Tonight on ABC Family new show Becoming Us airs with an all new Monday July 6, season 1 episode 5 called “#RulesofEngagement,” and we have your weekly recap below. On tonight’s episode, Carly meets Kevin’s parents at Kevin and Sutton’s engagement party; the arrival of Susan’s family makes Carly uneasy.
On the last episode, Carly hosted a camping trip for Ben and his pals, and she banned cell phones in order to promote conversation; Brook and Lathan have clashing memories about their youth; Sutton’s fiancé assisted with the wedding planning; Ben got a driving lesson from Carly. On tonight’s episode as per the ABC Family Synopsis, “Carly meets Kevin’s parents at Kevin and Sutton’s engagement party; the arrival of Susan’s family makes Carly uneasy; Ben and Ayton seek investors for their T-shirt business; events in Sutton’s life lead Danielle to ponder her relationship with Ben.”

RECAP:
#BecomingUs starts at Carly’s apartment with Sutton watching Carly do her hormone shot. She has to do once a week shots of estrogen and daily testosterone blockers. She says it helps her moods. Sutton wants to watch her do the shot and Carly drops her pants and does it in her leg. Carly says Sutton has been pretty accepting and Sutton says she’s kind of like her step mom now. She says she can’t imagine the shots she has to do. Sutton says Carly is courageous and brave and she’s learned a lot.
Carly asks about the engagement party and Sutton says Kevin’s parents are Floyd and Peggy Thomas. They know she’s transitioning but they are more conservative. She says Jen, Ron and Sid are coming from her mom’s family. Carly says the ex wife’s side of the family is not fond of her now. Carly is nervous about how they will react. Sutton says she would like her mom, Carly and Peggy and Floyd to do a dinner. Sutton says parents meeting is nerve wracking anyway and she has more baggage.
Carly agrees and says she’d love to do it. Ayton and Ben are talking about their t-shirt business and how much it will cost. They talk about the costs of business and it’s up to $2-$3k. Ben is planning on hitting up family for money. He says with family coming in for the engagement party, and Ayton suggets getting celebs to wear their shirts. Ben says he likes Ryan Gosling and Ayton doesn’t know who he is. Ben asks if he’s seen The Notebook. Ayton says it sounds like a chick flick.
Ayton wants Jay-Z and Beyonce. Kevin’s parents Peggy and Floyd are there and Kevin asks if they’ve met a transgender. Peggy says she’s excited to meet her and says she feels like she knows Carly since Kevin and Sutton have talked about her so much. Kevin says they need to use female pronouns and they work on it a little. Kevin says she’s getting surgery and Peggy asks – the big one. Floyd says Peggy will say the wrong thing but it will be okay.
Ben rides his bike to meet Danielle and Dan. He’s not happy that she asked him to meet her while she was dress shopping. Danielle says she has to rely on her dad to take her dress shopping but he’d rather bu shopping for himself. Ben is not happy. Dan says it’s a good time for he and Ben to get to know each other. Her dad says the red one is sexy and she should get it and Danielle says to zip it. Dan says she’s bored and is going to try on some dresses too.
Ben is uncomfortable and then Danielle comes out in another dress. Ben oohs and ahs over it but Dan says she can’t wear it – he thinks it’s too short and tight but Ben really likes it. Dan says the relationship between Ben and Danielle is funny sometimes. He says Danielle is more mature and that might be a conflict. Danielle has it down to two red dresses and then Dan asks if they have the other one in his size. She says she doesn’t know and doesn’t want to.
Carly and Sutton go to the spa for some pampering. She says living farther away means they need to reconnect. Carly asks if she’s nervous for her to meet Kevin’s parents who live in a retirement community in South Carolina. Sutton says no transgenders live there and Carly says she hates that word and prefers trans folks. Carly asks what the wedding planning ideas are. Sutton says she’s going to have Kevin escort her mom to her suit.
She says then Ben would walk Carly down the aisle to the seat and Grandpa Ron walk her down the aisle. Carly says she would not assume to walk her down the aisle since she and her grandpa are crazy about each other. Sutton and Carly are both pleased with the arrangements. Sutton and Kevin are at the restaurant with his parents waiting on Suzy and Carly. They tell them that Suzy, her mom, has shorter hair and tattoos and they laugh.
Floyd hugs Carly and Suzy and then Peggy and they hug Suzy too. It all goes well. Suton is a bit nervous for Kevin’s parents to meet Carly since she says what’s on her mind. Kevin’s parents tell them they love Sutton. Carly says Peggy is bubbly and warm and Floyd is funny. They ask Carly what she does and she says she investigates computer security. Then Peggy asks Carly about the surgery and how you choose where to have it done.
She says she had to choose somewhere in the US because of insurance. Suzy is shocked they’re asking about the surgery and thinks it’s inappropriate. Peggy asks what other countries do it and Carly says most do it in Thailand. That’s what the whole dinner has turned into. Sutton sees the look on her mom’s face. Sutton says her mom feels left out. Then Carly starts talking golf with Kevin’s parents. Suzy is greatly annoyed when Carly cuts her off the one time they asked her a question.
Ben goes with Sydney, his grandma who is 80, his grandpa Ron who is like a hippy with a young soul, and Aunt Jen who is Suzy’s younger sister and is a fireball. Ben says he keeps getting a bunch of questions about what he wants to do with his life. He brings up his t-shirt business that will incorporate his photography and says he and Ayton want to do this. Jen asks where he’s going to get money from and he says hopefully from them.
Jen asks if he wants investors. Ron says to talk to Sydney then asks how much money he needs and he says $3k. Jen asks what’s for and tells him to give her the break down. Ben says she means business. She says if she invests, he has to keep her posted. He runs the numbers for them and Jen says it’s impressive and they all agree to invest. Jen says she will be hard on him and keep track of it to make sure he keeps going. Ben says he and Ayton have to step up their game.
It’s time for the engagement party. Carly talks to Peggy and says she’s nervous about seeing her ex-wife’s family who all have issue with what she’s done to Suzy. She says she just wants to tell them she’s sorry. Brook tells Ben she can’t believe his sister is getting married and Danielle says if Ayton and Brook had kids it wold be funny and Ben says they would be little sloths. Then Danielle says if they had kids they would be cameras in ballet shoes. The ladies leave and Ben says it’s awkward.
Ayton says he hates long-term conversations. Kevin and Sutton show up and everyone cheers. Sutton says she gets to walk into a room and there’s all their families together having a good time. She gives her grandpa Ron a smooch and says he’s the closest thing she has to a father. He has sketches he has made of her. She says he helped raise her since she was an infant and has been the best dad. He tells her she’s the best person ever. We see videos of them as kids.
She says he was her whole world until she was four and they moved to New York and Charlie became her father figure. Carly tells Sutton how much she likes Kevin and says he’ll treat her well. Carly says she’s uncomfortable with the Crawfords, but Sutton says to suck it up. Carly says she’ll see her at the shower and will always be there for her. Jen tells Suzy that Carly has really toned it down and is not as flashy as she thought.
Jen says she still can’t say he about Carly. Carly says sometimes people talk about her behind her back and sometimes it’s true. Jen says she thinks this is Carly’s new addiction. Carly says you should love people for who they are and mind their own business. Suzy and Jen talk and Suzy wonders if once Carly has the surgery, will that be enough. Suzy doesn’t even want to talk about Carly and her surgery. Carly then chats up Ron and reminds him of some conversations they had in the past.
Carly tells Ron he feels free for the first time in his life. He says it wasn’t Suzy, it was him doing it. Carly says it was a good conversation with Ron that he really needed. Next day, Ben and Danielle meet for a walk at the shore. Danielle likes Ben a lot but says they’ve been drifting apart and aren’t on the same page. She says she loves him so it’s hard. They talk about developing film and what a hassle it is. He snaps pics of her.
Sutton shows up to her shower and loves the photos they have everywhere. She says it’s perfect. Her friends show up and then Carly. Jen says Carly is in a jazzy get up. Sutton unwraps her gifts. Brook and Danielle talk about their weddings. Brook says barefoot in the woods in Scotland. Danielle says she’d get married later in life and wants to travel first. Brook says maybe she’s dependent on her relationship with Ayton since she has no family.
Brook asks where Danielle and Ben are now and she says she’s part of the family and is glad of it. She says she wants to be happy without needing a relationship or a guy. Brook jokes about dating girls and says she’s done it. Jen stands to speak and says she talked to Carly last night then says “he” and then says she decided to go on a date with Carly as a lesbian. She says she just wanted to see Suzy’s face. Sutton jokes Carly could have both sisters.
Suzy says Jen was trying to lighten the mood and poke some fun at Carly. Then Suzy stands to make a toast and cries and says she’s so excited she’s found her love and is so happy for her. They all toast her. Jen says Suzy never cries and they all cheer. They snap a photo of Suzy and Sutton then tell Carly to lean in and she calls them her moms. Then Carly decides to do a toast too and Sutton is a bit worried. Carly talks about coming into her life at seven and trying to help fel the dad void.
Carly says Sutton was always special and still is and says Kevin is beautiful and they are perfect for each other. She says she loves Sutton and they hug and kiss. Over at Suzy’s, Sutton is making tea for them. Suzy says she has a headache from the alcohol and another reason. Sutton says she had a lot of fun then asks if Suzy did and says she was worried about her mom. Suzy says it was awkward and Sutton says Carly did too. Suzy says all the conversation about Carly was weird.
Suzy says she worries about the Carly impact taking over her wedding and wants the wedding to be perfect and all about Sutton. Suzy doesn’t want to talk about Carly at the wedding events. Sutton doesn’t want her mom sad and thinking about Carly. Sutton says her mom is worried that the novelty of Carly will detract from the wedding. Sutton asks if she should uninvite Carly. Sutton is planning her wedding and says it’s stressful and more stressful with divorced parents.
Carly says she and Sutton have understanding and respect for each other. Suzy says she likes Carly most of the time but says they are divorced and that means something too. The bottom line is that Suzy doesn’t want Carly overshadowing the big day for Sutton.
