Tonight on ABC Family Becoming Us airs with an all new Monday June 29, season 1 episode 4 called “#Heart2Heart,” and we have your weekly recap below. On tonight’s episode, Lathan and Carly grow closer as Lathan opens up about a new relationship; Carly tries to get to the root of why Ben’s having trouble in school.
On the last episode, Carly hosted a camping trip for Ben and his pals, and she banned cell phones in order to promote conversation; Brook and Lathan have clashing memories about their youth; Sutton’s fiancé assists with the wedding planning; Ben got a driving lesson from Carly. RECAP:
#BecomingUs starts with Danielle and her dad Dan looking at dresses online. She asks what’s going on with the woman he was dating. He says it got crazy fast and says she was acting like he was it and they would get married one day. Danielle asks if he would get married one day. Danielle wants her dad dating and says he’s happier when he has a GF and says it’s okay if it’s a BF too. He says most of the men he’s dated were gay and he’s a woman inside by his definition.
He says he would like a man but asks how. Dan says there’s nothing wrong with gay but he’s not gay and wonders what straight guy would date him. Danielle says he should put himself out there on a dating website. They go on Okay Cupid and he asks if he should set up the profile as male or female and Danielle says maybe they have an in between. He clicks woman and transgender. Dan says he’d like for someone to chase him.
He asks to answer these questions about sleeping with someone on the first date and other personal stuff. He asks her about kissing Ben and she says gross and tells him to stop. He checks that he wants a lifelong partner. Danielle says her dad is a good catch and then he gets a message. They open it and it’s just pointers on how to get started. He was excited thinking he had a match already. He thanks Danielle and she says she’s got him.
Carly texts Ben and says Lathan is coming by for advice and Ben asks why. Carly says he needs some motherly advice. Ayton and Ben are working on t-shirt ideas. Ayton says they need a name for their brand and says he likes Concealed then says it would have seal logo that was hidden. Ben likes the idea and says he thinks people will like it. Ben says they need to keep working on it. Ben says Ayton gets an idea and it’s like a boulder going down a mountain you can’t stop.
But Ben is excited about the tshirt idea. He asks Ayton if Lathan seemed tense. Ayton says he was going through some shit but Ben says Lathan is kind of lost. Ayton says Lathan used to live in Evanston but he’s never heard about anyone hanging out with him. Ben asks Ayton what Brook has said about Lathan but says she doesn’t talk about it. Ben says when Lathan walks into a room there should be a wind effect. Ayton says more like a smoke screen but less evil.
Over at Carly’s, Lathan shows up and Carly says he’s a great kid and a sweet person. Lathan says he just wants to talk and get to know each other. Carly thinks it’s strange he’s coming over without Ben but says it’s okay. Carly asks about the camping trip and Lathan says he and Ben talked about him a lot on the trip. Lathan says there are things about him that are different and things he’s gone through. Carly asks what he means by different and Lathan says he’s transgender.
Carly asks if he was born male and Lathan says he doesn’t like to talk about it. He was born female and Carly says he had no idea. Lathan says he perceives himself as male. He says he’s no less of a man because he was born female. Carly asks when he transitioned and he says the moment he hit puberty at 12. Carly says they all have their journey and their past. Lathan says he doesn’t tell people because people he has told have done terrible things.
Lathan says these were people he loved that think of him differently. He says he just wants to be me. Carly says she didn’t want to identify as trans but a gay women but says she felt like she was walking away from a community. Carly says he hears that Lathan is scared how people will react from knowing and Carly says you have to let it go and not let those people in your life. Carly says people like that have no control or input into her life.
Carly says it doesn’t matter what was between your legs when you were born. Ben gets a skype call from California. It’s his Uncle Ronnie, his mom’s brother. He says Ron was around a lot while the whole Carly thing was happening. Ben says Carly is getting SRS. Ronnie says surgery is a big deal and Ben says it’s confusing. Ronnie says you have to feel this and go through it and Ben says he’s just dealing and enjoying life. Ronnie says he has a song they can work on and they sing and play.
Ronnie sings a song about his daddy going away. They work on lyrics and write it down. Ronnie says it’s therapy. Over at Brook and Ayton’s place, Lathan sits sketching while Brook makes them tea. She asks what Lathan is drawing and she asks how Lathan has been. Lathan says he went to see Carly yesterday and it was nice. He says Carly is someone you can trust and he told her about him being a transgender. Brook says she’s proud of him and it must have been hard.
Brook says Lathan is so afraid that his friends will freak out when they find out he used to be a girl. Brook asks if he’s had the surgery or if there are still female things going on. Lathan says ew but Brook says she’s just curious. Lathan says transgender has nothing to do with surgery and says he’s fine the way he is and is fully the way he can be. He says parts of him are more masculine and Brook says she remembers Lathan wrapping himself.
Brook says Lathan sees himself as a straight male who’s into women. Lathan says he’s a male and allows people to accept him as a male. Brook asks what happens when you get to love and what you say. Lathan says he doesn’t have to say anything. Brook asks if he’s avoiding. Lathan says he chooses people he knows would be accepting and compassionate and who will get to know who he is not what he is. He says he’s strong too. Brook tells him she’s proud of him.
Danielle shows her dad a sketch and she talks with her parents. Dan is having no luck on the dating site and is upset but his ex-wife says to give it time. She’s dating a nice guy now that Dan fixed her up with. Dan says he spotted the guy first and she says she and Dad are BFFs and have been for a long time. She asks Dan if he remembers when they first met and he says he was better at finding dates back then. Danielle asks if he had a porn star mustache and says Sarah’s dad calls it that.
We see a handsome photo of Dan back in the day. He says their relationship moved fast and she got pregnant quickly then they had Danielle. Danielle says done and doesn’t want to hear about this. Dan asks if she knows she was conceived before the wedding and Danielle tells them to stop. His ex wants to work on his dating profile to help him. Ben works with his tutor when Ayton texts him and interrupts the study session. She says he struggles with being present.
Suzy comes in and asks if he’s ready to go. Emilia asks Suzy if he’s doing his homework and says he hasn’t done any study stuff she’s asked him to do. She says she feels like she’s the only one pushing him on school and Suzy says she struggles with that and doesn’t want to push him too hard since he has a lot of stress with the divorce and the Carly transition, it’s an added weight for him to bear. Suzy says Ben needs to be a person first. Emilia says maybe she and Carly can hold him more accountable.
Suzy thanks her and says that’s why she hired her. Ben texts with Ayton about meeting up. They are doing some design stuff on the tshirts. Ben says he wants it to work out since nothing else in his life is. Danielle shows up and she says she can help some since she took graphic design last year. She says it’s nice to hang out with Ben. They’re all working in the dark room together. Ayton says he feels dumb because he can’t even open the photographic solution.
Ayton reads the instructions. Ben says he likes Danielle but he can’t trust people and feelings right now. Ayton thinks they’re fooling around while he’s trying to take care of business. They try and make the shirt and Ben and Danielle play around some more. Ayton tells them to calm down. Ben tells Danielle to stop trying to touch him and gets pissy. Danielle says she feels like there’s a wall between them she wishes she could break down. Ayton says the stuff turned his hands green. She thinks #BoysAreDumb.
Lathan is online chatting with a girl named Chris. He says they met and have been doing online video chats. They met once at a party and Lathan says he was shocked that she’s a guy and says he didn’t mean to offend her and says she identifies as a gay male. She talks about how people can’t tell which way she’s transgendering. She says you reach a point where it doesn’t matter and you’re just a person. Lathan asks her ideal relationship and she says she doesn’t know.
Chris says she’s been in only one relationship before. She says love isn’t perfect and comes in different forms and can have an ugly side. Chris asks Lathan what he thinks of trans people. Lathan tells her he knows she identifies as a male and needs to say he more to her. He says it’s awesome. Lathan says there’s more to learn about him as time goes on. Chris says it sounds wonderful. He thinks Chris may be the love of his life and asks if Chris will come visit him.
She says she will and says she wants to talk face to face with him. Lathan goes to chat with Brook who asks about the video chat. Lathan says that’s the person he’s seeing now and says his name is Chris. He says he cares about him and likes him. Lathan says he’s a female to male transgender too. Brook asks if Chris knows Lathan is transgender and he says no. He says it’s because physically he’s this and Brook asks if Chris said he’s transgender or it came up in conversation.
Lathan says it’s not important. Brook thinks Lathan needs to come out to Chris and says she doesn’t want her brother hurt again and says this doesn’t work out well when he’s not honest. Lathan says he’s being honest because he’s a guy and that’s how he sees himself. He tells Brook he’s nervous and says he’s never felt this close to anyone in his life and can be himself with him.
Sutton chats with Emilia about her upcoming wedding. Emilia says they have a mute cute story meeting doing Romeo and Juliet. Emilia says only women wear engagement rings and it’s like their branded like cattle and men should wear something to show they’re off the market. Danielle and Sarah her BFF go out for ice cream and goof around. Ben sends her some photos he took of her. Sarah says she looks really cute.
Danielle says he can be sweet sometimes and Sarah says most BFs don’t do photo shoots with you. Danielle says college is scary because she doesn’t know what she wants to do. Danielle says she kind of wants to go but wants to be close to her mom and dad. Sarah asks if she would keep up with Ben if she leaves and Danielle says long distance is hard and people break up in college. Ben is clothes shopping with Carly for guy stuff. He tries on a jacket and Carly says it’s cute.
Carly tells him Emilia called about his school work. Ben says he’s been stressing and he has a lot on his plate and he’s doing the best he can to get through. Carly says she feels like he’s using her condition as an excuse. Carly says not to do that and says it’s garbage. Ben changes the subject and says he hates talking about school. Ben says Carly fought her whole life for who she wants to be and expects him to be a fighter too but he doesn’t know.
Ben says he can whip himself into action and Carly says to keep working with Emilia and says the bad grades don’t make her want to buy him clothes and says #NoExcuses and #CarlyKnowsBest. Dan asks Danielle and Ben about a color he wants to wear. Danielle asked Ben to take photos for her dad’s dating profile. Danielle does Dan’s makeup and then wants him to curl his eyelashes but he doesn’t want to. Dan demonstrates it on Ben to show how awful it is. He got makeup on Ben accidentally.
Danielle says he needs more practice with eyeliner and stuff and says he’s still learning to do everything. She tells him that beauty is pain. Dan says he always presented himself as male when he was dating then had to tell his dates he’s transgender. Ben snaps photos of Dan and Dan says it’s the first time he’s putting himself out there as who he is and says he’s just a woman that wants to be loved. Daniell and Ben both snap photos.
Dan says Ben and Danielle’s relationship is funny and he wishes they would straighten it out. Dan asks for a photo of her with Danielle. Ben snaps some pics of them. Over at Suzy’s, Ben is online and says sometimes life sucks and it feels like you’re alone but you don’t have to be. Lathan says he was always searching for a person who would accept him completely then met Chris. Ben says you deserve understanding even if you don’t understand yourself.
Dan says he wants a special guy who will find him beautiful as a woman. Carly texts Ben nagging about his homework and says Ben is smart and she wants to push him to become a better version of himself.
