A family watch as their home and farm are burned. Francis tells Mary he’s with the envoy from Venice all day. He tries to make small talk and she says she doesn’t want to try and pretend things are all right. She says she knows she asked for the truth but didn’t know he was going to be so harsh with her about her inability to produce an heir. She says she’ll come to terms with his disappointment.

Catherine chooses her clothes and orders a basket for her journey. She also asks for a warming brick for her feet. Mary comes in and Catherine says she’s off to a gathering at Beauvais. Mary asks to come along and Catherine says it’s a bore. She says the ride will take hours but Mary says she needs some fresh air. Catherine tries to put her off but Mary says two queens will address the nobles even more.

Lola is out in the hall when Kenna finds her and asks what’s wrong. She says her family found out about the baby and she’s now disowned and she’s trapped there. Kenna says this is why women like them need to hold onto every gift they get – land, treasure, anything. She says she was in a similar position with Henry and says she needs to build a nest egg so if Francis dies or is deposed, she can feel with her son.

Kenna tells her the problem is that women can’t legally own anything. Lola says she doesn’t want jewels from Francis but then realizes as a single woman, if she does get some land and property, it will be hers. Mary realizes the carriage is not going to Beauvais and starts to panic. Catherine says it’s somewhere else – the village of Noyon. She says it’s a village she’s adopted.

Mary asks why she provides for commoners but tells her to work on the nobles. Catherine says it’s a three legged stool. Catherine says she doesn’t care individually about peasants but as a group, she does because their reign depends on the 20 million commoners that provide for them. Mary says if Catherine ever needs to leave the country, the villagers would help her and Catherine says she would be wise to do the same.

The carriage is blocked by men in the road and Catherine tells her not to get out. They hear cries of kill the royals and the guards call them back. Catherine says they have to escape and opens a secret compartment that lets them slip out the bottom and into the woods while the guards fight the angry commoners. Mary tells her to take off all her jewelry and turn her cloak inside out to look more like commoners. They agree they need to head back to the castle ASAP.

Lola looks through some documents and she asks him about Lord Julien’s bank account and says she would like her dowry. He says the money is not hers, but then became Lord Julien’s and the money is now owed to Julien’s father. She says he and Julien were estranged. She asks if he’s already sent the money and he says he has to verify his address. Lola says her father told her bankers like to hold onto money as long as they can. He gets short with her and leaves.

Catherine sprains her ankle and they argue over whether it was a foxhole or badger hole. Mary spots a village and Catherine says that means dinner. Mary reminds her they don’t have any money and Catherine says she’s not a shop keeper and says money bags are for servants. They head into the inn and Catherine orders the best food and wine. The innkeeper asks her to show her money.

She doesn’t have any to show him. He says that he didn’t hear a carriage and knows they are unescorted. Mary concocts a lie that they are lady’s maid – a mother and daughter – that lost their jobs when the plague swept the family. Mary suggests they can work for a meal and a bed for the night and the innkeeper agrees and tells Mary to serve drinks. He tells Catherine she can milk the goat but she says her ankle is injured and her daughter can work enough for the both of them. Mary just smiles.

The Venetian envoy sucks up to Francis when Bash and Leith pull him aside. Francis announces to the group that Mary and Catherine’s carriage went missing and says all the guards and nobles need to search for them. He appoints Bash his temporary replacement and heads off. Catherine and Mary eat their hard earned dinner and are pleased to hear people in the inn toasting the queen and king.

Catherine says they need to buy a horse and Mary asks if she knows how much a horse is. They can’t show their jewels or they’ll be killed for them so they have to wait it out until Francis finds them. Narcisse approaches Lola and says he heard about the deal with her dowry. She asks how he knows and he says he’s the largest depositor at that bank and says they are all terrible gossips.

He says he could use his influence to get her money if she will have tea with him. She thanks him but says she’s not sure it’s a good idea. He says he wouldn’t press a lady but hopes she reconsiders. He leaves her there. Catherine finishes off her food and tells Mary they can entertain each other because they’re stuck. She asks why Mary wanted to go to Beauvais so ardently.

Mary says she wanted to see a sacred shrine she heard was there. Catherine says it’s the patron saint of bearded ladies. Mary says there is a physician noted for his work with women’s problems. Catherine says that means fertility problems and says she herself struggled with fertility for a while. Mary asks why she torments her then and Catherine says it was good fun.

Catherine tells her arguments and discord are what’s normal in a marriage. Catherine says she talks to her the way she does because she’s been down this road herself and says foolish romantic notions will not do her any favors. She tells Mary to give up on the dream of perfect intimacy and tells her to accept the distance and do her own work and have her own life.

The royal carriage is announced and they run to the door and see two imposters in their carriage pretending to be Francis and Mary. They are in fancy clothes and wearing jewels they likely found in the carriage. The two women are horrified at the charade. The fake king says the plague has taken a dread tool on the land and says the nation’s enemies are massing on their borders and asks for money for the troops.

Mary is shocked they believe him and Catherine says most don’t know what she and Francis look like. Catherine says it’s a masterful exploitation. Lola tells Kenna about the invitation to tea with Narcisse. Lola says Narcisse didn’t kill his wives and says he seems very believable. She says if things go bad she can just walk out. She also says he’s the butterfly man with the journal and Kenna is excited.

Lola says she’s not intrigued about him but Kenna doesn’t believe it. The villagers ask the fake Queen and King questions about Catherine’s insane tortures. Mary tells them there is a pond of donkey’s milk the women bathe in and one woman asks if passers by can see them. The fake Mary says the men have to turn their heads or the penalty is death.

One man says he’s brought his cart to court and has never seen such a thing. The crowd starts to turn ugly but Mary stands and says he must have gone near the North keep and says the pond of milk is by the South keep. Catherine asks why she saved her and Mary says the woman doesn’t deserve to die for being foolish and that she has a plan. The fake Queen gives her an appreciative nod.

Lola is amazed that tea with Narcisse really is tea outside in the sun by a lake. They are near an archery range and he offers to teach her how to shoot. He pushes up her sleeve and puts on a brace to protect her arm. He says mistakes in this game can hurt. She nocks an arrow and aims but he says she needs to go slower and really see her target and understand what she’s aiming for. He adjusts her and coaches her standing close by. She shoots and nails a bulls-eye and is pleased. He says the trick is to keep it going after a promising beginning. Now she is intrigued.

Francis finds a woman by the roadside – it was the woman whose farm burned at the start of the show. He says he’s the king of France looking for the royal carriage. She says that’s impossible because it was the King who burned her farm that morning because he said they didn’t pay enough. Louis tells him there is an imposter tormenting the villagers to stir up anti-monarchy sentiment.

The woman tells Francis he looks nothing like the king. The woman spits and says she curses Francis and Mary and says she hopes they are barren and their castle burns to the ground. Francis tells them to split up into smaller groups so they can cover more ground. He’s worried the imposter has his mother and wife.

The imposters announce they will retire to rest for a while before they continue their journey. Mary says the Duke of Amiens will see them safely home. Mary and Catherine go to talk to fake Mary. Mary says they’re lady’s maids and asks for a ride to Amiens. The woman says she always wanted to be a lady’s maid and Mary says she’s a queen.

The woman figures out they know she’s a fake and asks why Mary saved her. Mary says she didn’t want her hurt but the woman is skeptical. Catherine then tells her the two of them are also scam artists and says her daughter plays Mary Queen of Scot and she plays Catherine de Medici. The woman asks if they’re too short to pay queens and Catherine shows her a crown and says no one cares if you wear one of these.

The fake Mary says she’s never seen such glorious fake jewels and Mary says she can keep it if she gives them a ride to Amiens. Fake Francis is out burning another farm and fake Mary says she was an accomplished actress but says women can’t be on stage so she took a lover who set her up with this gig. Fake Francis comes in and demands to know what she’s told them. She tells him they’re like them.

He tells his fake guards to keep Catherine and Mary from leaving while he deals with his queen. They hear him slap her and the girl’s cry. At the castle, there is a dance going on and Narcisse finds Lola and asks her to dance with him. She asks what he wants and he says he wants to help with her dowry and tells her it’s a beautiful night for a bath.

He says there is a lovely room to bathe in and says it can’t be seen except for a parapet across the way. She asks if he’s suggesting that he’ll get her dowry if he can watch her bathe. He says he would never say that to a lady but says midnight is a lovely time for a soak. Some of the real guards show up to the inn and find her. Catherine says the carriage belongs to imposters who have her crown.

Mary tells them not to arrest the woman, but to bring the woman with them. The guards kick in the door and the man tells him that was the real Mary and Catherine. The man says neither he or Jenny told the queens anything. He says that’s good and runs the man through with a knife and then his guards kill the fake guards. All that’s left is the woman Jenny. The man quiets her and says it’s all right.

He tells her not a word and kisses her and says they may both get out of this alive. He tells his men they are going to bury the two queens. Jenny sits in the carriage with Mary and Catherine and Mary says they should have been on the main road by now. Jenny is crying and Mary commands her to tell her what’s going on. Gifford, the guard, is her lover, not the fake king and she says he’s going to hurt them.

Mary has a dagger and Catherine a sharp hairpin and they say Jenny can get close enough to kill him and then they can take his sword and fight off the other men. Jenny says she can’t that she’s a coward and Catherine says that means she wants to live. Catherine instructs her on where she wants to stab him by poking at Mary with the hairpin.

The carriage stops and the woman are unloaded. Mary demands to know why they stopped. Gifford talks and they realize he’s working for Queen Elizabeth who financed the actors to destroy her credibility. He muses how much she might pay if he rid her of her rival. Jenny makes her move and tries to stab him but he stops her then kills the girl.

Catherine tells him he would do better to hold them for ransom. Catherine pulls her hairpin and Mary tells them it’s poison and they believe it. Mary startles the horse that kicks Gifford and he goes down. Francis rides up and says they found a man at the inn that told them what happened. Catherine looks at the dead girl and takes back her crown then tells Mary you never give up your crown mo matter what.

Catherine tells Francis that he’s a fool. He says Mary risked her life going to see a fertility specialist. She tells him that he’s been too harsh with her and says he needs to trust Mary and be honest with her. She says Mary has a childlike belief that a woman should trust her husband that she wishes were true. She tells him that Mary is a fighter and someone to have on your side.

“Lola” shows up to enjoy her late night bath. Narcisse watches entranced then Lola comes out on the balcony and she tells him she paid a serving girl five gold pieces to take her bath there and she told her someone might watch. She says the girl told her for that amount, the whole castle could watch. Narcisse tells her he’s already working on getting her dowry back.

He says he wants her to know that he understands why she wanted her dowry back – it means freedom from court if she wants it. He says he has the same wish. She says many think women should not have this freedom and he tells her she’s an intriguing game player for someone who doesn’t like court. She lays her hand on his and says the beginning can be promising, but it’s going from there that makes it interesting.

Francis says he was scared of losing Mary today and tells her he didn’t mean the words he said. He says he can’t live this far apart from her. She asks why he’s afraid and says she’ll stand by his side no matter what is going on. He tells her she doesn’t have to be so ferocious and says he was just feeling the pressures of being king. He tells her he will never leave or betray her.

She says lack of honesty is a betrayal but he says he will fix this. She says she believes him and he asks if she means it. He asks if she’s acting the dutiful wife and she says no, she would never do that. He hugs her and buries his face in her neck. She looks sad because he’s still not been honest with her.

THE END!
