Gang Related Recap 5/29/14: Season 1 Episode 2 “Sangre Por Sangre”

Gang Related Recap 5/29/14: Season 1 Episode 2 “Sangre Por Sangre”

Tonight on FOX a new show called Gang Related continues with an all new episode. On tonight’s episode, Ryan tries to find the rival gang members who shot Carlos to stop a feud from turning into a war as well as hide his own involvement in the matter. Elsewhere, Ryan finds himself falling for Jessica.

On last week’s GANG RELATED the episode centered on Detective Ryan Lopez, a rising star in Los Angeles’ elite Gang Task Force who longed before he became a cop, pledged allegiance to a different band of brothers – a powerful Latino gang called Los Angelicos. When Ryan’s best friend and police partner were senselessly killed by a notorious gang member, he teamed up with long time Task Force member Cassius Green (RZA), who had been at the forefront of the city’s war on organized crime. Despite his profession, Ryan was still beholden to the gang’s leader, Javier Acosta, the father figure he had tried to make proud his entire life and the man who masterminded his entry into the police force. It’s a secret that had been held for a decade by Ryan, Javier and Javier’s sons: cold-blooded gang lieutenant Carlos; and straight-laced investment banker Daniel, Ryan’s childhood best friend. But Ryan was starting to realize that he might be more dedicated to being a cop than he is to Los Angelicos. He was respected by his team, including Tae Kim, Veronica “Vee” Dotsen and Task Force leader Sam Chapel, Ryan’s other surrogate father figure, whose estranged daughter, Jessica, is the city’s Assistant District Attorney.  Did you watch last week’s episode?  If you missed it we have a full and detailed recap, right here for you.

Ryan sits and tells Carter that he’s right – he says – you’re right about all of it. Carter sits and Ryan says he killed his partner. He says they were drinking and they were drunk and they should have called it in and waited for backup but Tanner went in and in the haze they got separated. He says he let Tanner and his family down. Ryan says he if he had just stopped him before he went in, he would be at home with his wife and kids.

He says he’s going to have to live with that the rest of his life. He asks Carter is that’s what he wanted to hear. Carter starts to ask another question but Jessica shuts him down and says Ryan can go. He goes. Carter asks if she buys it and Jessica says yes. Carter says even a bad cop is good 95% of the time. She tells him if he has no further proof, the investigation is closed.

At the hospital, they tell Vee the only blood on the needle was hers but they don’t know what else might have been on it. They tell her she needs to start on proactive meds in case she was exposed to something because they may not know for six months. She pockets the needle and tells Tae she’s ready to go back to work.

Hayes gave up the location of the other shooters to Tae and Vee and the gang unit puts on their vests as Sam tells them that at least one has a history of beating cops to death and says to be careful. He puts Ryan on point as they head to the first of three houses where the shooters are holed up. They head to the first one. Ryan is out front and they have some heavy artillery SWAT looking guys along with them. The door starts to open and an old woman comes out.

Sam motions to her to be quiet and she flips him off then calls out repeatedly “one time” and that’s the signal to all around that there are cops in the area. Sam calls out that they have been compromised and they all go on high alert. Shots are fired at them and someone throws down a planter at Ryan. Cassius tells him – welcome to the neighborhood.

They work their way down beside the house. There’s another shot fired and Sam calls for a sit rep from the teams. Vee and Tae breach the apartment house and she heads in. A shooter from upstairs scatters sloppy shots at them. She returns fire and they haead up. A guy comes out at Vee and she knocks him down the stairs.

A guy throws down a Molotov cocktail and Cassius chases him down. Ryan runs through a house chasing another guy who does some crazy Parkour stuff and jumps down a series of roofs but then Ryan is on him and knocks him down and cuffs him. Two guys take shots at Sam and the others and he goes after one who backtracks when a police car pulls up. He kicks out a screen and Sam catches him half out the window. The guy jumps. Sam says he must have preferred to fly then go back in and Vee says he’s a third striker.

Sam says that with the shooters locked up, maybe they can get Javier to back down. Ryan asks to let him try – he says since his son shot his partner, he owes him one. Ryan comes to the chapel at the hospital and tells Javier that one shooter is dead and the other three are in custody. He says it’s over but Javier says it’s not over until he gets Levar’s son.

Marciela comes in and says she wants the men who shot up her son to die. She says she wants their mothers to grieve. She says she knows that it won’t help Carlos and will put Ryan, Daniel and the girls at risk. She says she wants to know she will never have to go through this with any of them again. She tells Javier to promise him that he will not retaliate. Javier gives her his word and takes her in his arms. Ryan is relieved.

He’s out later with Cassius and tells him that Javier agreed to back off. Cassius says they need some time off and says he has a hot date he needs to see. Ryan asks what his name is and Cassius laughs. Cassius tells him they went through J-Dubs phone and says the call came from near there. He stops the car and says they need witnesses. Ryan says it’s a waste of time but then Cassius spots a surveillance camera.

They head into the shop and Cassius asks to see the footage. The guy says unless he has a warrant, he doesn’t have to show him something. The shop keeper says the police always want his hard drive whenever he’s robbed and it costs $200 to replace. He says it’s cheaper to get robbed. Cassius says he’s going to call in the warrant and leaves.

Ryan asks the guy in Spanish about what he’s hiding. He says he may be taking cash back on EBT cards or something shady with other stuff. He says to let him see the footage and if there’s nothing there they need, he can clear it off and they won’t come back, The guy gives him access. He scrolls through and then Cassius comes up and asks how he got him to cooperate. He says he hablos espanol. They see one car that Cassius calls an esse Ferrari. He says the footage is so grainy, it could even be Ryan since all Mexicans own the same car. They agree it’s a dead end. Whew.
[10:00:08 PM] Rachel Rowan: J-Dub is mad and says the cops are tripping. Jessica says he’s having second thoughts and he says he’s not going anywhere without Marlon. He says he’s his heart and can’t leave him. She says it’s spouse or immediate family only and Ryan suggests getting a judge so they can paper them up and make their love official. Jessica says she’ll see what she can do and heads off to work on getting his soon-to-be-hubby on the witness relocation program with him.

Vee heads back to the crack house and Tae startles her. She asks why he’s there and he says he’s there to make sure she doesn’t get killed. She says she’s not there to make an arrest. She got a hit off the prints on the needle that stuck her – a guy named Clay. She knocks on his door and holds out the needle. He resists and she and Tae have to beat him down. She tells him to shut up and says if he sticks her, she gets to stick him. She draws a vial of his blood and says if she finds out he killed her, she’ll be back for revenge.

The shooters are allowed out into the yard at the jail. They are immediately jumped by all the Latino prisoners and the Latino guard tells them through the door that Javier sends his regards. Javier and Marcelia are at the hospital with Carlos – he starts to wake up and she tells Javier that God rewarded them because he didn’t kill anyone.

Vee gets the call. The blood work came back positive for HIV. She tells Vee if she hasn’t started the cocktail, she needs to ASAP and says it doesn’t mean she’ll get HIV. Tae comes over and she lies and says she’s clean. He says he knew there was nothing to worry about.

Cassius performs J-Dub and Marlon’s wedding ceremony and pronounces them husband and husband. The Marshals take them away and Sam asks how the hell they’ll be able to hide those two. Ryan thanks Jessica and says it must be a relief for J-Dub not having to live a lie anymore. She apologizes to Ryan about losing Tanner and about Carter. He tells her that Carter isn’t wrong about her dad.

Ryan says he doesn’t know what happened between her and her dad, but that he trusts her. She says she used to as well. She leaves him her card and says to call if they need to talk. Back at the office, Carter shows Jessica footage from a police dash cam that was near where Tanner was shot. There were 58 seconds between when Tanner was shot and when Ryan was. He says they need to know what happened in that 58 seconds and she asks him to play it again.

Carlos talks to his parents as the doc comes in and says that some of the bullets are still in him and can’t be removed without the risk of permanent paralysis. The doc checks his feet for sensation. He doesn’t feel what the doctor is doing. He says he doesn’t feel anything and asks why he can’t feel his legs. The doctor says there has likely been substantial damage to the spinal cord but it’s too early to tell if it’s permanent. He says with his injuries, it’s highly unlikely he won’t regain the use of his lower body.

The doctor says he’ll come back in the morning to talk about options and tells Javier they did all they could. Carlos gets mad and says he wants to be alone. His mom starts talking about getting him the best care but he begs her just to leave and he starts crying. Marciela goes. Javier rubs Carlos’ head and kisses him. He says they’re going to get through this and Carlos says okay. His dad leaves and he starts really crying.

Outside in the hall, Javier looks back in at his son hitting his legs and ripping out his IV’s and shouting move and sobbing loudly. His parents can both hear him scream and cry in frustration. Javier tells his wife that he’s sorry and says he has to go. She asks where he’s going but he doesn’t slow up. He calls his guy and tells him to find Levar’s son. He asks what the plan is and Javier says sangre por sangre (blood for blood).

The End!
