Chicago PD RECAP 3/19/14: Season 1 Episode 9 "A Material Witness"

Tonight a new and riveting episode of CHICAGO P.D. airs.  In “A Material Witness”  A case close to home when the intelligence unit takes on a gang shooting with one living witness, Olinsky’s daughter.  In responding to a call Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) and Burgess (Marina Squerciati) discover a gunshot victim and the only witness is Lexi Olinsky (guest star Alina Taber).

The shooting is tied to a Latin gang. To protect Olinsky’s (Elias Koteas) daughter, Voight (Jason Beghe) takes the case from the Gang Unit. Ruzek (Patrick Flueger) pulls up Burgess to help with an undercover mission that he hopes will help solve the case.

On the last episode Voight (Jason Beghe) is assigned a new Internal Affairs handler, Stillwell (guest star Ian Bohen) who proves to be suspicious of Voight’s actions. During an investigation involving a gambling ring Voight is forced to work with his former partner from the Gang Unit, Shi (guest star Mark Dacascos). At the same time Halsted (Jesse Lee Soffer) remains fixated on Lonnie Rodiger (guest star Matthew Sherbach) and enlists Jin’s (Archie Kao) help to gather more information. Meanwhile, Ruzek’s (Patrick Flueger) inflated ego leads Olinsky (Elias Koteas) to take him down a peg and offer a great opportunity to Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins).   Did you watch the last episode? Hank is sitting in an interrogation room; a man comes in and apologizes to him and un-cuffs him. They’re now talking Hank says that he’s the boss until he’s replaced, Hank asks about detective Sumner and how she’s doing; he admits she isn’t working for him. The man tells Hank that he’ll do what he wants him to do or else he’ll be put into prison. Adam asks Alvin about Hank being arrested; Alvin says that it was a mistake and takes Adam’s phone as it vibrates. Adam wants his phone; apparently his fiancé sent him images that he’d not like to share to others. Kim and Kevin are eating doughnuts in their squad car, their interrupted by a call from HQ needing to head somewhere.

They arrive and see a man who’s been shot, the ambulance is there and the paramedics are treating the man. Kim asks if there was anyone around, they points her to the witness who’s Lexi; Alvin’s daughter. She tells Kim that she saw the shooter; the mother of the victim arrives crying asking what has happened to her baby. Hank arrives at HQ Erin asks what happened last night because everyone knows he got hitched; Hank asks Lexi how she’s doing. Alvin arrives and asks Lexi what happened, she says that she was out at a part late and saw the shooting. Alvin tells Erin that his daughter doesn’t testify to anything.

Kid who was shot was named Russell Thompson the shooting was due to Mexican gang sending a message to the Black gang. A man asks Alvin for the witness, Alvin says there are none; but the man detective Stark knows that Lexi is a witness. Hank shuts the door to his office and tells detective Stark he’s off the case. Stark leaves the HQ, Antonio asks what that was all about and Hank tells him to gather up the gang. Erin is talking to Lexi about Russell, turns out she was hanging out with him and he was a nice guy. A big guy walked up to Russell in the alley way and they argued, apparently the big guy was named Kalaka. Sumner brings a list of all drug busts, Hank asks her to go get more files of arrests of males for other reasons. Alvin walks his daughter downstairs; he tells her to wait and talks to Kevin. Alvin wants his notepad and tells him if anyone asks he lost his crime scene notes. Antonio is interrogating a man named Kenneth, who was the person who held the party last night; he admits to Russell bringing weed to the party.

Antonio gets up and talks to Jay and Erin about it, he thinks they should go speak to Russell’s mother. Kim and Kevin talk to Platt, but their interrupted and Adam asks Kim to go with them. Kevin is now stuck with having Peterson as his partner, due to Platt being such a nice woman. Platt tells Hank that Stark was seen asking questions around the scene of the crime, to give him a heads up. Adam and Kim are with Sheldon, they believe that the person who shot Russell is affiliated with the Latin priest. They need Kim to play a tourist undercover and plant a tracker, Jay appears wanting to talk to Sheldon. Sheldon points at the door as Kim and Adam leave, Jay shuts the door. Sheldon tells him that the person whose credit card he’s tracking has been at a local depot and bought some things there, Jay leaves. Antonio is speaking to Russell’s mother, she mentions a man named Timak that Russell looked up to. Kevin gets coffee for him and his temporary partner, as he gets in the car they’ve got a call. They find four members of the Latin Priest dead; it looks like a gang war is going down.

Hank is briefing his team about the four men who were part of the Latin Priest, Kim tells them that she knows who Timak is because they’ve had calls about him and his father used to beat the crap out of him. Hank calls Adam into his office, he asks who gave him the opportunity to call the shots; he’s talking about the undercover work he wants Kim to do. Adam explains himself and how it’s for Alvin, Hank tells him to leave. Hank walks up to Sheldon and tells him that if he remembers him saying that he’ll need to go off the books to help one day and that it only was for him.

Jay walks into the house of the man who he believes is a pedophile, man’s father defends him and tells him to leave. Jay gets into the car with Erin, she asks what happened and he tells her to just drive. Kim is standing around as a tourist with Adam nearby, A boy on a skateboard steals her phone which was a tracker. Kevin and his partner arrive at the scene of the crime a man is about to burn a house to the ground, he has a knife jabbed in his neck. Kevin tells him to not remove it; the woman behind him removes it wanting to kill him. Kevin tells Peterson to call an ambulance as he’s checking if the man is okay on the ground after cuffing the woman to an iron fence. Alvin, Lexi and Erin are together they hear a knock at the door.

It’s Hank he walks in and asks how Lexi is holding up, she asks about Russell and it turns out that he’s dead. Lexi wants to know if they’ll catch the killer, he replies with telling her they’re trying to. Alvin doesn’t want his daughter to testify, Hank gets a call to go out and Alvin says he’ll go with him. Hank tells him to stay, to protect his family in case. Alvin stays. Hank, Antonio, Erin and Jay arrive at a house, they’re looking around for Tamarcus. They ask the little girl with her mother where he is, they find out he’s upstairs. Antonio and Hank go upstairs; they end up getting shot at.

Hank and Antonio are hiding behind cover as shots are being fired; when they stop and Timak is reloading they go in guns blazing. They get into the room and find him running; Erin ends up catching up to him and tackling him. Hank is now interrogating him, asking him about where Kalaka is at. Sumner arrives with folders on Timaks house; she found out that he bought his mother’s house with drug money. Sumner is talking to him and telling him that she can take away his house, threatening him to make a deal; bring them Kalaka alive and they’ll let his mother keep the house. Adam and Kim are driving towards the tracker which was in the phone the kid stole; Kim accidentally catches a glance at Adam’s phone to see a racy photo. Erin tells Hank and the team about someone who looks like Kalaka seen at a barber shop. Hank talks to Jay about to leave the pedophile case go; Jay tells him that he has no right to say anything because of him being arrested.

Jay tells Hank also that he believes Lawny is going to kill another kid. Hank throws him out of his office. Adam and Kim arrive at the home where the tracker brought them to; the old woman answers the door and tells them the kid has a problem with stealing. Adam tells her that he steals and sells the phones to gangs; the old woman says that he doesn’t interact with gangs. They end up hitting a dead end with their lead. Erin and Antonio arrive at the barber shop Kalaka was last seen, they ask if Kalaka was there and the man who works there says he hasn’t been around. They find PCP in barbershop; they ask to see what he has behind his door. The barber shop owner comes clean and tells them his son and the gang has taken over his establishment and are getting him to get the licenses to have the chemicals. Antonio fins a secret basement, inside of it there’s a chair with a lot of blood and they also find a finger there which Erin believes is Kalaka’s.

Erin tells Hank what they found at the barber shop, they believe that the Latin Priests decided to torture Kalaka for starting a gang war they never wanted. Erin speaks to Jay, she wants him to talk to her because she’s his partner. Jay tells her that she doesn’t want to know and walks away. Adam is outside, he gets another picture from his fiancé Wendy; he calls her and says he loves the pictures, but she needs to stop because it’s distracting. She ends up sending one to him right after he hangs up, Adam gets his phone stolen right after also. The kid runs onto the train and gets away, Adam doesn’t look happy at all since there’s many personal things there. Adam decideds to run after the train on foot to the next stop, the kid gets off the train and walks away looking at the phone.

Adam decides to follow him, Kim arrives by car to meet up with Adam; they find the house the kid entered. Adam kicks down the door and is searching for the kid with Kim, while looking around Adam finds a ton of cell phones hidden in a pantry in the kitchen. Kim finds the family in the living room, Adam finds out that the kid who stole the phone before is the culprit. Adam says that the old woman will give him an address or else he isn’t leaving. Adam and the team are given an address and they arrive at the place. They find a bunch of people who’re are putting cell phones into boxes, getting ready to send them off. Erin goes on her own and finds a door, she calls for Hank to come see what she found and it’s Kalaka tied up.

Antonio and Hank are now interrogating Kalaka, though it’s more aggrieve and involves a beating. Hank is really beating up Kalaka asking him about shooting Russell; Antonio has to hold him back. Kalaka doesn’t look like he’s going to break easily; they find his record and see that he’s been arrested several times. Platt tells Alvin to be strong, because it could end up going to trial. Alvin gets upset knowing this, his daughter and wife arrives. Alvin talks to them and tells his daughter that she’s now been recognized as a witness for the crime, if she testifies then she might be targeted by the Latin Priests; she wants to do it to have the gang be put away for good. Lexi looks at the the men who were suspects and points out who shot Russell. Hank takes Kalaka to the squad car, not in a nice way a lot of smashing his head against the car is involved. Antonio talks to the man who owns the barber shop, he tells him that he’s opened an account for him to put his disability checks to them instead so that the gang will never know the difference. The man is overjoyed and thanks Antonio for what he did. Sumner brings more files to Hank; he’s not impressed yet and asks her to find my files for him. She wants to be of use, but Hank doesn’t trust her completely. Hank is now at a crime scene and finds Edward there, they make some small talk and Hank leaves right after.
