Cassie (aka Esther) lights candles in the greenhouse workroom. She breaks an egg in a bowl, tosses in berries and herbs then some oil. She then writes out something using a fountain pen and puts the lid on a large pan. The pan makes its way to the vampire compound and the lid starts to move startling Hayley, Elijah and Klaus. He lifts the lid, a bird flies away and he reads the note and says it’s an invitation for dinner from their mother.

Back in the ancient days, we see Esther preparing food for her young children but Niklaus is nowhere to be found. Finn tells her he’s hiding in the woods. She goes to find him and he says father wants to take him hunting later but says he’s no good and dad gets angry at him. Esther says when she’s afraid, she listens to the starlings. Finn watches from a ways away. She says a starling will repeat a song and teach it to the others. She says she brought those birds to the woods there and tells him when he hears the birds to remember she’s with him always and forever.

Now, Hayley says this makes her glad she never knew her own mother. She’s ready to kill Esther since she tried to kill their baby. Elijah says not yet – he says at least now they know the body she’s in and can try and decipher her intentions. They agree to take the afternoon and dig in before dinner. Elijah shows up to Marcel’s who tells him Gia is ready to be taught by him. He says he has no interest and tells him that she’s his problem.

Elijah says he came to talk witches – he knows he has one because of the daylight rings for his new disciples. Marcel tells Gia to take him to meet Lenore. He says Mikael is back causing chaos and tells Elijah he needs all the help he can get. Finn goes to meet with Oliver who says he’s there to meet Cassie. Finn tells him his name is Vincent and he speaks on her behalf.

He offers a moonlight ring as proof. Ollie slides it on his finger and asks what happens if he doesn’t want to talk to number two. Finn does some crippling magic as he rubs his fingers together that causes horrible pain. He tells Ollie the ring comes at a price and he’ll begin paying today and threatens him about the other wolves getting in line.

Ollie calls Hayley and tells her about Vincent. Hayley reports to Klaus and says she has a male witch. She asks why his mother hates them all. He says she did love them all once. He says Henrique, his brother, was killed by werewolves and caused her to turn them all immortal. He says that’s when they found out his true father was the werewolf head of the pack that killed his little brother. He says Mikael killed his father and his mother’s lover and says it drove her over the edge.

Hayley says she gets that. Klaus says his mother told him that she didn’t hate them, she just hated what they’d become and tried to kill them all. Klaus says he didn’t know what to believe but he knew he wanted her dead. Hayley says every story needs a wicked witch and says they need to melt her. Gia and Elijah head out and he tries to get her to be quiet. She says he’s going the wrong way. He tells her the first lesson from him is not to waste his time.

She heads off the other way and he follows. They go to a little shop and the woman says to go away. He asks if she’s blatantly practicing witchcraft and she says she’s making an herbal remedy for a neighbor. She asks what an Original wants bad enough to come across the river. He says he can help with her tax problem. He tells her about the body jumping witch and she explains it’s called soul branding and says to tell him what body she’ll be in next she needs an item the witch has spelled.

He says he will retrieve the enchanted item. She also needs a python. He tells Gia to use compulsion to get the python and says it’s lesson two. Gia asks how the hell she does that, but he’s already out the door. The door rings again and it’s Finn. He says he’s sure she can help him. Klaus goes to see Marcel who pours them a drink. He asks Marcel if he still has a necklace he gave him – a leather strap with a bird on it. Marcel says he gave it to him on his 11th birthday and offers it to him.

We see back in the old, old days when Esther spells the necklace and says to clasp the bird if he’s ever lost or scared and needs her. He asks if the others get one. She says she loves all her children but he’s the most special so that’s why he’s the only one to get one. He promises to always wear it. Esther and her son dance later by the fire and she notices he’s not wearing it.

He says it’s fallen off and she tells him to find it at once. Finn has it and hands it over and she tells Klaus he owes his brother a big thanks. The boy is sullen but thanks him. Now, Marcel asks if he wants to know why he wants a necklace his mother made him and Klaus says he wants nothing to do with this part of their sprawling family saga. He thanks him for hanging onto the necklace all these years.

Finn reports to his mother that Kol is still on the look out for the young witch (I assume they mean Davina). She says it’s a shame he’ll miss dinner. She asks about Lenore and calls her stubborn and he offers to persuade the witch. She says to have Ollie do it. She asks if they’ve responded to the dinner invitation and he says they’ve been busy all day.

She tells him to stick to the plan and he says he’s doing exactly as she instructed. Lenore is tied up in a crypt and Finn tells Ollie to find out what her visitors wanted. He tells him to be quick about it. Hayley report to Klaus that Lenore was taken and she says she can go get Lenore to do the spell. Elijah tries to say no but she tells him not to ignore her then expect her to listen. Klaus hands her the necklace. Elijah tells her to go see Marcel and ask for Gia to get the other ingredient.

Klaus asks Elijah what’s going on with them and he says nothing but she’s stronger now. Gia tells Marcel she stole the python because Elijah didn’t tell her how to do it. Marcel asks if she even tried and she asks why he stuck her with Elijah. He says he wants something for him and her both. He says he learned the hard way you need an Original looking out for you. He says Klaus is too wrapped up in his drama and says they need them to see the new vampire group as family.

Gia asks how she can win Elijah over. He says he’s cranky, fussy but has an Achilles heel. He says Elijah always has to try and fix what’s broken. He tells her to just be someone who needs his help. Elijah and Klaus are dressed nicely with a nice table set for the dinner. He tells Klaus it’s a sign of respect and their best chance to find out what she’s up to. Finn shows up in his Vincent skin and he says linen and silk cannot disguise their self-loathing.

He says Klaus is still the same paranoid little boy full of fear. Elijah walks over and asks for an introduction and Finn acts offended that he didn’t recognize his brother but Klaus does and calls him Finn. Finn says that now the introductions are out of the way, they can eat.

Hayley shows up and tells Ollie they have to get Lenore out of there but he says her disappearance will blow his cover. She says they can make it look like he got jumped by the witch’s people. He agrees but tells her not to hit him in the face. Finn and his brother sit and Elijah asks what they’re celebrating. He says his return and reminds them he was daggered in a box for 900 years. He asks what he’s missed and asks what they’ve contributed to society.

He asks if they’ve done more than leave a wake of destruction across the centuries. Finn has two more seats prepared at the table and tells them that their mother and Kol will both be joining them. Klaus asks how he dares face them as a mortal and says his death is inevitable. He throws a knife but Elijah knocks it away. Finn says he’ll carve as the oldest and says they have much to discuss.

Lenore is shocked the wolf mother has rescued her and says after what the bitch witch did to her, she’ll do any spell they want. Finn asks why Klaus kept him daggered in a box that long. Klaus calls him a sycophant and asks if their mother raised him to wash her knickers. He asks what he did to deserve Klaus turning his back on him or was it jealous. He says he coveted the place of the eldest but did nothing to address their family issues.

Elijah tells Finn he’s still tedious. He says like their father, he always hated their supernatural existence. He says he, like this dinner, is dull and asks where their mother is. She’s there and calls them darling and says she missed them too.

Lenore works the spell at her shop and Hayley asks if it will take long. She tells Hayleyshe’s sorry and says you should never have to lose a child. Hayley agrees. Lenore says the spell will leave a mark on the back the hand of Esther’s next body. Lenore thinks Esther is inspired by love in whatever antics she’s doing now but admits that also inspires cruelty.

Esther tells Elijah and Klaus that all her actions were to protect them. Klaus calls her delusional and reminds them of all the times she’s saved them. She remind them of when Klaus challenged his father to a duel. We see him back in the day pinned to a tree by his father’s sword. Esther pulls it out of him and says he’ll be fine. Klaus says his father said he would take the necklace she made him. He says Mikael cut it from his neck and he says he got so mad he attacked his father.

He says he held it up and she says Mikael in his rage struck him with his sword. She tells him he’s a good boy not letting his father touch them. Now, Klaus realizes the necklace wasn’t a spell to protect him but to make him weak. Esther says if he was too weak to kill, he would never activate his curse. Klaus it outraged and says she made him weak and made Mikael hate him. He tells her she rants about the monster he’s become but says she’s the author of all he is. She goes limp and Elijah is there to catch her.

Lenore is chanting. Elijah says she’s gone. Klaus attacks Finn and demands to know where she’s gone but Finn magics him off of him before he can hurt him. Lenore gets a funny look on her face and Hayley sees the mark that has appeared on her hand. It looks like a scarred over burn in an intricate design. She asks the older witch if she’s Esther. Lenore gets a canny look on her face.

Cassie comes to and Klaus asks where his mother is but Elijah tells him she has no idea. She doesn’t even know who they are. Klaus says their mother orchestrated this evening to torture them and vanish and Elijah asks what if they were not the only mind she wanted to poison. Hayley’s phone rings and she tells the wolf girl to answer it. She does and tells Klaus that she’s at Lenore’s shop but then she magics her phone call to an end.

Hayley tells Esther they’ll come for her and the witch says that was the idea all along. She tells Hayley it’s so nice to finally meet her. Elijah and Klaus hurry to the shop and wonder why she wants Hayley. Klaus says it could be to find out about the child, to hurt them. He says it won’t matter when he sends her back to hell. Esther says she was the one who gave her children hope.

She tells Hayley children can save you from the worst part of who you are. Hayley says she doesn’t pity her. Esther says it’s hard when you fail your own child and she knows. She offers to make Hayley normal and not a hybrid so she can have more children. Klaus shows up and she throws a spell at him. He calls her coward for hiding behind magic.

She says she didn’t come to cause war and Elijah says war is all she brings. She says Hayley is free to go. Esther tells them she is there to make their family whole again and says she will take away the vampire curse she inflicted on them so they can be whole again and lead a normal life. Klaus says they would be fools to accept anything she offers.

She’s ripping apart the shop with her power and tells them soon, they’ll beg for it. She blows the windows out and Klaus and Elijah cringe from the glass. Elijah asks Hayley to tell them exactly what their mother said. She says she blamed them for costing her Hope. Elijah says he can’t believe she would accept her offer and Hayley says of course she’s thinking about it.

She tells Elijah it takes her almost dying for him to pay attention to her and she stomps out. Klaus tells Elijah not to follow and says he needs her. Elijah tells Klaus he’s not the weakest among them but the strongest. He says he has always done whatever it takes to keep them all safe. Klaus clasps his shoulder and says it’s wise counsel. He says the rest of the family could learn from him,

Elijah finds Gia at a bar where she performs and asks if she’s on tonight. She says no and tells him she can’t play since she turned and doesn’t know why. He says cadence and rhythm are different for them. He says their senses are altered. He says sounds are different to their ears and emotions are heightened. She listens to the guy on stage and Elijah says it can be hard to express.

Gia says that’s it. He tells her that the joy she found in music can be learned again and he says he can help her. She asks why and he says if someone had done the same for his family, history would have unfolded differently. Gia goes back to Marcel and he asks where she was. She says he was right about Elijah and says he wants to help her – to fix her. Marcel says he’s going to help them all.

Finn and his mom talk and she says tonight wasn’t an ultimatum but an invitation. Finn says they’ve grown very strong. She says she will systematically destroy everything they hold dear to make them accept the offer. She says she took the wolves and will now take Marcel and his. She says she will lie their pride, love and joy to ruin and when they despair, they will beg her to release them from their pain. She says, because she loves them, she will.

THE END!
