CeeLo Green Apologizes For Twitter Commentary Saying It's Only Rape If Person's Conscious

It hasn’t been a good week for CeeLo Green. TBS canceled his reality show, he was sentenced to three years of probation, and he caused Twitter outrage for comments he made on the site. The singer is now apologizing for the controversial statements.

Last week, CeeLo pleaded no contest to one felony account of giving a woman ecstasy without her knowledge. He was sentenced three years of probation and was ordered to complete 360 hours of community service. He also has to attend 52 Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous meetings.

The incident occurred in 2012 and the woman claimed she woke up next to CeeLo without remembering what happened. However, a rape charge was rejected in 2013 because there was not enough evidence. The Grammy winner’s Twitter controversy began after his sentencing. He wrote a series of tweets about the case and rape victims.

“People who have really been raped REMEMBER!!!” and “If someone is passed out they’re not even WITH you consciously! so WITH Implies consent.”  He continued, “When someone brakes on a home there is broken glass where is your plausible proof anyone was raped.”

He basically implies that it’s only rape if the victim is conscious. Needless to say, his insensitive comments were quickly matched with criticism. He engaged in a defensive dialogue with a few people about the topic before deleting the tweets, offering an apology, and ultimately deactivating the account.

His Twitter apology read: “Let me 1st praise god for exoneration fairness & freedom! Secondly I sincerely apologize for my comments being taken so far out of context. I only intended on a healthy exchange to help heal those who love me from the pain I had already caused from this. Please forgive me as it was your support that got me thru this to begin with. I’d never condone the harm of any women. Thank you.”

CeeLo reactivated his Twitter account this morning and offered another apology. “I truly and deeply apologize for the comments attributed to me on Twitter. Those comments were idiotic, untrue and not what I believe.”

Idiotic indeed, but do you accept his apology? Tell us what you think and leave a comment.
