Ian Somerhalder only proposed marriage to Nikki Reed because he lost Nina Dobrev. In fact if Nina hadn’t rejected Ian’s engagement request with a loud ‘no’ he would never have been with Nikki at all. Ian Somerhalder and Nikki Reed are engaged, and Nina Dobrev has her legion of boyfriends and hookups waiting at her beck and call. Now, most The Vampire Diaries fans are unhappy with the way things have played out, especially since they were still holding out hope that Ian and Nina would eventually reunite. And although reports from The Vampire Diaries set confirm that Ian and Nina are talking and getting close again, it’s unlikely that Ian will dump Nikki to go back to Nina – especially if the rumors are true, and Nina actually dumped Ian because she didn’t want to marry him.
Obviously, the age difference between Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev was always going to be an issue, even before things got serious. Ian Somerhalder is 36 years old, and Nina Dobrev is 26 years old – with a ten year age difference, of course both Ian and Nina are going to want different things out of their relationship. And based on all the stories we’ve heard and all the reports coming in from our sources, it’s pretty clear that the biggest reason Ian and Nina broke up was because Nina didn’t want to settle down – and Ian did.
In fact, some of our sources even claim that Ian actually went and proposed to Nina, but she turned up down because she wasn’t ready to get engaged, get married, and start a family. And at 35 years old, all of those things were on Ian’s mind. So yes, he and Nina broke up, and yes, things remained awkward for a very long time. Then, Ian went and found someone more age-appropriate, and who wanted all the same things he did. Granted, we can’t say whether Ian Somerhalder and Nikki Reed will last, especially since they’ve only been engaged for a few months. But from everything we’ve heard, I think it’s safe to say that Ian only proposed to Nikki because he couldn’t have his first pick, Nina Dobrev. Isn’t that sad?
