Ed Sheeran Quits Social Media, Claims Technology Addiction Keeping Singer From Seeing World

Ed Sheeran is no longer available via social media, at least for now. The Thinking Out Loud singer posted a message on Saturday, December 12 telling fans he will be taking an extended social media break. Sheeran admitted to missing out on a lot because of his technology addiction and talked about wanting to see the world without constantly checking his phone.

In his goodbye message, it looks like Sheeran doesn’t plan to be back online for several months. The Give Me Love singer’s message said:

“Hello all. I’m taking a break from my phone, emails and all social media for a while. I’ve had such an amazing ride over the last 5 years but I find myself seeing the world through a screen and not my eyes so I’m taking this opportunity of me not having to be anywhere or do anything to travel the world and see everything I missed. To my family and friends, if you love me you will understand me buggering off for a bit, to my fans, my 3rd album is on its way and is the best thing I’ve made thus far. See you all next autumn, and thank you for being amazing.”

After Christmas, Sheeran told fans he plans to have surgery to repair his broken eardrum. The singer injured his ear while jumping from a Yacht in Spain over the summer. After surgery, Ed will not be allowed to travel while his ear heals and plans to take that time for himself. After the eardrum surgery, the diminutive singer says he plans to do some personal traveling and won’t be sharing the experience with his fans.

News of Ed Sheeran’s retreat from the public eye came just one day after ending a 16-month, 5-continent world tour that started in Japan last year and concluded on Saturday, December 12 with a final show in New Zealand. Ed told fans that he will be staying off social media at least until his newest album is done.

Although many of Sheeran’s fans are pretty sad about the social media hiatus, the singer did promise to drop his third album sometime next year. Sheeran even claims his new music will be better than anything he’s released before. Certainly, many of Sheeran’s 16 million Twitter followers and 5.5 million Instagram followers will understand that the red-headed singer just needs to take a break.

Fans who are upset about Sheeran’s social media break should be able to see him at least one more time in the upcoming year. The Kiss Me singer has been nominated for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance. Too bad Sheeran won’t be posting anymore viral selfies during the show.
