One may wonder why Kristen Stewart has been so significantly off-the-radar for the past year, neither promoting nor shooting any films. The simple explanation is, of course, that she’s had no films to promote or shoot, but the real question is why an actress of her fame would be spending an entire film without anything to do. Is it because she wasn’t offered any roles? Was the backlash from her cheating scandal still going strong? Were studios averse to casting her? Was she herself intent on taking a break?
According to Kristen, who’s currently promoting Camp X-Ray in Sundance, it was a combination of everything. She admits to MTV, “I had sort of been considering taking time off for a long time, but this was not planned. I’m a total workaholic, and if there’s something out there that feels worth it, then I will work through Christmas. It doesn’t matter. It was simply because I didn’t find anything that I really dug.”
Well, I doubt she thought Twilight was worth it, but money’s money and a contract is a contract, amirite? Regardless, I’m sure Kristen realized that she needed to disappear from the public eye for a while, considering how vocal the backlash was getting. While her ex-boyfriend started landing role after role, Kristen managed to stay away from making any headlines, whether personal or professional.
And now, after taking enough time off, she’s started landing more films, meaning her break was actually a smart idea. Even if she wasn’t offered anything worth her while over the last year, it looks like financiers are no longer looking at her as a risk, meaning she can go back to making her little-seen indie films that she excelled at before Twilight came along.
