Nashville RECAP 5/7/14: Season 2 Episode 21 “All or Nothing With Me”

NASHVILLE continues on ABC tonight with a whole new episode. Tonight’s episode is called, “All or Nothing With Me.” Rayna hosts a charity concert at a military base after she learns Luke was injured in Afghanistan. Meanwhile, Deacon and Maddie grow closer; Teddy thinks he’s losing his family; and Jeff upsets Juliette by threatening to tell Avery the truth.

On last week’s episode Scarlett’s breakdown was driving everyone to point fingers at who might be responsible for her condition. Deacon was blaming Rayna for pushing her too fast, Rayna was blaming Juliette and for forcing her on stage and Beverly thought Rayna is only interested in seeing her label succeed. It always feels like everyone had an axe to grind with Juliette so she turned to Avery, only to find him preoccupied with Scarlett. During her moment of weakness, she was driven right into the hands of her nemesis. On tonight’s episode Rayna organizes a charity concert at Fort Campbell after finding out Luke has been injured in Afghanistan, forcing him to cut his tour short. Deacon and Maddie are brought closer together as they chart a new course for their future. Teddy is beginning to feel like his family is slipping further and further away from him. Juliette is racked with guilt knowing that her back is against the wall after Jeff threatens to go to Avery with the truth. Gunnar is feeling pressure to reveal a secret about Juliette to Avery until Zoey urges him that his professional and private life should be kept separate. And Will and Layla begin shooting their new reality series.

Juliette is in the shower scrubbing and crying. She’s sobbing and sobbing. Rayna takes a big meeting with some radio folks about Highway 65. They ask about Luke on the morale tour for the troops. They tell her they love her work but her listeners aren’t happy with her signing Juliette. Rayna says she signed her because she’s talented and loves country music. She says Don’t Put Dirt on My Grave is a great song. Bucky comes in and tells her that Luke’s convoy was hit by an IED and is injured. He’s in a hospital in Germany but is coming to New York. Rayna says she wants to be there to meet his flight.

Deacon brings Scarlett some tea and she says she’s reading, not writing. She says she doesn’t know what to do with herself and he advises her to pick up where she left off. The reality crew is installing cameras and they ask Gunnar to sign a release. He refuses. He says he doesn’t care for reality shows. Zoe comes in grouchy because his phone woke her up and she worked late last night.

He tells her that Juliette wants to meet with him to discuss writing. He pulls Zoe aside and tells her that he saw she and Jeff hook up and he doesn’t know how to tell Avery and isn’t sure he wants to work with her. Zoe says she doesn’t know if she would want to know in his position.

Rayna packs her stuff to go meet Luke. Maddie asks to spend the night with Deacon. She asks why not and Teddy says they’re staying with him. Maddie says she needs more than an hour a week with him. Maddie says she loves Teddy but wants some more time with Deacon. She asks again and Teddy relents. Rayna asks Teddy if he’s okay with it and he says as much as he can be. Rayna says she’ll drop her off.

Juliette finds Avery there and he says he was there pretty late waiting on her and she says the event took forever to get out of. Avery tells her knows things have been off and apologizes. He says he was trying to help Scarlett and didn’t stop and think how it would look to her. She thanks him and he tells her that Scarlett is his ex but he’s in love with her. He kisses her and wants to get romantic but she says she has meetings. He asks if she’s mad but she says no and that they’re fine. She leaves.

Rayna is at the hospital and they tell her she can go on in. She sees Luke getting checked and he says he’s fine. He says the first humvee hit the IED not him and two of them died and others were injured. He says he has bruised ribs and a concussion. She says he shouldn’t go back and he says he is, but isn’t sure when. He tells her it shook him up in ways he didn’t expect. He asks her for a kiss and she gives it.
Luke tells her he’s glad she’s there.

They get ready to start filming at Will and Layla’s. He says he has a brand new song for his brand new wife. He plays a song for Layla. It’s all about the mistakes he’s made in his life until he met her. She watches entranced. The producer says she knew they would be a goldmine.

Avery tells Zoe that J has been distant since Scarlett’s breakdown and she asks if he’s sure it’s about his ex. She advises him to talk to Gunnar. Scarlett shows up and asks if she can crash with Zoe who agrees. Avery says it looks like she wants to waitress. She looks down and sees she had picked up a dish off the table.

J and Glenn are meeting with songwriters and she seems tired. It’s time for Gunnar. She says she knows who she is but they’ve never met. He says he was in a band with her boyfriend. He says he’s happy to work however she wants. Jeff comes in and says she and Gunnar are a good combo. J asks for a moment alone with Jeff and Gunnar and Glenn step out.

Deacon asks Maddie what she’s studying and she says Algebra II – he asks if it’s a sequel. He says he never took it and says he wished he had parents that made him study. She asks about his childhood and he says he didn’t have much of one. She asks if he ever thought about marrying Rayna but then he’s distracted because he burned the lasagne.

Rayna and Luke watch the news about the incident. He says he’s sorry he can’t make the show because it was going to be simulcast all over the world. She tells him to go do the show at Fort Campbell where there’s 30,000 troops. He says he can’t do the whole show himself and she says she can help. He asks about her album launch and she says she can do both and others will help out.

Jeff says he’s been thinking about Juliette and then says not that way. She says she was drunk when it happened. He tries to lure her back to Edgehill and says that Rayna doesn’t have the resources to help her. Glenn comes in and tells J that Rayna wants her to perform at Fort Campbell with Kellie Pickler, Rayna and Luke and she agrees. Jeff says he won’t give up on getting her back and she says that won’t ever happen again. He says he meant to the label, not about the sex, but tells her that was fun too.

Deacon eats breakfast when Maddie comes in. He tells her Rayna called and said Luke is fine. He tells her about the show at Fort Campbell. She found a Merle Haggard flier and asks if he knows it. He says he did and she says it’s cool. He says it’s cool that she knows it’s cool. She asks if she can spend the night again and he says if it’s okay with her parents, she can stay as long as she wants.

She says she wishes she had grown up with him and he says he wasn’t who her mom deserved back then. She asks where he was when she was born and he says on the road.

Rayna and Luke greet some troops and their families. Luke is worried about Juliette performing and says he doesn’t think she deserves to be part of it. J is there and says if he doesn’t want her on his stage she won’t be. She stomps off.

Will carries Layla over the threshold and they kiss. The producer tells them it looks canned and tells them to do it again because the kiss looks flat. Will is annoyed and says it’s been 10 takes. He says he can’t do this today.

Luke asks Rayna why she wants J there and he asks if her organizing this benefit is for him, the military or the label. She says she cares about these people and cares about him. She thinks J would be a great addition to the line up but it’s his show and it’s up to him. A military rep asks about the line up and Rayna says Luke is handling it.

J’s assistant asks her if they’re leaving. She says that she’s there to support the troops even if she can’t sing. She goes to talk to some soldiers and tells a guy that her dad was a Black Hawk pilot that died in a training accident when she was four. She tells him she appreciates his service and sacrifice. Luke overhears this and looks interested.

Deacon is at an AA meeting and talks about and says he’s used to being called a drunk, loser or defendant but now he’s adjusting to being called dad. He says his daughter asked where he was when she was born. He says he told her he was on the road, but he was really on the road to hell. He says when he found out the woman he loved was pregnant with someone else’s baby, he fell off the wagon. He says he doesn’t even know where he was when she was born – he says probably in a flea bag motel with a woman whose name he will never remember.

Will is at the gym working out when a trainer approaches him and corrects a movement. Tony introduces himself and says he needs to get his form right or he’s going to hurt himself. Tony flirts then gives him his card. Will crumples it and shoves it in his pocket.

Luke rolls up on J and tells her not to leave. He says he was a stubborn cuss and wants her to perform. She asks if Rayna made him and he says no – he says he made some wrong assumptions about her and would like her to perform. He even asks her to duet with him.

Gunnar comes to see Avery and brings beer and has dude advice. Avery says it’s like she’s putting a wall up. Gunnar says he saw her at the DMI party. There’s a knock and Zoe comes in and says she’s J’s new back up singer. Avery hugs and congratulates her and so does Gunnar. She says she wants to celebrate with Gunnar right now. She hauls him out but Avery stops Gunnar and asks what he was about to say and he says she just looked lost without him. Zoe says she and Gunnar are both going to be working with Juliette and it will be difficult.

Scarlett works a shift at the Blue Bird and is recognized but she takes an order and they tell her she was really good and it’s a shame. They place their order and she goes to put it in.

Luke comes to Rayna’s and she asks how he is. He says he’s been worse. He sits and she asks about Juliette and he says he can admit he was an ass. Rayna says she may do a song with the girls and it would be nice for the families. He says the folks on the base would love it. Rayna asks where the tension between them is coming from. She says he’s pushing her away.

Luke says that he knows he’s been a jerk. He says when the IED went off, he thought he was going to die. He says he saw his kids in his mind and he saw her. He tells her he loves her and that if he’s edgy it’s because he’s not sure she feels the same way about him. She sits closer and tells him she loves him and is all in. They kiss.

Rayna and Luke welcome the families and tell them they are all fans of theirs. Rayna says Michelle Obama has some words for them and they point to a screen where the first lady offers words of encouragement to them. Deacon and Maddie are there and Teddy and Daphne are together. Daphne asks if this is how it will always be – her with him and Maddie with Deacon. Teddy comforts her.

Will and Layla talk and she tells him the show will be good for them. She asks what’s wrong and tries to kiss him. He looks at the cameras and says the bug him. He freaks out then starts to tear the cameras down. She begs him to stop.

The CO of the 101st Airborne thanks Luke and the others. Juliette tells Rayna to hang onto Luke because he’s a good guy and there are few of them in the world. He calls J to the stage and says she understands loss and supports them. Luke starts out with Dirt on My Grave and J joins in. Avery watches smiling. They sing very well together. The crows sings along. Rayna also watches with a smile.

Deacon comes to stand beside Rayna and she thanks him for watching Maddie. He says Maddie has been asking a lot of questions. He says he’d like to talk with her about some stuff that those questions generated. He tells her that she did nothing wrong by hiding Maddie’s paternity from him. He says he knows she was trying to protect Maddie and he gets that now. She thanks him.

J gets up close and personal with the GIs, shaking hands and smiling at them while singing. Luke joins her down there. She wraps up the final line of the song and the crowd goes wild. J comes to greet Avery and he says he didn’t want to miss it. He tells her she was amazing. She says she’s proud of what they just did and calls it their song.

Avery tells her again that he’s sorry and doesn’t want to lose her. She tells him that won’t happen and kisses and hugs him.

Zoe comes in and asks Scarlett if she’s working tonight. She says she gave up the shift. Then Zoe tells her she’s going on tour with J to sing back up. Scarlett says with Zoe leaving town, it makes it easier for her to leave too and get a fresh start.

Will splashes water on his face and Layla knocks on the bathroom door in tears asking him if he’s all right. He pulls out the Tony’s crumpled card and leaves him a message to schedule a private session.

Rayna introduces Kellie Pickler. Luke hugs Rayna while they watch her sing. Deacon approaches Teddy and asks if he’s seen Maddie. He says she’s with Daphne. Deacon asks him to tell him about the night that Maddie was born. He tells Teddy he’s done a great job raising her and he wants to know what he missed. Teddy says Rayna was in labor at home and then they rushed right into the delivery room. He says she was born right before sunrise and came out crying. Teddy says they swaddled her and gave her to him. He says when he held her it was a love like he had never known.

Jeff is there and J asks why he’s there and he says he’s there for Luke since he’s an Edgehill artist. He’s still trying to get her to come back to the label. He asks her if she thinks Avery would forgive her if he found out about them. I think he’s trying to blackmail her to come back to his label.

Rayna takes the stage and because there are so many families there she decided for the first time ever to bring her daughters onto the stage with her. She says they’ll do A Life That’s Good. Maddie asks if Deacon can come sing with them. Rayna says that the song writer is there too and she asks if Deacon can come on out. Maddie and Daphne wave him on and he goes up. Teddy and Luke are both pissed now.

Maddie and Luke play guitar, Daphne has a tambourine and they all sing together. Rayna starts, then the girls join in. Luke is pulling faces. Teddy is glaring. The crowd is thrilled. Rayna and Deacon smile at each other as they sing.
