Elena wants a snack – she goes in for a bite and the prospective victim calls her Katherine. Seems the naughty girl compelled her to let her feed from them and to forget about her unless they were talking to her.

Damon and Stefan are on a gas run for Damon’s classic car that the girls abandoned. Seems the boys are also on a Katherine chase. They’re headed to Willoughby, Pennsylvania! Damon hopes Rebekah gets the cure so he can off her. Damon tells Stefan that Elena without her humanity is a stone cold bitch that can’t be trusted!

Klaus is in horrible pain from the near-death blow Shane/Silas dealt him. He’s trying to dig out the white oak stake and is tearing up his back in the process. Caroline comes in and finds him struggling. Klaus tells her he feels like he’s dying. Only it’s not Caroline – it’s Silas in disguise. Klaus demands he show him his real face. Silas tells him he will bring him nothing but misery until he finds the cure for him. Klaus collapses in agony.

Elena finds Katherine and Katherine chokes her out until Rebekah give her a royal smack down and tells her she picked a good place to die!! Oooh! Girl fight! They demand the cure from her and Katherine asks why she isn’t all in a bunch about Jeremy dying. Katherine realizes Elena has her humanity switched off. Elena tells her that they need to quit wasting time before Stefan and Damon catch up to them.

Katherine says she wants to bargain the cure for Klaus to give up his death wish on her. Rebekah takes Katherine’s cell phone and Elena peruses it. She’s got a 2 pm appointment with a mysterious “M” that Elena plans to take on her behalf. Katherine looks displeased.
Caroline – the real Caroline – shows up at Klaus’ to find him in torment. He’s wary, thinking she’s still Silas. He demands she prove it and she acts like herself, so he knows it’s still her. He tells her about Silas’ attack and she questions why he was attacked. He asks for her help. He reminds her that if he dies, all of them will die with him as his offspring. That catalyzes Caroline. He asks her to cut the stake out of him. Ouch.

Damon and Stefan are in Willoughby but wonder why Katherine picked that particular little town. The brothers discuss that they may have trouble bringing Elena home since she’s got an original as her bodyguard. Damon is pissed off about the girls snapping his neck, stealing his car and ditching him in New York.

Elena comes back from the bathroom after giving herself a little Katherine makeover which Rebekah says is not slutty enough. Elena takes all of Katherine’s jewelry and jacket although Rebekah has to make her cooperate. Katherine tells Elena she’ll never pass as her. Elena practices her attitude until she has it down pat. Then she demands Katherine’s shoes. The final insult – you never take a woman’s shoes!
Elena waits for “M” in the gazebo in the park while Rebekah babysits Katherine. She mentions how she got her brothers tangled up as well as Damon and Stefan. Rebekah laughs at her and says it’s pathetic that she had to compel a whole town into liking her.

Katherine tells her there’s not enough cure for her and Elena and she tells her that Elena doesn’t want it. Just then the boys show up. They want to know where Elena is.

M shows up at the park – it’s Elijah! And he kisses her! Whoa! Katherine’s been having a fling with Klaus’ hotter brother! You go girl. Elena doesn’t seem to mind the Katherine masquerade while she’s lip-locking the original hunk.

Elijah tells Elena he missed her. He asks her if she has the cure with her. She plays along, telling him it’s in a safe place. She starts to walk away and he grabs her and asks her where Katherine is and calls her Elena.

The boys interrogate Katherine on where Elena is – she tells them she’s with Elijah and that he’s probably killed Elena by now. Rebekah finally tells her where she was supposed to meet him. Stefan says Elijah was going to broker the deal with Klaus – cure for a détente on killing her. Katherine reluctantly agrees to cooperate.

Caroline is cutting through Klaus’ back making a few jokes as she goes. She can’t find the nub of the stake. As she digs in with the dagger, he screams in pain. She yanks out the dagger and tells him he needs to suffer for what he’s done. She tells him if he wants her help, he has to call off his kill Tyler crusade.

Elijah calls Katherine and gets Stefan. Elijah threatens him and Stefan lets him know that they’ve got an original on their team too. He says he just wants the cure. Elijah tells him that Rebekah is going to off Katherine as soon as she hands over the cure. Elijah tells him if Katherine is killed, he’ll take out Elena immediately.

Elijah tells her that he and Katherine have a strictly business arrangement and he’s aware of Katherine’s flaws. Elijah tells her that she’s not just a vampire – he realizes she’s turned off her humanity and wants to know why. She tells him Katherine killed Jeremy. Apparently she lied to him about that and Elena says “Duh.”

Damon and Rebekah escort Katherine home and she searches her safe. She tells them it’s gone. She swears it was really there. Damon says the house doesn’t look like the Katherine he knows. She tells him he doesn’t know her at all.

Rebekah wants to know where the cure is and lunges at Katherine. Damon stops her and tells her to search upstairs. He ruminates on where he would keep his most prized possession. He says he would want it close, but not on him. He looks at her aquarium which has a little treasure chest but no fish. He sticks his hand in to grab it and screams – it’s vervain water!

Katherine shoves Damon’s head into the water, but has to stop when Rebekah comes down. Katherine hands it over to Rebekah and runs for her life. Rebekah considers the vial in her hand and Damon tells her “don’t even think about it.”

Rebekah stares at the vial. Damon tells her they need to talk about it. She tells him that her taking the cure is the best thing that will ever happen to him. He reminds him it’s better for him if Elena doesn’t have the cure. Rebekah swigs the cure just as Stefan comes in and screams “no!” Rebekah collapses onto the couch. Damon and Stefan are crushed.
Klaus begs Caroline to help him – he says he can feel the shards of the stake moving toward his heart. She tells him she needs to know she can trust him. He reminds her Tyler tried to kill him. Caroline reminds him he’s tried to kill most of them and most of them have tried to kill him.
They argue. Then Klaus realizes the pain is gone. He tells her the pain was never there – that Silas got inside his head. He takes Caroline’s hand and tells her she brought him back by taking his mind off of it. She turns away from him, scared. If he can make one as powerful as Klaus think he was dying, she wonders what he can do to the rest of them.

Stefan and Damon argue as Rebekah comes to. Elijah tells Elena he’s sorry about Jeremy. Elena tells him the Katherine he fell in love with hundreds of years ago is gone. She tells him there’s nothing left of Ekaterina. She says that Damon and Stefan seem to think there’s still part of her inside what she’s become, too. Elena quotes a letter he wrote saying to hang on to her compassion – that it was a gift.
Elena is knocked out of the way, neck broken – Katherine’s there, apologizing for being late…

Stefan asks Rebekah how she feels. She says she feels alive and good. Damon says he can kill her now and throws a knife at her. She catches it with lightning speed and the cut heals instantly. They realize they’ve been duped by Katherine (yet again).

Katherine tells Elijah that Elena will wake up just fine. He wants to know why she killed Jeremy. He asks her why she’s compelled to torment Elena when she’s living the same life that Katherine has. She tells him Jeremy was collateral damage and she was just doing what she had to do. He asks Katherine if he’s just a means to an end. She promises him he’s not and tells him she loves him. He says he doesn’t believe her. She tries to stop him because she can’t make a deal without him. He tells her good-bye and walks away.

Katherine is at her “friend’s” house –the one Elena tried to eat. She’s been keeping the cure for her. Her buddy asks what it is that she’s been holding for Elena and she tells her it’s her freedom…
