Tonight’s episode of Chicago Fire kicks off with an explosion in a building. Chief Boden radios his crew inside and tells them to all abort. The ceiling caves in, and once the smoke settles everyone begins panicking, Mills is seriously injured and they can’t find Dawson or Shay anywhere. They find Gabby trying to perform CPR on Shay’s lifeless body, there’s a pool of blood underneath her head.

Flashback to Leslie Shay’s first day at 51. Gabriela introduces her to the crew, and Leslie announces that she is gay and offers to be Kelly’s new roommate.

Six weeks later, Herman asks Otis to do a bank run for him. Mills arrives at work and announces that the doctor has cleared him. He reassures the Chief that he is “good as new” and ready to get back to work. Gabby arrives and gives Mills a cold greeting and says “welcome back” before she rushes past him. She heads inside and stops at Leslie Shay’s picture on the wall.

In the break room, a blond woman arrives and introduces herself to Gabby. She says that her name is Sylvie and she is the new paramedic. Gabby isn’t thrilled that they are replacing Leslie Shay. Chief calls Gabby in to his office, and says that he is putting through her paperwork so that she can resume her placement at 105.

Kelly still hasn’t been to work, he got time off after Leslie’s death, but he was supposed to return back to work a week ago. Everyone has called him, but he isn’t returning their calls, he is officially MIA.

The guys run in to Truck 66 while they are fueling up, and toss insults at the other crew. A call comes over the radio for a house fire, the first company on the scene is in charge. Both trucks race to the fire, but Casey and his crew arrive first. They rush inside when they learn that there is a man trapped in the basement. The stairs cave in and they have to use a harness to get him up out of the basement while he is gasping for air. Gabriela and Sylvie work on him outside of the ambulance, and Gabby gives her a crash course on fire victims and inserting breathing tubes. Sylvie wants to drive him to the hospital, but Gabby tells her she has to earn that.

After the fire is under control, Casey gets in to a fight with Welch and the guys from Truck 66 and the Chief screams at him to pack up and leave the scene. Chief Boden calls Casey in to his office later, and lectures him that he needs leaders now more than ever, Casey apologizes and says he will go find AWOL Kelly.

[11:04:59 PM] Amanda Austin: After they get back to the station Sylvie takes Gabby aside and tells her that she knows she was close to Shay and she isn’t trying to replace her. Gabby rushes off and corners Casey and begs him to ask her to marry him again, she says she did them both a favor by not answering him before because they wouldn’t have wanted their engagement on that day. He says he is going to ask her again and “do it right this time” and hugs her and reassures her that he loves her.

Casey pays Kelly a visit and finds him chopping wood at his cabin, he offers him a beer. Casey cuts right to the chase and asks him if he is coming back to 51. Kelly says that the house is cursed and there is nothing but misery there, he plans to buy part of a boat-cleaning business up by Gray’s Lake. Casey thanks him for the beer and heads to the truck. He grabs Boden’s log which he still writes in hand, and shows Kelly all of the lives they have saved on every call, and reminds him that Shay’s badge on the wall doesn’t represent death, it represent the lives that they have saved. Back at the station Sylvie is bonding with Otis. She admits that she left her fiancé a few months ago, she got cold feet, and that is why she moved to Chicago.

Mouch and his wife meet up with Chief Boden and his wife Donna for dinner. Chief Boden really doesn’t want to be there and pleads with Donna to let them skip desert, but Donna insists that he starts socializing more outside of work and relaxes and has a good time.

Peter Mills learns that his paternal grandfather is still alive and lives in Chicago, and gets a copy of his family tree. He has no idea that his grandfather was still alive, his mother told him that he had passed away.

At the station Gabby rushes in to Casey’s office and asks if they can reschedule their thing with his sister, because she is going out to lunch. She reveals that Boden is getting her transfer paperwork ready, and they are interrupted by an emergency call for a car accident. They all rush to the scene and find a car flipped over on a water line, the woman in the passenger seat is unconscious and drowning. They push the car back over and pull the woman out. Gabby panics when she doesn’t have the proper tubing to work on her airway, but Sylvie surprises her by stepping in and making do with what they have and saving the woman.

Mouch has plans to take Chief Boden on another double date and got tickets for a Led Zepplin cover band. While he is waiting out front for the Chief to get out of work, the guys tell Mouch that the Chief snuck out the back door. Mouch is disappointed and heads to his car, but the Chief feels guilty and surprises him and tells him that he will go to the concert.

Gabby heads to therapy, she has apparently been going for the past five weeks, but every session she just sits on the couch and stares at the counselor. He finally breaks the ice and tells her that he knows first responders, and they have to do things “whether they are ready or not.” Gabby breaks down and sobs that she and Shay traded places and when the beam came down, Shay was standing right where she was supposed to be standing.

Kelly returns to work, and Casey meets him out front and tells him that it is good to have him back. Casey and Kelly head up to Kelly’s apartment to clean out Shay’s stuff. Kelly says he can’t stay here anymore, he has been sleeping at the cabin since the accident. Casey invites him to stay at his place in the spare bedroom for a few weeks. He finds a DVD that he and Shay made when they were drinking and videotaped their “roommate contract,” he pops it in and watches the video on the TV and breaks down when Shay’s face comes on the TV screen.

THE END!
