Tonight on Showtime Season 2 of Penny Dreadful premieres with an all new Sunday, May 3 season 2 premiere called, “Fresh Hell,” and we have your weekly recap below. On this evening’s episode, season 2 begins with Vanessa [Eva Green] being barraged by an onslaught of disturbing occult images brought on by Evelyn Poole.
Penny Dreadful refers to the penny dreadfuls, a type of 19th century cheap British fiction publication with lurid and sensational subject matter. The series draws upon many public domain characters from 19th century British fiction, including Dorian Gray from Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, Mina Harker from Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and Victor Frankenstein and his monster from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.
On tonight’s episode per the Showtime synopsis, “season 2 begins with Vanessa being barraged by an onslaught of disturbing occult images brought on by Evelyn Poole. Meanwhile, Ethan decides to leave London because of the massacre he committed; Dr. Frankenstein tries to bring Brona back to life; and Malcolm returns to London and learns that a new evil is haunting Vanessa.”

Tonight’s episode of Penny Dreadful kicks off with Vanessa walking through a snowy park – you can hear a woman’s voice chanting a curse and Vanessa drops to her knees and begins breathing heavily. Meanwhile, Ethan wakes up on the floor of a club with blood smeared all over his face – he stands up confused and looks around. The entire bar was ransacked and he is surrounded by dead and mutilated bodies.
Ethan corners Vanessa and says they need to talk, it’s an emergency – they hop in Vanessa’s carriage. Ethan announces that he just came to say goodbye, he explains “I am not what you think I am.” He says he needs to get away before he hurts someone in London, he is going to Spain or Russia. Vanessa argues that they need him there to fight the creatures, Ethan says he needs to leave to fight the creatures inside of him. He admits that he keeps having blackouts and when he wakes up “there is usually blood.” Vanessa isn’t scared – she wants to help him.
The carriage comes to a halt in the dark street and Vanessa and Ethan can hear the driver screaming. Suddenly, creatures come climbing through the windows, screaming and clawing at Vanessa. After fighting for their lives, the creatures suddenly stop and leave – before they go they flip the carriage that Ethan and Vanessa are inside of. One of the demons squeals something in a foreign tongue to Vanessa before it leaves. Vanessa and Ethan climb out of the carriage and realize that the demons not only killed the driver, but also slaughtered the two horses. The demons watch Vanessa from around the corner as they morph back in to human women and put up their hoods and walk away.
Ethan takes Vanessa home – she is still in shock from the attack and can barely speak. He begs her to tell him who the demons were that attacked them so that he can help her. Vanessa doesn’t want his help, she reminds him that he was leaving town – and tells him to get out. Ethan agrees to leave her house, but says he is coming back tomorrow. Meanwhile, Frankenstein is working on a new project – his Creature wants a mate and he is trying to create him one with Brona Corft’s lifeless body. He dips her body in to a vat of water, and tells his Creature they will have to wait until tomorrow to see if it works.
Malcolm and his wife are paying their respects at Mina’s grave, he tells his wife that it is time for them to get back together and he wants her to move to London with him. His wife tells him they will remain married, but she will never be with him as husband and wife again. Malcolm argues that he tried to save Mina. His wife scoffs that they have “no more children for him to save or kill” before she storms off.
Frankenstein’s Creature is wandering the streets and looking in shop windows – no one seems to be hiring, or looking for a Creature to work for them. He spots a sad little boy sitting on the corner begging for change – he stops at a Waxwork store with a sign on the door that says they are hiring. He wanders inside and is surrounded by lifelike statues made out of wax. He meets the shop-owner and he gives him a tour and explains what his job will entail. The owner says Creature will have to meet the rest of the Putney Family to make sure they approve of him before he hires him, he invites him to come back at 7:00 for the meeting.
Inspector Rusk is investigating the massacre at the pub that Ethan woke up in. The place is still in shambled and covered in blood but the bodies have been removed. He informs the other cop with him that this time is different, they are going to catch the culprit – because there was a survivor.
Ethan arrives at Vanessa’s house the next day as promised – he learns that she never left her bedroom all day. Ethan is worried, he has never seen Vanessa frightened before, she always stares down everything that comes her way.
Frankenstein is hard at work in his lab – he hears a noise coming from the vat that he put Brona’s body inside of the day before, he heads over to investigate. He leans over the tub and talks to Brona’s dead body – he admits that it is good to have someone to talk to. He asks Brona’s body who she will be when she wakes up. Then he proceeds to rub Brona’s body and is fondling her breasts when there is a knock at the door – Ethan has summoned Frankenstein to Vanessa’s. Meanwhile, his Creature meets with the wax-worker’s wife and she gives him the job. She demands to know what his name is, he says “John Clare.” Afterwards they introduce John to their daughter Lavinia, she is blind and has no idea what he looks like, she feels his face when she meets him.
Malcolm arrive at Vanessa’s house where Frankenstein is checking her vitals – he says that she is fine, she just needs rest. Vanessa and Ethan describe the demons to Malcolm – Vanessa reveals that they were speaking “verbous diablo” and they were sent from the devil. According to the story, the devil took the god’s words and turned them inside out. Frankenstein scoffs that it is all a myth and there couldn’t have been demons from the devil speaking a dead language. Vanessa admits that she began rambling the language too – but she has no idea what she said, whatever it was scared the demons off. Vanessa tells Malcolm she thinks that the demons are witches, and come at night.
he episode ends with the main witch sitting in a bath tub filled with blood and smoking a cigarette – she heads downstairs where four witches are waiting for her. She tells them that she is disappointed in them for failing their mission last night and not killing Vanessa. They argue that Vanessa has a protector – a man, and he is very strong. And, Vanessa spoke the language to them. The head witch tells them a story about a general who brought back skulls from every battle he used to say, “remember that you are a man and you will die.” The head witch slashes one of the wtch’s throats and kills her and orders the others to “take her away.”
Frankenstein rushes home in the middle of the storm and his Creature is waiting for him in the lab – they began racing around like mad men trying to get the rod up on the roof to generate electricity from the lightning. Frankenstein begins pushing a bunch of buttons and levers while his creature screams at the sky “Please let her live now!” There is a spark of electricity and the Creature is shocked and flies backword, everything starts going up in smoke and Frankenstein turns off all of the levers. They both watch in shock as one of Brona’s hands come out of the tub – she sits up and takes a deep breath.
Tonight’s episode ends with Vanessa in her room, she is performing some sort of ritual – she is kneeling on the floor in the dark in front of a candle, she slices her fingers and begins smearing blood all over the floor and chanting in another language.
