Supernatural RECAP 1/21/14: Season 9 Episode 11 “First Born”

Supernatural RECAP 1/21/14: Season 9 Episode 11 “First Born”

SUPERNATURAL continues on the CW tonight with a new episode called, “First Born.”  On tonight’s episode Sam is back at the bunker with Castiel (Misha Collins) who notices there is some leftover grace inside Sam.  Did you watch the last episode season 9 episode 10?  We did and we recapped it right here for you.

On last week’s show Dean (Jensen Ackles) was devastated after Kevin’s death and vowed to find the angel that killed him, not only to free Sam (Jared Padalecki), but to seek revenge. Castiel (Misha Collins) arrived at the bunker and suggested they try to separate Sam’s brain from the angel’s so they can talk to Sam and have him expel Gadreel. However, there’s one small problem: the only person who knew how to do that was Crowley (Mark Sheppard).

On tonight’s show looking to reclaim his place as King of Hell, Crowley (Mark Sheppard) asks Dean (Jensen Ackles) for help finding “The First Blade,” the only blade that can kill Abbadon (guest star Alaina Huffman). Knowing he owes Crowley a favor for helping Sam (Jared Padalecki), and also wanting Abaddon dead himself, Dean reluctantly agrees and the two set off on a road trip. However, Dean and Crowley are completely unprepared when they find out who has the blade – Cain (guest star Omundson), the first son. Meanwhile, Sam is back at the bunker with Castiel (Misha Collins) who notices there is some leftover grace inside Sam. If they can extract it, they can use the grace to track Gadreel. The only problem is the procedure may do permanent damage to Sam.

In Missouri, 1863, a man rides up to a cabin and warns the other soldiers that “he’s coming.” They agree to protect the knight no matter what. Suddenly one is possessed and kills the other and then the perpetrator burns out the other soldiers who lit up red like demons. The guy has a wicked looking knife that seems to be made from animal jawbone.

Now – at a bar – Dean drinks and Crowley shows up and asks him to buy him a drink. He tells him that Gadriel has already left so they need to move onto more pressing matters like killing Abadon. Dean says he’s not interested. Crowley wants the “first blade” that he needs to kill her. Dean puts his knife up and Dean says he wants to look through his files for information on the blade. He asks if Crowley wants to hunt with him and the demon says he likes a goo buddy comedy.

Dean pulls out his notebook and says that his dad got the blade but it doesn’t say anything else. Crowley asks what the numbers mean and Dean admits that it’s for a storage locker. Crowley asks him to come along and find his Dad’s man cave and Dean asks how he knows it’s not a trap and Crowley says he doesn’t and that’s why it’s fun. They leave and a demon at the bar follows them.

Castiel eats a sandwich and says it tastes like molecules. He says when he was human eating was annoying but he liked the taste. He says he liked PB&J. He says now the problem is he tastes every molecule and it’s overwhelming and disgusting. He puts the sandwich aside and starts to heal Sam but then gets a look on his face. He asks what’s wrong and Castiel says there is something angelic resonating inside him. He suggests they call Dean but Sam refuses and says they can handle it.

At the storage locker, Crowley is grossed out. He says he’s been inside Sam so they’re practically family and Dean freaks out on him. Dean goes further in and Crowley waits outside because there’s a pentagram on the floor he can’t get past. He reads and says that his Dad interrogated a demon that mentioned the first blade but the rest of the file is empty. They find a photo of a woman – Tara – and go to find her.

Castiel says he found a mention of when an angel leaves a vessel they leave a little behind. He explains there’s some angelic grace left in him, but it’s fading every time he heals him. Castiel says the grace may be helpful and could be used to track Gadriel if they can extract it. Sam asks how and Cas says it’s painful. Sam says they have a guinea pig and Cas asks where and Sam clarifies he’s talking about himself. He shows him an object they need to extract it.

Dean and Crowley come to see Tara at her pawn shop and ask her about his Dad. She asks which son he is and she gets a pain in her knee. She pulls out a gun and says that she gets a pain when there’s a demon. Crowley tries to leave and she says there is a devil’s trap under the rug. Crowley explains he’s the king of hell and she thinks Dean is possessed and flings holy water on him. When it’s clear he’s not possessed, he explains they need the blade to kill a knight of hell. She says there are none left but they explain Abadon is one and she’s come back.

She’s a hunter too and says she destroyed her knee and life trying to find the blade. She says all she found was a location spell that she could never use because she needed essence of Kraken. He says he has some in storage and can be there in back if she’ll let him out of the trap. She tells Dean – if your Daddy could see you now – but shoots a hole in the demon trap and releases Crowley.

She tells him that partnering with Crowley is a bad idea and he says Abadon is worse and he’ll deal with Crowley once he’s done with her. Crowley is back with the missing ingredient and they use the tracking spell on a map of the US. It burns up and leaves only the state of Missouri. Crowley invites her to join them and she says she won’t help if Crowley is along but wishes Dean luck.

The duo pull up in front of a farmhouse in Missouri and Crowley tells him he senses something dark. A guy in a beekeeper suit comes out and Crowley says they have to go – it’s Cain – the father of murder. He says they need to be a world away and they turn to go but then Cain is there and tells Crowley he’s not going anywhere.

Crowley and Dean sit on Cain’s sofa and Dean asks why he doesn’t just zap out of there. He tells Dean he wouldn’t leave him and Dean realizes Cain has done something to him. Crowley explains that after Cain killed Abel he became a demon – the best demon ever. But then he disappeared and no one has seen him since.

Cain brings them tea and tells them he likes bee keeping but that they’re dying because of mankind. He asks them why the king of hell and a Winchester are at his door. He says he’s retired not dead. Crowley starts to spin a lie and Cain takes his speech away. Dean tells him they need the first blade to kill a knight of hell – Abadon. Cain twists a ring on his finger and Dean says he’s not there to get between him and the demonic AARP.

Cain asks how he found him and he says they didn’t – they used a locator spell for the blade. He asks if anyone else knows they’re there and he says no.

Tara gets a pain in her knee and then the demon from the shop comes in saying he’s looking for some friends. She can’t trap him because she destroyed her trap so she shoots the demon again.

Cain tells them to go and Dean demands the blade and asks why he cares if he’s retired. Cain tells them that he raised and trained the knights of hell including Abadon. Dean tells Crowley he should have told him. Cain clarifies and says he killed all of the knights himself. He tells them to get out because he has errands to run. Dean wants to wait until Cain is gone and then bust back in and take the blade. Crowley just wants to leave.

Castiel asks Sam about the trials. He asks why he didn’t complete them. He reminds Sam he chose Dean rather than sacrifice himself in the trials. Sam rants and is furious that Dean made a choice for him that’s costing them all. He says he wants to settle his debts. He gives Cas the scary looking syring and tells him to settle the books.

Dean and Crowley break into Cain’s home and Crowley says it’s the dumbest idea he’s ever had. Dean tells him to sack up and start looking. Sean sees a photo of a woman wearing the ring that Cain had on. The demon pulls up at Cain’s house and says that they won’t believe what Winchester and Crowley found and to send lots of back up.

[9:42:05 PM] Rachel Rowan: Castiel puts the needle into Sam’s neck and tells him the next part is what will really hurt. He begins extracting the grace from him and says it’s working but he needs to push the needle in deeper. Sam tells him to do it but Cas is worried he’ll kill him. Sam tells him – damn it – do it. Sam screams and has a flashback of a number of painful things. He says his body regressed to the state it was in before Gadriel. They didn’t get enough grace for the spell so Sam tells him to keep going.

Dean and Crowley can’t find the blade and then Dean says he knows why Cain went off the reservation and shows him the photo. He says father murder got married. They go to leave but Cain is there. They look out the window and see the demons – Abadon’s guys – and they demand Cain to send out Dean and Crowley.

Dean asks if the spell Cain put on the doors will keep the demons out. Cain tells them he won’t fight with them and Dean tells him boo hoo. He says if they survive they can join him for his last meal in the house before he disappears again. He heads into the kitchen.

Sam tells Cas to keep going because they have to find Gadriel. Cas asks why the Winchesters all run toward death. Cas says his time as a human showed him how important life is and Sam begs him to keep going. He’s tormented over Kevin’s death and doesn’t want him to stop. Cas presses on as Sam screams.

Cain shucks corn as Dean asks him what he’s missing. He says he knows Cain isn’t a coward and Cain asks him what’s up with him and why he’s asking for help. He snaps his fingers and lets the demons in to attack Dean. They  do and Dean goes to work on them. He takes one out but then two have him down. Cain mocks him and says he’s doing great. He beats down another and another.

Cain opens the front door to let in a demon to play with Crowley. The guy knocks him down and then Crowley says he’s good, but he’s Crowley and takes him out for good. Dean kills another in front of Cain as he sips a beer. He asks Cain if it was a quest and Cain says he thinks they’re kindred spirits. Dean reminds him he didn’t kill his brother and Cain asks why and he says family matters and Cain asks where he is now. Dean demands the blade and Cain says he doesn’t have it anymore.

Cas pulls out the syringe and then puts his hand on his head. He heals his wounds instantly and says the rest of the grace is gone and they have to work with what they have. Cas tells Sam that nothing is worse losing him. He says being human changed his view of food and people themselves.

Cas says the only person who has screwed up more things than Sam is him and he knows what guilt and remorse feel like. He tells Sam he’s sorry and that the old him would have jammed the needle in until Sam died because the ends justified the means but his ordeal and the PB&J taught him that angels can change so maybe Winchesters can too…
[9:57:06 PM] Rachel Rowan: Crowley asks how the sword can be gone when the spell brought them there. Cain says he’s the source of the blade’s power. He pulls up his sleeve and shows them the mark of Cain and Crowley genuflects. He says that he killed his brother to save Abel from being corrupted by Lucifer. Abel’s soul got to go to heaven and his was consigned to hell and Lucifer says he had to be the one to kill his brother to save his brother’s soul.

He tells them that his wife Colette knew who he was and forgave him. He said he went after the knights with a vengeance. Abadon possessed Colette and tortured her while she watched. He stabbed his wife to save her but Abadon escaped at the last minute so his wife died and Abadon got away. His wife asked on his deathbed that he not kill Abadon and so he retired.

Dean demands the blade and then Cain takes a knife in the chest and disappears. Abadon’s forces rally outside and Crowley tells Dean he’ll stay as long as he can. At Colette’s grave side, Cain tells her he’s been as good as he can be but now he asks her to look away. Cain is back in the house and offers to give Dean the mark of Cain. He says it’s a great burden and Dean agrees without hearing more.

They clasp arms and the mark moves from Cain to Dean. He asks where the blade is and he says he threw it at the bottom of the deepest ocean. Cain tells Dean that when he calls him that he has to promise to use the blade on him for what he’s about to do. He lets all the demons in and lets Dean and Crowley go. Cain pulls up his sleeve and goes to work. The windows glow red and he takes out all of the demons!

Sam and Castiel prepare the locator spell and pour in the grace they harvested. The water goes cloudy and Sam asks if that’s it. Cas says there wasn’t enough grace and they have to find him another way. Sam says it’s okay and he was right about everything. He hugs Cas and tells him to hug him back. Castiel does so awkwardly. Cas says Metatron is the key to fixing everything and that he will find him.  Cas says they could use more help to find Gadrield and Metatron but Sam tells him they can do it.

Crowley tells Dean that Cain was right and Dean is worthy of the mark. Crowley asks if he’s getting touchy feely and tells Dean that no one hates him as much as Dean hates himself. Crowley says he’ll find the blade and bring it to him. Dean says that he saw that Crowley stood back and let him fight in front of Cain. He says that Crowley knew all along what Cain would do and that he knew they were being followed from the get-go. He punches Crowley in the face and tells him that after he kills Abadon he’s going to kill him. Crowley tells him they’re going to need more help to find Abadon and Dean tells him to get going. He heads off as Dean looks at the mark on his arm.

THE END!!!
