It’s been months since Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev broke up, but just like their characters on The Vampire Diaries, the two have slowly drifted apart. In fact, it’s not a coincidence that real life mirrored the television show this year, and sources tell us that it was by Nina’s request that ‘Delena’ was no longer the focal point of the show. After all, Ian and Nina met and fell in love while playing out their on-screen romance. Elena and Damon quickly became fan favorites, and fans started obsessing over their favorite on-screen couple that had quickly fallen into an off-screen relationship. Unfortunately, that off-screen relationship had a pretty dramatic end earlier last year, which has quickly led to some awkward on-set tension.
Here they were – two former exes that had broken up on not-so-great terms, and they were being forced to do love scenes together. You can see how it would get old really quickly, and it was reportedly by Nina’s and Ian’s request that Delena fell apart on the show. Sure, ‘Delena’ still looks like it’s the show’s endgame, but you think Damon’s ‘death’ this year was just a coincidence? And do you think it’s also a coincidence that Damon will spend a large part of Season 6 away from Elena?
No, it was likely contrived that way by the writers, as to keep the tension between actors minimal. This way, Nina and Ian can avoid each other on set without creating any ruckus, and they won’t have to force feelings for each other that are no longer there. Better for Nina, better for Ian, and better for Ian’s new girlfriend, Nikki Reed. Plus, if the rumors are true and this is the last season, then at least they’ll go out with a bang – and finally get a good, clean slate so they can move on.
