Surprise, surprise – Hollywood is still sexist. Despite the fact that the Hunger Games: Catching Fire was the highest grossing movie of the year, with Frozen in a close third place, Hollywood still seems determined to put men in a higher echelon of earning power than women. Because really, with Catching Fire beating Iron Man 3, shouldn’t Jennifer Lawrence be earning equal to Robert Downey Jr.?
In fact, the only woman to break into the top 10 list is Angelina Jolie. Jolie was the top-earning actress in the calender year for 2013, reportedly raking in around $33 million. Contrast this to Robert Downey Jr.’s $75 million. Plus, her income falls on the lower end of the male earning list, with Jolie earning the same as the least-earning man in the Top 10 list, Denzel Washington. Seriously, gender inequality much?
However, what’s interesting is that Angelina is so far ahead of other Hollywood actresses, especially Jennifer Aniston. While Aniston did fall in the Top 10 list for women [along with franchise queens Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone, and Kristen Stewart], she was still far behind Jolie. However, most of Aniston’s $20 million earnings seemed to have come from endorsement deals and her business contracts, because how would she have earned that based on her movies? She really only had one hit in 2013 – We’re The Millers. And her last movie before that was Wanderlust in 2012, which was an utter flop.
Unlike Jolie, who earned a huge paycheck for Maleficent plus her directing fee for Unbroken, Aniston doesn’t have a varied film resume to boast all that money. Instead, she has the business acumen and wherewithal to make intelligence choices about her investments, which has put her on this list. Isn’t it kind of sad though, that the once high-earning Friends actress is being beat by 20-somethings? It really says a lot about the state of Hollywood, of which Angelina Jolie is of course an exception. Jolie’s a worldwide movie star with unparalleled cache at this point, and Aniston is just…. a mediocre comedy star.
