Jacob hangs upside down at the playground and a little girl looks at him. She asks how he did it and he offers to show her. He climbs up and then the girl asks if he has any other kids to play with. He says he doesn’t have any other friends. She tells him her name is Jenny and she climbs up to play with him.

Tom comes to tell Marty and Maggie that Rachael is missing. He’s worried because so many people were angry at the church the day before. Maggie tells him she could have disappeared like Caleb. Marty suggests they ask Jacob because he could sense Caleb. They agree it’s worth a try.

Fred comes into the restaurant and asks for a coffee. He sits down with Henry and asks why he wanted to see him. Henry says he went by the old factory that morning and they talk about how their dad would have hated what’s happened to it. Henry says he was thinking they should refurbish the place and Fred says it’s too far gone. Henry says maybe he’s just feeling optimistic. Fred asks if he really thinks the boy is Jacob and Henry says it hasn’t been easy. He says he’s terrified that Jacob will disappear like Caleb did and that made him realize that the boy has brought life into his home again.

Jenny and Jacob run on the playground when Lu gets a call from Marty. She tells him they’re at the park and asks what’s happened. She asks if he thinks someone did something to Rachael and agrees to meet him at the house. She calls for Jacob and says they have to go. He says he doesn’t want to go but she’s insistent. He finally comes but whispers something to Jenny before he leaves. Lu looks around the park and then back at Jenny. He asks if they’re going then waves goodbye to Jenny.

At the house, Marty asks Jacob if he’s ever sensed Rachael. Tom reminds him they all used to have math class together. Tom begs him to think harder. Marty asks if he knows if she’s in Arcadia. Tom starts to get impatient and Jacob says he can’t help. He tells them he’s scared and doesn’t want to help. His hands are clenched together nervously.

We see Rachael tied up and her hands are clenched the same way. She tells them she doesn’t know where Caleb is and asks for food and water. They tell her she hasn’t told them anything. They want to know what she is and where she came from. She says she’s just a person and he says people don’t pop up back from the dead after 12 years. He says they know that Jacob could sense Caleb and they think she can to. She insists she doesn’t know him or how to find him.

Gary and his buddies step outside and they tell Gary they want to cut her loose. He quotes some scripture about the devil and they tell him she’s just a girl. One of the guys says he’s out and Deputy Carl is too. He tells them to get the hell out. Carl asks what he’s going to do and Gary tells them if they tell anyone they’re complicit and just as guilty. Rachael calls out and begs them not to leave her with Gary who grabs up a bottle of liquor and swigs. She wriggles her hands in the ropes trying to get free.

At the lab, Maggie and Eric look at Jacob’s blood. He wants to see Caleb’s blood and Maggie checks her fridge but all the vials of Caleb’s blood are empty. She says that all the other samples are still there so it’s not the equipment. Looks like when he left, his blood went with him!

Marty and Tom pull up at the church to search for Rachael and Tom notices Gary’s truck is there. He asks Bob the landscaper who tells them the truck has been there overnight. They wonder where Gary is.

Jacob gets crabby and wants to go back to the park. He yells at his parents and says he promised Jenny he would go back. He says it’s not fair that he’s being punished for something he didn’t do. She reminds him Marty says it’s best he stays at home today but he’s angry and stomps off. Henry tells Lu an occasional tantrum is normal.

Marty and Tom come to tell Fred they’re worried that Gary has Rachael. Carl shows back up looking shifty. Fred tells them maybe she’s embarrassed and skipped town. He says he won’t do anything without proof. Tom calls Fred ignorant. Marty tries to diffuse the situation and says he’ll let Fred know if they find anything out.

They leave and Fred comes into the dressing room where Carl is changing. He throws him up against the lockers and demands that Carl tell him what he’s done.

Marty and Tom come to Gary’s house and pound on the door. They ask Polly if Gary is home and she says he’s not there and she doesn’t know if he’ll ever be back. She cries and tells Tom she’s ashamed. She says she tried so hard after Tom counseled them. She says Gary has been drinking again and when Dale died, Gary went over the edge.

Marty tells Polly he doesn’t want Gary to hurt himself or anyone and asks if she knows where he might be. She tells them he has a cabin up at the lake and Tom says he can show him. Marty wants Tom to stay but he insists they leave then to go check.

Eric grabs Maggie to show her something important. The blood samples show leukemia and then he shows her another slide. The leukemia cells were cured by Jacob’s blood cells. She’s stunned and asks how and he says he doesn’t know but needs to test it further back in his lab. He asks if she knows what this means and she asks where he got a leukemia sample. He admits he was diagnosed last year and insists that she come to Maryland with him tonight.

Lu knocks on Jacob’s door and tries to talk to him. She opens the door but doesn’t see him. She looks around but he’s gone. She runs out of his room.

At the cabin, Gary continues to drink. He goes into the room with Rachael. She tells him she won’t say anything and says no one would believe her anyway. She asks him to let her go home and she says Arcadia is her home. He tells her he doesn’t know what she is but says it’s time to find out. He pulls out a knife and says if she’s human, they’ll see if she bleeds.

He comes closer and she asks if he’s sure he wants to do that. She says what if he’s right and she is the devil. She asks if really thinks knives can hurt her. She tells him she’s already dead. He holds the knife to her neck and demands she tell him what she is. She tells him she will haunt his nightmares if he doesn’t let her go.

There’s a knock at the door and he tells her not to make a sound. It’s Fred at the door and he tells him to open up – says he knows he’s in there. Gary opens the door and Fred greets him and asks if he can come in. Gary says it’s not a good time and Fred says he’s coming in anyway. He tells Gary that he knows he’s hurting but wants to give him a chance to do the right thing.

Fred opens the bedroom door and sees Rachael and tells her it’s okay. He tells Gary to get out of town and get sober and that he’s taking Rachael. Gary asks how he can take her side and pulls a gun on Fred. He closes the door to the cabin and says that Caleb wasn’t human and neither is she. Fred asks if he’s going to shoot him and Gary says he’ll shoot her. Fred hands over his gun. He tells Gary to think about how this ends and Gary says he’s done thinking and no one is leaving until they figure out what the hell she is.

Lu runs to Henry and tells him that Jacob is gone. They run through the house calling for him and she says his bike is gone and she thinks she knows where he is.

A waitress tells Elaine that it’s her first shift at the restaurant tonight and the more skin she shows, the more she’ll make. Maggie sits with her and she tells Maggie she’s decided to go back to school. Maggie congratulates her and then tells her that Eric wants her to go to Maryland with him to study the resurrected. She tells Maggie it’s a good opportunity but she says she’s not going to go.

Elaine reminds her she’s always wanted to get out of Arcadia. Elaine asks her if this is about Fred and says even though he fell apart for awhile, she should do what’s right for her and not stay just to take care of her father.

She asks Maggie what’s holding her back.

Gary paces and Fred tells him it’s his fault that Dale is dead because he let Caleb walk around free. Fred tells him that is on him but that he needs to let Rachael go. He says it was a mistake but they can fix it. Gary asks if he’ll just let him walk away and Fred and Rachael say they will. He says no and turns the gun on Fred. He says they’ll press charges or kill him and then Rachael will disappear like Caleb.

Fred says Rachael said she was dead and she says she was just saying that to stop him. Marty busts in and Gary puts the gun to Rachael’s head. Tom tells them both to lower their guns. Tom comes in and tells Gary to let her go. Gary says just because he got that freak pregnant, he should walk away. Tom asks what if he’s wrong and comes closer and tells Gary to put the gun down. Gary and Rachael struggle and he shoots her in the chest.

Tom rushes to hold her and begs her to stay with him. She breathes her last and is dead. He cries and holds her to him and sobs while calling her name.

Police cars surround the cabin and the EMTs take Rachael’s body away. Fred leads Gary away in cuffs and puts him in the police car. Fred tells Marty he shouldn’t have come up here alone but he thought he could handle it and make Gary listen. Marty just looks at him. Fred goes to his car and Marty makes a call.

Henry and Lu come to the park and get out of their call yelling for Jacob. They see his bike in the middle of the ball field. Maggie comes to the cemetery and looks at her mother’s grave. She stares at the statue on her grave. Her phone rings. It’s Marty who tells her about Rachael. She’s horrified. She says that means there’s only one left.

Henry and Lu call and call for Jacob and he finally walks out of the woods. They run to him and hold him. Lu asks what he was doing and he says he wanted to see his friend. Jenny comes out of the woods and Henry tells him he scared him. Jacob says they needed his help and he brought them food. Jenny tells them it’s okay and says they can come out. Her parents walk out of the woods and the man says he’s sorry. Jacob introduces them and says they’re like him. His parents are stunned.

At the station, Fred comes in and silence falls. He walks into his office and his secretary asks if it’s true. He says it is and she says these people coming back are turning the world upside down and are wreaking havoc. A man walks in and Fred asks if he can help him. The man says he’s lost and asks how quickly they paved the road. He points to a computer monitor and asks what the hell that thing is. He asks if he can sit a moment to get his bearings. He asks Fred what year it is.

Fred’s secretary gets a call and tells Fred that her sister is back. She says she’s got to go. The phones all start ringing off the hook. Looks like there’s a bumper crop of resurrected cropping up!

Maggie asks where Marty is and he says he’s in the middle of nowhere on Route 11. She tells him it’s not his fault and he says he doesn’t know what else he could have done. She tells him that Eric wants her to go to Maryland and says now that Rachael is gone… He says he understands and that she should go.

Maggie says that’s what she was thinking but she always finds an excuse to stay in Arcadia. He says he knows she’ll do great things. Marty tells her that Fred mentioned something in his past that he’s been hiding from. He says he wants to tell her the whole story and she asks if he wants to come to her office. He sees a woman in the road and stops. He says oh my God. It’s Rachael. Back from the dead again!

Elaine serves up a beer at the bar as a young soldier comes in dressed in a uniform from another era. He asks if this is Korea and they tell him it’s Arcadia. He asks if he’s home. The phones at the sheriff station are going crazy with calls about the resurrected. Fred is stuck in a trance unable to function for a moment. He hears someone say that a woman was waiting when he got home. He says Barbara – his dead wife’s name – and runs out and speeds do
wn the street in his car.

He’s stopped by road work, leaves his car and runs down the street. He rushes through the woods and up to his house. He stops to catch his breath. Dogs bark and he sees his front door is ajar. He rushes toward the house. He comes to the porch, opens the door and looks inside. He sees someone sitting in the living room and goes in. It’s Maggie and she’s crying. She begins to sob and he tears up as well.

Maggie leaves her dad’s house and goes to another house and knocks on the door. Sam answers and she asks – is she here? He opens the door and there is Barbara. Maggie looks at her and calls her mom.
