RECAP:
In order to understand Mary, you have to know where she’s coming from, especially when she told her daughter Katie-Ann last week that she was never going to make it out there in the English world. Many of us at home found that to be incredibly harsh coming from someone who’s generally understanding.
That scene from last week was not Mary. Not the one we’ve come to know anyways. On tonight’s episode, it’s time for truth to be revealed. And we did get one! We found out what happened to Mary when she once tried to go English herself.
Apparently, when she was younger, Mary had run away from home in order to join the circus. And at the time she felt like that was the only place she could go after leaving but, after a while, she spent time traveling the countryside. She came to meet a young man named Edward. Only Edward proved not to be one of the good ones.
In fact, Edward eventually abandoned Mary once she revealed she was pregnant with his child. So Mary, left with no other choice, had to return home in order to receive help. And, surprisingly, her community welcomed her back with open arms.
They took her back knowing she was pregnant and, rather than shun her, the community helped out with baby clothes and were frequently seen checking up on her condition.
After about four years, Mary was able to meet and her future husband. And he went on to adopt her child, thereby removing any leftover stigma. It’s possible Mary got off a lot easier back then than she is now.
But it explains why she’s so wary about her daughter Katie-Ann going off into the outside world. She didn’t say those words earlier to be cruel. She simply said them from experience of what a young girl might have to face after suddenly being thrust in the English world. And, though she may deny it, there could have been some jealousy on Mary’s part.
She never made it but, unlike her, her daughter appears to be following a well-thought out plan.
Katie-Ann didn’t just leave on a whim one day. She’s been working a side job and already has her own car. So that, in addition to having her brother and sister-in-law’s help, means she’s in a much better position than her mother ever was.
As for Mary, she went back to the Amish lifestyle, yet she’s not particularly happy. When Kate offered her the opportunity to break a few more rules, Mary couldn’t wait to join. She started to use electricity, so soon she managed to help Kate make her complete seasonal line for an upcoming photo-shoot.
Kate wants to be a fashion designer, so not only did she need to complete a fashion line but she also had to select models. And guess who volunteered to help because they just love Fashion Week?
Meanwhile, Jeremiah is back to being shady. He was spotted by Abe and Rebecca shopping in English clothes and so they confronted him about what he’s doing to Mary. Mary had taken charge of him so every one of his mistakes is bound to reflect on Mary. Jeremiah never once thought of that when he was betraying her friendship.
Later, he justified staying silent because he felt like Mary wasn’t being good enough at being Amish to judge him.
Mary had allowed Kate and the photographer to use the B&B for the photo-shoot. She also helped the models with their makeup. So, really, Mary was enjoying herself far too much to think about the Bishop. Or her husband.
Jeremiah stayed silent and Abe eventually went after him looking for answers.
It was the English clothes that made Abe question Jeremiah about his story. Earlier, Jeremiah had tried to downplay everything and said he was just shopping. But Abe’s investigation yielded results. He found Jeremiah working at a bar in his English clothes so it actually looks like the other man has been lying to everyone for months now about returning Amish.
