Hannibal RECAP 3/28/14: Season 2 Episode 5 “Mukozuke”

Hannibal RECAP 3/28/14: Season 2 Episode 5 “Mukozuke”

NBC’s hit show HANNIBAL returns tonight with a new episode. In “Mukozuke,” Will makes claims about the Ripper’s true identity. Dr. Able Gideon (Eddie Izzard) arrives to confirm Will’s suspicions, leading to a plan to put an end to the Ripper once and for all. Elsewhere, Will enlists Freddie’s help to contact his lethal admirer, and Alana becomes suspicious of Will’s intentions.

On last week’s episode the team was called in when a body was found in a meadow, the cranial cavity converted into a beehive. Meanwhile, Beverly Katz (Hattienne Park) continued to work on the mural killer case, secretly consulting with Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) to decipher the killer’s human tapestry. Will insisted that the killer was put in the mural by Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen), and urged her to prove that Hannibal was the real Chesapeake Ripper and Copycat Killer. Did you watch last week’s episode?  We did and we recapped it right here for you.

On tonight’s episode When one of the team’s own is found in a grotesque tableau, Will (Hugh Dancy) volunteers to assist with the profile and informs Jack (Laurence Fishburne) that it’s the work of the Chesapeake Ripper and the Copycat Killer… the two are one and the same. Dr. Able Gideon (Eddie Izzard) is brought back to the asylum to help confirm Will’s claims of the Ripper’s true identity (Hannibal Lecter), but instead suggests to Will the idea of putting an end to the Ripper once and for all. Confined behind bars, Will enlists the help of Freddie Lounds (Lara Jean Chorostecki (Lara Jean Chorostecki) to contact his murderous admirer through her website. Once he has the killer’s attention, Will asks for help dealing with Hannibal (Mads Mikkelsen). Alana (Caroline Dhavernas) becomes suspicious of Will’s intentions after reading Freddie’s article, and Gideon confirms her suspicions, sending Alana and Jack rushing to find Hannibal before it’s too late. Also starring Aaron Abrams and Scott Thompson.

Hannibal cooks. He makes scrambled eggs for a gourmet breakfast. Will however gets a tray of slop. Hannibal sits to a lovely breakfast with Jack who looks out the window in despair over his wife. He tells him he needs to eat and Jack reluctantly sits. He’s upset at his wife’s suicide attempt. Hannibal says she thinks she has a right to die. Jack tells him he’s grateful that he saved her. Hannibal says as a doctor he couldn’t let her do it and he couldn’t do it to Jack. He tells Hannibal he’s a great friend.

Freddie comes to the observatory and pulls a gun as she creeps up the stairs. She sees a large empty main room and some plastic partitions and some blood. She snaps some photos. Jack arrives at the scene and meets her there. She rushes over to him and tells him to send someone else in because it’s one of his people. Jack walks past her and goes in. He pauses at the door, then enters.

Jack sees that Beverly has been vivisected into several slices and placed within plastic barriers. Blood drips down. It’s absolutely horrifying. Jack breaks down into tears. There are at least six slices of her – aaagh! Jack tells Jimmy and Zeller about the call from Freddie and Beverly’s murder. He says she’ll be honored at FBI headquarters for her sacrifice.

Alana and Jack come to tell Will about what happened to Beverly. He is stunned. He sees Beverly standing in the corner of the room (he’s hallucinating) and then she’s gone. He tells them he wants to see her. They strap him into a strait jacket and load him onto a handtruck that he’s bound to. They also put a mask on him and then haul him to the death scene. Freddie snaps photos of him being unloaded.

They wheel Will into the scene. He looks at the horror as Jack tells everyone to leave he and Will alone. Jack unstraps Will from the device and restraints. He pulls him off the cart and holds his gun out while he unstraps him, leaving the face mask for last. Will walks towards the vivisected display and examines it. Jack leaves him to it. Will closes his eyes and shudders as he tries to picture what happened. Beverly is there reminding him to interpret the evidence. He opens his eyes and looks. He goes into his fugue state he works in and pictures the slices of Beverly coming back together into one whole. He sees her before him and touches her.

Will walks around her and then grabs her and strangles her. He looks into her eyes as he does it and says she knows the killer and the killer knows her. He expertly renders her unconscious. He says he freezes her body so he can cleanly dismantle her. He lays the frozen body on a table and slices her with a saw. He says she cuts like stone and then pulls her apart layer by layer like scenes at a crime scene. This is my design. He says he’ll leave no usable evidence but she found something – she found the killer. He asks what he took from her. He stares at her and closes his eyes and focuses. He stares at the floor as Jack comes back in and says it’s the Chesapeake River.

Will tells him it’s the same killer – the Ripper and the Copycat. He says Beverly helped him see it. Jack tells him to help him see it. Will says he was looking for a connection between the Ripper and the Copycat and obviously found something. He asks Jack where he was last night and he says he was at the hospital. Will says he told Beverly to go to him and tell him what she knew but says she went looking for evidence and met the Ripper. He says she’ll be missing organs taken as trophies. Jack asks who it is and Will tells him that Beverly made the connection to the Ripper and that Jack has to make his own. Jack asks why he brought Will there and he says so she could say good-bye.

Chilton asks Will if he’s like to talk about what happened at the Observatory and Will chides him for discussing his therapy session with Hannibal counter to their agreement. Chilton says he only gave him a peek. Chilton asks about Beverly’s visit and what they discussed. Will says he probably listened in but Chilton assures him he didn’t. Will says they talked about the Ripper and then she went to find him. Chilton says he knows something about this killer. He says he is intelligent with surgical experience. Will reminds him that he thought Abel Gideon was the Ripper and they agree that Gideon likely knows who the Ripper is. Chilton asks if Will knows who it is and Will says it would be interesting if they both thought it was the same man. He says it would be interesting if he could talk to Gideon about it and that Chilton could be the one to catch him.

Jimmy and Zeller look at Beverly’s body and Jack says they don’t need to work the case – he says they can just grieve but they refuse and say that Beverly would have worked the case. Jack is pleased. Zeller tells him that all the parts aren’t Beverly’s. The kidneys belong to Gray – the mural killer. Whoever killed him also killed Beverly. Zeller says if they find her kidneys, they find her killer. Too bad Hannibal is putting them through a meat grinder and cooking them up. He smiles as he eats.

Will is brought to one of the talking cages and Gideon is in the one next to him. Gideon asks if he really ate Abigail Hobbes. Gideon asks if this is Chilton’s sick idea of group therapy. Will says he wants to talk to him about the Chesapeake Ripper and Gideon says that’s who he thought he was. Will says he’s only the pretender to that throne. Gideon asks how he got Chilton to bring him back since he’s scared of him.

Will tells him he knows who the Ripper is because he’s met him. Gideon asks what Will gets out of this and Will tells him he remembers the night at Hannibal’s and tells him that Hannibal sent him to kill him. Gideon says he’s in trouble if he thinks he’s the evidence and Will asks why he’s protecting him. Gideon says he’s the devil and is smoke and the Ripper can’t be caught. He says Will will have to kill him and Will says that’s fair enough.

#Hannibal meets with Chilton and discusses their unorthodox approaches. He asks why Chilton brought Gideon back to the hospital. Chilton insists it wasn’t for selfish motives. Hannibal reminds him that Gideon disemboweled him. Chilton says they have to hide both their misdeeds and Hannibal reminds him that either exposing the other would be a lose-lose and they toast to that. Chilton tells him he brought Gideon back to participate in Will’s therapy. He says Will shot him but has not memory of it. Chilton says he’s trying to rebuild Will’s broken brain. Hannibal asks to analyze his patient since Chilton is analyzing his and asks to meet with Gideon.

Hannibal comes to the hospital and Gideon waits in a cage. Gideon invites him to come closer. Hannibal greets him and Gideon says he is a master of reading faces but he’s never seen his before. Hannibal introduces himself and says he’s Will’s psychiatrist and Gideon tells him that’s not much of an advertisement of his abilities and Hannibal says that remains to be seen. Chilton listens in on this chat. Gideon says he understands why Chilton envies Hannibal and wants to be him. Gideon says Will has a bone to pick with Hannibal. Hannibal says he wants him to help Will.

Freddie shoots photos of Hannibal leaving the hospital. He tells her it’s rude and she says she has no feelings of shame. He tells her she should seek therapy. He asks why she’s there at the hospital and she says she is there at Will’s request to interview him. She tells him to imagine that and he says he will. The orderly escorts Freddie in and tells her not to pass anything to Will but soft paper – no pens, no paper, no taking anything from Will and no touching.

Freddie tells Will it’s good to see him in custody where he belongs. She asks why he’s there and he tells her he has an admirer that she’ll be interested in. She says she’s interested in murderers and those obsessed with them and he tells her it’s about the man who killed the bailiff and judge in his trial. Freddie asks if the man is his admirer. She says he killed the bailiff to give him an alibi and then the judge because he threw out the alibi. She asks if the guy is crazy and he says he understands him. Freddie asks if he’s trying to catch or contact the man and he says he wants to establish a line of communication and her site would be good for that. She says she could do it in exchange for exclusive rights to his story. He tells her it’s all hers. She says they need to send an invitation to the killer. She pulls out a recorder.

Hannibal listens to her recording on her website. She says that other killers have been inspired by Will and one killer even constructed an ode to his killing techniques. She says Will believes the man wants to help and killed people in his name and says Will wants to ask him why. An orderly offers Will a book but he declines. Then he tells him that people don’t understand much about either of them. He says they understand each other and that they are missing something or have evolved not to need it. He says Will was hiding in the FBI and that’s talented. He says if Will hadn’t fallen sick they wouldn’t have caught him.

Will says he picked a good place to hide and the guy says that spending time in a mental hospital is easy. He says that maniacs can fit in easily and they would never know that he had once been a patient. Will reminds him that Chilton listens to everything and the guy says he was the one who wired the room and also who turned it off before coming to him. Will asks about him killing the bailiff  and he says he thought it would get Will off. He says he read Will’s file so he know what to do but says it was a bitch to get the bailiff up on the stag’s head.

Will asks about the judge but the orderly says that was someone else. He pulls out his keys and unlocks the padlock holding Will in and opens the door. Will steps out of the cage. The orderly lets him walk out and shuts the door to the cage. He asks why he’s helping him. He tells Will they are hawks and Will says hawks are solitary. The orderly says imagine if the hawks started walking together.

He chains Will’s hands and takes him back to his cell. He asks why Will wanted to talk to him and Will tells him he needs a favor and the orderly says he’s happy to do a favor for a friend. He tells him to say the word. Will looks at the orderly and says he wants him to kill Hannibal Lecter. The guy gives a little nod and walks away. Gideon is nearby – looks like he may have overheard.

Will sits in his cell. He cracks his neck and stares around. He feels something on his back and unzips his jumpsuit. He pulls off his shirt and panics as horns begin to burst out of his back. Soon he has a full set of antlers. He snaps out of it as Alana calls his name. She’s there to ask him why he gave an interview to Freddie Lounds when he despises her. He asks if she’s suspicious and she says she’s worried. He tells her not to worry about him and she says she knows he wants to do something about Beverly. She tells him there is no solution for grief and he tells her Beverly died because she listened to him and he won’t let that happen again. She asks what he’s done and he says what he had to do.

Alana walks out and sees the security cameras and notices Gideon is there. Chilton asks what she’s doing there. He says she is catnip for killers and asks why they all talk to her. She asks why Gideon is there and asks if Will has been different since Gideon has been back. He tells her Gideon is there as part of Will’s therapy to help him reclaim his past. Alana asks if she can see Gideon. He allows it. She tells him she’s happy to see that he’s still alive and he says that Will didn’t do a good enough job of killing him. She asks how he knows where she lived the night he came to kill her.

He tells her that someone had coordinated that night and that both she and he are expendable. She tells him she knows he was looking for the Chesapeake Ripper and he says he found Will. She tells him Will is not the Ripper. Gideon says not yet. He tells her that there are things that make us who we are and asks what can change that. He tells her that Will has changed and wants revenge. She asks if Will knows who killed Beverly. Gideon tells her he will give her the gift to save Will from himself. Gideon says that Will is in a biblical place and out for revenge. She says he’s locked up and can’t hurt anyone. He tells her that he can whisper in someone’s ear and have someone hurt. Alana asks who Will wants killed.

Hannibal swims laps in a pool. The orderly is there in his swim gear and dives in to also swim laps. The swim in lanes side by side. The orderly shoots Hannibal with a dart. He tries to get it out but can’t and sinks below the surface of the pool. At Hannibal’s, Alana and Jack search for him but he’s not there and there’s nothing on his calendar. He asks Alana what she thinks Will has done. Jack gets a call that says they have a trace on Hannibal’s phone. They head out.

Will sits in his cell with visions of dripping blood in his head. He imagines blood dripping down a drain. Hannibal balances on a bucket, arms taped to a pole and a rope around his neck. The orderly tells him this situation is exactly where the phrase kick the bucket came from. He tells Hannibal he can kick it and get it over with or wait to bleed out. Hannibal tells him that Will is not who he thinks he is – he says Will is not a murderer and the guy tells him that he is now by proxy.

Hannibal asks if Will asked him to do this and he says that’s what friends are for. He tells Hannibal he has some questions and Hannibal agrees. He asks if he killed the judge. Hannibal doesn’t answer so the orderly comes closer and tells him he will ask yes or no questions and he can tell by his pupil dilation if the answer is yes or no. He says if you dilate it’s a yes. He asks Hannibal if he’s the Chesapeake Ripper.  His eyes dilate widely. The guy smiles. He asks how many times he’s seen someone hanging onto a life not worth living. Hannibal tells him he knows his life is precious.

Jack and Alana come to the pool facility and race in guns drawn. They open doors and head down to the basement.

The orderly asks what he thinks they’ll call him. He says the Iroquois used to eat their enemies to gain their strength and says maybe he’ll become the Ripper and Hannibal says only if you eat me. Hannibal sees Jack coming. He calls out to him and Jack shoots the guy. In his last moments, the orderly kicks the bucket out from under Hannibal’s feet. Jack rushes to grab his legs to keep him from choking as Alana comes in. He shouts at her to call an ambulance. Will sits in his cell and sees blood overflow his sink and onto the floor. His eyes look dead.
