The body of Captain Hornstock’s third ex-wife Janice was found one morning. So it was only natural that Hornstock came under suspicion.

Yet Villa had believed her captain when he said he didn’t do it nor that he had anything to hide right up until an Agent Foito from Internal Affairs arrived on the scene. The agent had asked the captain several questions about the night before including if he had any disagreements with Janice and Hornstock was able to answer every one of those questions in a way that made him look like he was at ease. And so Villa felt put off as she was watching the interrogation. She knew for a fact that Hornstock hated small talk and that he had been stressed before Foitio showed up.

So that in turn made her question why her Captain had readily prepared his answers before Internal Affairs could send someone. And unfortunately she was only left with one answer to explain what she had seen. Hornstock must be hiding something.

Although, neither Rosewood nor Villa actually believed that Hornstock would do anything that would have harmed Janice. They both knew him on a personal level outside of work and he had never came across as that kind of man. Plus he had purposely brought in Rosewood on the case because he felt Rosie was the best man to handle the autopsy. So that just didn’t sound like someone that was guilty.

Only Hornstock did lie to Internal Affairs and Villa and Rosewood had figured out what he was hiding. Apparently Hornstock had seen his wife on the day she died. She had to gone to the track to get some money out of him and the two wounded up having a fight. So Hornstock knew how that would look and that’s why he tried to lie.

But Internal Affairs had a little bit more on him than mere video from the horse track. They had run ballistics on his gun and it came back as their murder weapon. So they arrested Hornstock truly believing that he would be stupid to hand over the murder weapon and they were willing to stop their investigation right there.

And thankfully not everyone shared their stance. Rosewood continued to study the case and in order to gain access to the body that had been taken to the Medical Examiner’s officer – he knew he had to make peace with Villa. Villa was still holding a grudge because she found out he had been dating her psychiatrist but Rosewood was someone that refused to be ignored. So eventually he wore her down and snuck him in to see the body.

So Rosewood found out the victim had been shot by a distinctive bullet. And it was that bullet that finally proved someone had been setting Hornstock up.

See, Hornstock was many things but Internal Affairs were seriously doubting his intelligence when there was no way he could have risen to his position without some smarts. So Rosewood and Villa presented them with evidence. They showed the bullet had been shot at the very same spot that Hornstock likes to visit for private shooting. And then they pointed out to internal affairs that Hornstock wouldn’t have shot his ex-wife at his own sanctuary.

It just didn’t make sense unless someone was intentionally making Hornstock appear guilty. Therefore Internal Affairs released Hornstock from custody and the captain was able to give Rosewood a walk through at Janice’s house. Janice it seems had never gotten over Hornstock so she still had photos of him everywhere as well as a scrapbook of all his arrests.

But for some reason she highlighted the people he arrested in that scrapbook of hers. So Rosewood, Villa, and Hornstock all went to check the man out and after he was done shooting at them – their perp admitted that he did know Janice. Janice had owed him money and when she couldn’t’ come up with it then she tried to hire the other man to offing Hornstock for the insurance policy still out on him.

So that money Janice had been asking Hornstock for earlier was actually for his own hit. And when she didn’t get it, the other man decided to cut his losses and simply kill Janice to stop her from ever ratting him out.

And, not that surprisingly, what Janice did made Hornstock realize how much his ex-wife must have hated him. Though that revelation didn’t affect him as much as Rosewood hoped because ultimately Hornstock didn’t want to change. Or start an open line of communication with any of his wives.

He likes not listening to them and that’s why he’s been married four times.

Yet what’s Rosewood’s parents’s excuse. His father finally came back from his book tour and it turns out the older Rosewoods are getting a divorce.

THE END!
