After more than a decade of service, Prince Harry is saying goodbye to his full time service with the army. Prince Harry has had a long fulfilling career in the Armed Forces and has participated in two tours of duty in Afghanistan, launched the Invictus Games, an international Paralympic-style sporting event that was originally designed to help raise awareness to the recovery of the Wounded Warriors, as well as support rehabilitation for the charity. In addition, Prince Harry is a qualified Apache Aircraft Commander. But now, Prince Harry has decided to leave the armed forces.
After spending the past few months serving in Australia and completing a tour in New Zealand, Prince Harry announced his decision to retire. General Sir Nicholas Carter commented on Prince Harry’s leave and spoke very highly of the prince. He said that Prince Harry had “achieved much in his ten years as a soldier. He has been at the forefront throughout his service.”
While Prince Harry will be leaving the Armed Forces, he will not be leaving his duties behind completely. According to E! News, beginning in the fall, Prince Harry will spend his time volunteering with the Personnel Recovery Unit of London District and aiding soldiers with recover from their wounds or injuries.
In the meantime, Prince Harry will be spending time in southern Africa working on various projects. His work will cover a large variety of places including Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, and Botswana. Prince Harry plans on learning more about the environmental education programs through a first hand experience.
Director of Conservation Programmes at the Zoological Society of London, Jonathan Baillie, released a statement saying, “Prince Harry will be working on the ground gaining experience in areas facing some of the greatest conservation challenges. We at ZSL have been delighted to play a part in pulling together a program that will be tough, but rewarding. After this period, Prince Harry will be one of the best-informed ambassadors for the conservation community on what is really happening on the ground in Africa. His experience will be of great value.”
