Tonight on Project Runway: Under the Gunn, the designed enjoy a beach party in the California sun and then are challenged to use the materials from the seaside bash to create their looks.

The female designers are talking about how bad they felt for Nicholas. They didn’t believe Anya handled the situation well when she called Nicholas out on his portfolio. Tim is very impressed at how Anya handled the situation.

The Challenge Begins

Beach-inspired looks are the theme for the night. The designers begin on a sunny beach in California. All of the materials and props they see are fair game for them to take for the challenge. The mentors watch as the designers grab everything from beach chairs, to umbrellas, to leis.

Tim tells the designers that they have until 11PM to work the first night. Tim tells the designers he’ll be back with the mentors to see their progress.

Stephanie took several leis. Natalia is doing something with a grass skirt. Shortly after the designers get a start in their designs, the mentors are back with Tim to check on their progress. Mondo tells Asha that he wants her design to really stand out. He wants to take more risks this time since his team has been safe the last two competitions. Mondo believes Asha has grown a lot and he is happy with her design. Next he meets with Michelle is taking a risk which is pretty true to form for her, but she almost always pulls it off well. She has some stand out colors she is using. Last is Sam. Sam had lots of items he pulled from the beach, but was designing his whole outfit using a bamboo style beach mat. It was very boxy and boring. Sam took Mondo’s comments personally, but Tim agreed with Mondo and they encouraged him to add some color to his bland look and to add more materials.

Asha is concerned about Blake using a grass skirt. She thinks Shan is on the right path. Nick visits with Natalia first. He is impressed with the knitting she did. Stephanie uses colorful leis and Nick really likes it. Next is Oscar. Tim and Nick are not happy at all with the two designs he came up with. Tim says it is not of designer quality. Oscar feels a bit lost after hearing they don’t like either idea. Blake helped out Oscar when he needed one more fan for his new design. 10:30 PM and the designers are still working and trying to finish up as much as possible.

Runway Day

Sam is upset when Mondo tells him that Tim thinks his skirt is sloppy. He gets hurt feelings again but agrees to work on it. Natalia has an intricate design, but it is not unique or of high quality. Michelle shares that Natalia does not know how to construct her designs. Anya sees all the time and effort put into her design but doesn’t think it shows in the design. Blake pays a nice compliment to Oscar and compares him to a magician. Nick feels that Natalia’s look is unfinished. He is worried about Stephanie as well.

Runway Time!!

Guest judge Georgina Chapman, co-founder of Marchesa, joins fellow judges Rachel Roy, and Jen Rade.

Nick feels that Oscar’s look should be on top. Stephanie’s design is colorful but looks really cheap. Blake had a unique look. Sam was able to pull off his look. Asha’s look is fabulous. So well-constructed! Michelle took a risk with the material and used a fun color.

The Judges Comments

Shan and Blake are safe.

Asha: lines are clean and modern. Sophisticated. Use of textile is wonderful. Very impressive.

Oscar: construction is impressive. Eloquent.

Natalia: love the weaving, but it lacks focus. Feels incomplete. Not sexy.

Michelle: very Austin powers meets judy jetson. Fabrication gives a cheap feel. Constructed well but looks to cocktail waitress-y.

Stephanie: disappointed to create a fabric, feels too project-y. like the color and skirt, but used same textile for entire design. Not sophisticated. Too crafty.

Sam: to be able to keep the pleats flat was incredible. Very impressed. Fun an nostalgic. Good balance, prefect length.

Elimination

Michelle and Stephanie are up for elimination. Stephanie has been eliminated. Nicholas hugs her goodbye.

The Winner!

The judges actually let Mondo decide the winner for the challenge. Asha and Sam were the top two. Mondo picked Sam to be the winner. He was really proud of him.

Next week Macklemore is a guest judge!
