#Supernatural starts with Charlie being followed by two men through an alley. She hides in fear. They stop and turn and one of the men spins a magical compass thing then pulls out a gun. It points them to her hiding spot. They creep up and check dumpsters in the alley. She springs out, stabs one and pins the other with her sword and demands to know who they are and why they’re following. The guy says he’s following what’s in her bag and says it’s belongs to his family. He says she can’t even read it. He says his people will never stop and he lets her know they’ve been following her.

She’s distracted by the tattoo on his wrist and he’s able to knock her sword away but she skitters off. The guy yells after her that she can’t run forever. Castiel and Metatron are in the car and Cass turns off the radio on Alanis Morisette’s Ironic. Meta complains then says some of the aspects of the songs are hardly ironic, but it sure is catchy. Meta says since he became human he has all these feelings. He blathers on and Cass gets annoyed. Cass calls Sam and asks if he can just kill Meta now. Sam says he can do what he wants after he gets his grace back from him. Meta says he can hear them.

Meta keeps chattering and Cass punches him. Dean comes in and Sam plays wrong number and hangs up on him. Meta laughs and Cass punches him again. Sam tells Dean he’s been double checking things and Dean tells him he found out the Mark of Cain is an actual curse and says he heard it from Rowena and Crowley and says she tried to kill him but the Mark protected him. Dean tells him Rowena is Crowley’s mother and Sam is stunned. Dean gets a call from Charlie who’s distraught. She says she’s tired, bleeding and in a phone booth. She says she got shot and stitched herself with dental floss.

Sam says she needs to go to a hospital but she says some guys are still after her. She says they’re Southern fried d-bags and they’ve been after her since she found the book of the damned. Charlie says she can’t read the book and the language is like nothing she’s seen. She says it’s a spell book for creating or undoing any kind of damnation. Charlie thinks it’s what they need. She says the guys following her are well trained and spotted an occult-looking tattoo. She says they’re somehow tracking the book and have been after her since it came out of the ground.

She says the book is old, scary and she’s never seen anything like it. They agree to meet her at a cabin outside of Des Moines. Sam and Dean pack up for the trip and Dean finds a lead lined cask with occult symbols he hopes will block the tracking spell. On the road, Sam tells Dean he’s happy to see him positive for a change. Dean talks about what he’d like to do if he can get the mark off including going to the beach and picking up honeys. Cass watches Meta dig into a huge pile of waffles and the guy is moaning in pleasure as he eats. Cass rolls his eyes.

Meta says food far surpasses the descriptions he’s read. Then Meta talks about how the food goes in one end and comes out the other and says it’s sorcery. He asks if Cass misses this and he says he doesn’t miss indigestion. Meta asks if he misses the sensation of it all, touching the divine and the mundane. Meta says they have a lot in common but Cass says to stop it. Cass reminds Meta he killed his friend and Meta says Dean is mostly fine. Cass says they have hit three safe houses and all are empty. Cass says either he lost his grace or he’s stalling.

Meta says he knows as soon as he hands over Cass’ grace, he’ll kill him. Meta’s stomach growls and he says he needs to use the little boy’s room. Cass hauls him up and into the bathroom. A guy is lurking at the counter with an angel-killing knife. Sam and Dean meet Charlie and greet her warmly. They ask for the book and Charlie says 700 years ago, a nun had visions of darkness, then emerged with the book. She says each page is written in her blood and each page is made of her skin. She says it’s been used by cults, covens and the Vatican even had it for a while.

Dean leafs through the book and hears whispers as he goes. Sam pulls him out of his reverie. Dean has moved across the room somehow and says he doesn’t think he should touch it again. He goes to get their stuff and Sam tells Charlie that Dean is not getting better. He says they need the cure fast. Meta apologizes to Cass for the poop mess and says he must be lactose intolerant. The bearded guy is lurking out back of the diner – he’s an angry cupid – and says they both corrupted heaven. Cass saves Meta then the guy gets the drop on Cass and Meta takes him out.

Meta tells Cass he owed him that save. Cass says it changes nothing. Meta says sarcastically – you’re welcome. Charlie shows Dean a sketch of the tattoo and Dean checks a book of clans to try and find it. Sam says he thinks the words are Sumerian but says it’s all gibberish. Charlie says she thinks it’s in code. Dean looks at the book with longing and has to tear his eyes away. Sam says they should work with his notes and put the book up for a while. Sam puts it in the magic blocking box. The two d-bags show up at a gas station. One listens and then pulls out his wonky compass and spins it.

He says she found a way to hide the book and says it was there on that road and so was she. He tells his pal to send out the boys to work the road and ask about her. Meta leads Cass to a library and tells him he has no idea where it is. Meta says he had another angel hide it even from him. Cass puts his finger into his bullet wound and Meta screams. He says he had it done that way in case someone tried to torture it. He says he told the angel to hide some clues in his favorite books. He asks to have his cuffs unchained.

Cass does and Meta goes to a book and finds a paper that says “what is the maddest thing a man can do?” Meta says that will lead to another clue and then his grace. Charlie says even Alan Turing couldn’t crack this. Dean says the people following her are the Stein family and they are way wrong. They use spells to create disease and helped the Nazis. Dean says all their spells came from a book of unspeakable evil they lost a while back. Dean says dark magic comes at a price and when you use the book there’s biblical repercussions.

Dean tells them the book has been calling to him and the Mark and says it wants him to use it but not for good. Dean says they have to get rid of it – burn or bury it. He says they’ll have to find another way to fix the Mark. Charlie asks if he’s giving up. He says no and he can’t die anyway with the Mark on him. Sam says he can’t watch Dean become a demon again and Dean says he’ll just have to lock him up again. Sam says to let them translate the book and they can deal with the consequences later. Sam says he can’t lose him but Dean says that’s not what Sam said before.

Dean says the book is not the answer. He says the book can’t fall into the wrong hands and that includes him. Dean says he’s going to go pick up snacks for Charlie and leaves. Sam says there must be a way to fix it. Meta says he and Cass are like buddies from a comedy movie. He says they were good at the diner but Cass says no more of their brothers and sister should die. Meta says Cass is still using the company lines but no one cares about it anymore but him. Meta asks who is Cass now and says he’s not an angel of the Lord and is walking the earth like the guy from Kung Fu.

Meta ask what he’s going to do when he’s done and asks if Cass will go back to heaven. He says Hannah has restored order up there and doesn’t need him. He asks Cass what his mission is. Cass tells him to shut up and keep looking. Meta uses his blood to draw symbols on some books and the letters glow. Cass chokes and falls to his knees. Meta says Cass came so far only to drown in shallow waters then quotes Alanis and says – Isn’t it ironic, don’t you think?

Charlie asks what Dean meant by saying Sam changed his mind. Sam says they had a chance to close the gates of hell and Sam needed to die to do it and he was okay with it, but Dean wasn’t so he saved him. She talks about how this became her life being a hunter when she wanted to run a start-up and marry ScarJo. Sam says when Dean came to get him at school, he thought – one more job. Then he says when he lost Jess, he thought the same thing. He says it was always one more job. She says he’s the Dread Pirate Roberts of hunting.

Sam says this is his life and he knows it now and loves it but can’t do it without Dean and doesn’t want to. He says if Dean is gone, he’s done. Charlie says she gets it. Cass lies in pain on the floor and Meta says now he can get what he really came there for. He gets the new riddle and it asks what two things you need to succeed in life. He says it’s ignorance and confidence. Meta asks if Cass and Sam really thought he wouldn’t have a back-up plan. Meta hid a demon tablet there. Cass found his grace while Meta was stalling.

Cass unscrews it and inhales it and he’s got all his power back. The library swirls into a vortex of destruction and Cass stands tall and glowing and we see the shadow of his wings on the wall behind him. The d-bag is at the store when Dean shows up for snacks. He’s behind the counter pretending to be a clerk. Dean brings up his purchases and Dean spots the tattoo. He hangs the guy the cash and says he’s just passing through. Dean sees the dead clerk on the floor in the security mirror. He pulls his gun on the guy and tells him not to move. Another sneaks up behind him and gets the drop on him.

They ask who Dean is and then the one guy sees the Mark of Cain on him and asks how he got that. Dean asks what’s it to him. The guy tells Dean to call him Jacob and then he looks at the snacks Dean was buying and asks if these are treats for a little red-headed gal. He says Dean must have hid the book in a lead lined number. Dean says he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Jacob says the clerk told him the same as Dean – that no one has seen her. Jacob says the book of the damned wants to be found and come home. He asks Dean if he wants to use it to get the Mark of his arm and says power is wasted on the weak.

Jacob says the book can remove the Mark but he’ll do far more harm than good taking it off. Jacob tells him to tell him where the book is. Dean mumbles and the guy gets closer so he bashes him in the head. Dean shoots one of the guys who doesn’t stop even though he pumps him full of lead. It takes a full magazine to put him down but Jacob got away. Dean’s phone got broken in the scuffle. He gets back to the cabin and says the Steins found him. Dean says he had to put a whole clip into one before the guy went down. Dean says they have to destroy the book now.

He says it’s calling and wants him to run off with the book. He stokes the fire and tells Sam to burn it now. Two guys come through the windows and tackle Charlie and Dean. Sam hustles to get the book out of the steel box. Charlie stabs one and Sam gets it open. Jacob is there and Dean shoots him again and again. Sam stabs him and Jacob chokes him. Sam kills the guy but manages to get the book into the fire. They watch it burn. Cass tells Sam that Meta got away with the demon tablet but Sam says he did the right thing by getting his grace back.

Cass tells Sam he did right in burning the book and says they’ll find another way. Charlie shows up with beer and sees Cass and Sam introduces them. She hugs Cass and says she thought he’d be shorter. She says she heard he got his mojo back and asks can’t he just cure Dean. Cass says it’s not that simple and she says it never is. Charlie asks if he could do something about her carpal tunnel. He touches her head and says her carpal tunnel and bullet wound are healed and she asks if they’re best friends now. Dean shows up and greets them – he’s got pizza. He asks if Cass is back at 100% and asks how.

Cass says Hannah got the location of his grace out of Metatron. Dean says they were due for a win. He tells Cass welcome back. Dean opens beers for them. He and Sam clink bottles. They eat pizza and hang out. Charlie makes a paper fortune teller. We see that Sam saved the book and didn’t really burn it. He threw another book into the fire instead and hid it in the lead box so Dean and Jacob couldn’t sense it. Sam meets Rowena and says he doesn’t trust her but says he needs the Mark of Cain off his brother and he thinks she can do it. Rowena says they can discuss terms.
