#Elementary starts now. Joan hears a man speaking French in her apartment – it’s Sherlock who introduces Luke, a man he says is moving her. Joan says he broke in and is stealing her things. He says he told her that the lock was inadequate and that’s as good as giving him a key. She says she hired movers but he says movers will step into his brownstone over his moldering corpse. She says she wasn’t going to bring it all and he says there’s tons of room in his basement. She says she’s done with all this and was going to donate the rest.

Dana Powell is at a jeweler’s having items evaluated. The store owner offers her a check but she asks for cash. She goes to see a homeless guy named Henry and offers him soup and a sandwich. He opens it up and starts to eat. She shoots him in the chest with a silenced gun then pulls out an envelope with cash in it. She adds a piece of papers and tucks it into is jacket. She walks away. Joan and Sherlock head to the crime scene the next day.

Gregson says the guy has mental problems and had been sleeping in the park for months. Marcus shows Sherlock the envelope and says it contained a strange message, odd amount of money and a mathematical formula. Marcus says the note was placed after he was shot. The message says something about poor people being worth more than rich people. Sherlock sends the maths to Harlan Emple and says he told him it was a formula to calculate damages for death.

It was developed by Arlen Schrader. Marcus, Sherlock and Joan go to his office. Sherlock says men like Schrader calculate the minimum amount to pay to a survivor’s family to avoid a lawsuit or criminal charges. Sherlock says he reduces a life to a pile of money. He says it’s repugnant then Schrader comes out and says he’s heard that before. He says his comment was taken out of content. He says they base value using future income. Sherlock tells him about the victim.

Joan says the shooting was about him and asks who would do that and why. Marcus asks if anyone in particular has it in for him. He says he was in a relationship with an attorney Erin Chatworth. He says it was serious, he dumped her and she was angry. Sherlock asks Erin if her marriage broke up over the affair with Arlen and he asks if he’s angry because the lawyer recused himself from her pants. Joan asks why they broke it off.

Erin asks if they remember Aceway Flight 59. It was a commuter flight that crashed. She says NTSB said it was faulty maintenance. She says he dumped her over that case. She says she does business with a competing airline. She says he dumped her to profit off of 81 people’s death. She says she’s not losing sleep by him being out of her life. Marcus tells Gregson that Erin has a loose alibi but it doesn’t look good. Her ex hubby is okay because he cleaned up in the divorce.

Gregson says the killer mailed the note out to all the press outlets postmarked two days ago. Gregson says Schrader is taking as much heat in the media as the killer. Joan tosses in her bed restlessly. She finally gets up and goes downstairs to the basement where Sherlock is beating on a dummy with sticks. He asks if he woke her. She says it was too quiet and couldn’t sleep. She says he doesn’t have to tiptoe around her with noise.

He says Schrader sent over all his hate mail but says he hasn’t come across a suspect. Joan says it could be someone that hates Schrader for another reason. Sherlock says it may be about business and could be a competitor. Joan wonders if it could be another comp attorney. He tells her she should sleep and says they will review it all in the morning. She says she has to go to her apartment to do a final walk through to get her security deposit back.

Dana is at a meeting of some sort like a grief support or something. She goes home with a man and has sex with him. She counts out a pile of money and she asks if he told anyone about this thing. He says no one knows she’s slumming it. She sees him take a cigarette out and says that changes the math. She shoots him and then takes a stack of the money back. The rest she puts in an envelope and places it on his chest. The guy is dead – shot right through the heart.

Marcus says Freddy was a drummer and says his GF found his body. The note says Dear Michael Cardenas, I just saved you more money. He’s the CEO of the airline and that note was sent to the press as well. Marcus tells Sherlock and Gregson that the killer left $80k. Also both victims had relatives that died on the plane. Marcus says they are chasing down beneficiaries to try and protect them. The landlord tells Joan the place looks fine and says she was a great tenant.

The guy says they already have a new tenant and says the guy wanted it sight unseen. He says all he asked for was an upgrade on the front door lock and sent over a locksmith. They bring Cardenas down to the police station and also have Gail, the airline’s attorney. She says the media is camped on their doorstep and says they’re calling him the Aceway Killer. Sherlock says that they earned that title on their own by neglecting maintenance and killing 81 people.

They show Cardenas the note and asks if he knows Schrader. Marcus says Sherlock thought the killer may be a competing attorney. They ask who else they talked to about the problem and Cardenas says they talked to two other firms. Gail says other firms have different calculations and Sherlock says they’re thinking of flat payments. Gail says the first class passengers would get $10-$15 million while coach passengers would get just a few hundred thousands.

She says under the fixed model, everyone gets $5 million. Sherlock says they have a new suspect pool – families of coach victims. Sherlock asks to see the beneficiary list. Dana is on the treadmill watching the news about the airline. Her doorbell rings and she goes to answer it. It’s Penny, her sister, and she lets her in. She says Dana can’t afford to live this lifestyle anymore and says she’s saying it as her accountant, not sister. Dana says things are going to get better for her.

She tells Penny she’s working on a new project. Penny asks if the money will be paid within 90 days and shows Dana a letter saying the house will be taken. Dana says she can get the money sooner, she just needs to make a bigger fuss. Joan comes to the brownstone and says she thought he was at the police station. She says Marcus brought her up to speed. Sherlock is looking at victims and values. Sherlock says victims in the cheap seats are more likely their killer.

Joan says Marcus gave her ballistics and says the seller remembered it was a white male, 40s with a limp. Joan asks if they’re done with the idea of it being a rival of Schrader’s and he says it’s on a back burner. She asks why he rented her apartment. She says he didn’t want her to get rid of her things and she says he could have just told her that he didn’t want her to move back in. His phone rings and it’s Gregson. He says the Aceway Killer tried to strike again.

Gregson says the victim was shaken up but didn’t get killed. Gregson is at Dana’s house! He says she said she didn’t get a good look at the shooter. He says her husband was on the flight and so she’s in the pool of potential settlements and potential shooters.

Dana describes the shooting to Marcus, Sherlock and Joan. She says she saw him and ran and pressed the panic button on her alarm. Marcus says they found man’s shoe prints. Sherlock asks if the shooter had a limp. She says it was dark and she hid. Joan mentions the gun dealer and Dana asks about it. Sherlock looks around and asks if anyone else lives there with her. He says her bedroom is on the ground floor. She says after Nick died, the house felt big so she moved downstairs.

Joan says they canvassed the neighborhood but no one saw anything. She says the gun dealer is with a sketch artists. Sherlock says the killer is connected to a victim. She asks why he asked about Dana’s bedroom. He says no real reason. He says the shooter entered and existed the property over a fence but there were easier areas of egress. He says the killer was at close range on the other two victims. Sherlock says this was ham-fisted and something is different.

Gregson says to come see this and shows them that Dana is on the TV saying it’s the Aceway Killer then she mentions the compensation. She says says her husband was more than a teacher or a garbage man. Joan says that will push the board to the flat settlement. Sherlock rewatches her on the news at home. Joan says Marcus called and is going to send the sketch of the buyer. Sherlock says Aceway says they are playing under a fixed sum.

Sherlock says Dana wasn’t this angry when they were there. Sherlock says Freddy and Dana were both in a grief group. Sherlock says Dana may be a killer or one of them. Sherlock says Dana may have gained the trust of Henry and Freddy. Joan says Dana would have made much more under the other settlement terms. Sherlock says that’s the question he’s been asking himself. Sherlock says he kept her apartment not because he’s having second thoughts.

He says he questioned her haste so he wanted to keep her options open for her benefit. She asks if he wants her there and he says absolutely. Sherlock says he’s told her that she should fully embrace this life and she’s always had a rebuttal. He says abruptly she is adhering to her words. He says he’s rushing to shed the skin of her former life. She asks if he thinks this is about Andrew and he says – how could it not be?

Joan goes to stare at the wall of airline victims to look. Sherlock follows and says he’s worried she might be over-adjusting in the aftermath of the trauma. He says he doesn’t want her regressing into the safety of the known. He says he doesn’t want to be an enabler. Joan says maybe she does need a safe place and asks if there is a problem with her considering this home. Sherlock’s text dings and he says it’s the sketch of the man who bought the gun.

It looks like Dana’s dead husband. Joan says that means Dana is involved. Joan gets on the computer and Googles the guy. She looks at photos of them and says Dana would have gotten more from the flat settlement. Dana comes home after going on a shopping spree. She unloads her car and heads inside as news of the settlement plays. She finds Penny in her house upset because she didn’t call her when someone tried to kill her.

She asks why Penny is crying and she says some friends called her to tell her about it. Penny says Dana always does well for herself. Dana says Aceway is settling and says she’s relieved she doesn’t have to sell the house. Penny tells her that she loves her and she can tell her anything. She says Dana has always had a fixation with money and what she deserves. She says the person that killed those two people sounded the same way. Dana asks Penny how much she thinks she’s worth.

Dana slips a butcher knife out of the drawer but then the cops pound on the door. Penny says she didn’t call them. They take Dana to the station and Marcus shows her the shoes they found in her closet when she faked the attempt on her life. Sherlock says she thinks she’s entitled to the life she had before tragedy struck Nick’s life. Joan says Nick had glioblastoma, a highly aggressive brain tumor. Joan says he bought a gun and was maybe going to take his life.

Sherlock says her husband was visiting Vermont to establish residency so he could use the assisted suicide laws. Sherlock says Schrader would have researched Nick and found out he was dying and would have cut his settlement. Her lawyer says there’s no evidence but Marcus says the gun Nick bought was used in all the murders and the “attempt” on her life. Marcus says they have a good case and the only question is what kind of prison she goes to for the rest of her life if she cuts a deal.

Joan tells Sherlock she wants to show him something in the basement. She closes the door on him then uses a nail gun to seal it. She says she’ll be right down from the other door. She comes in and asks what he thinks about the furniture. She says she isn’t storing it, she’s arranging it. She says the basement will be hers and they’ll have to leave the brownstone to get down there. He says he gets it and once bricked himself into a section of his apartment.

She says she can meet her own clients down there and will sleep upstairs and work with him. He says he needs to clean out some experiments that may be risky if she’s exposed. He says he’s going to go try to back out of a lease.

THE END!
