RECAP:

#TalkingDead starts with Chris Hardwick asking who the hell is honking the horn. Tonight’s guests are Scott Gimple, Greg Nicotero and Ethan Embry (aka Carter who got his face bit off). Chris says the UK and other parts of the world have the show there now too. Chris welcomes Scott Gimple and Greg Nicotero and asks about the time jumping and the black and white. Scott says it was back loaded with the big plan and a lot of emotional points for contrast.

He says he and Greg talked about black and white or oversaturating but didn’t want it to look too cheery. Chris asks why the non-linear story and Scott says there are a lot of big things and then small quiet things. He says there’s the horde then the scene with Rick and Morgan on the porch. Chris says Morgan’s role is the humanity now since Rick isn’t feeling it now but Rick was 100% right about Carter. Scott says Morgan is fighting something in himself too.

Chris says the episode has a huge scope and asks about the challenges shooting it. He asks about the herd. Greg says his background in effects helps him visualize these things. He says the sketches he made turned out just like he imagined – especially the quarry. He says they used CGI walkers and practical walkers and says the quarry is four times larger than they had. He says they shot on the edge of the quarry with big cranes.

Chris asks how many walkers they had and Greg says close to 1,000 with 300 on the biggest day. He says they set up an assembly line to spray down actors with walker makeup. Scott says Greg is the Henry Ford of walkers. He says they had 12-15 makeup artists working all day long. Chris says it answered the question of how Alexandria survived so long. Greg jokes that someone who drove by the shoot honked their horn and they didn’t have the money to take it out.

Chris offers the first poll: who was blaring the horn? Ron, The Wolves or a new threat. 68% of viewers think it’s the Wolves.

Now it’s time for the In Memoriam. We see tight squeeze walker, drive-by walker, cliff diving walkers, worst parade ever walkers, break in case of emergency walkers, Carter. Then we see – let’s face it Carter, you threatened our favorite mullet, you had to go. We see next a behind the scenes look with Mike Cudlitz and he’s with Denai. She says it’s amazing to be back and Norman comes and gives her a big kiss on the mouth. Steven says he’s glad to be back and suggest a Glenn and Abraham romance.

Chris says Talking Dead will be back next year after every episode of #FearTWD also. Chris reads a Twitter comment about wanting to hear Abraham say mother dick again. Scott says Norman sent around a video of him pasted onto Rick’s beard face. Chris says they had some great dialogue tonight with Eugene’s hair comments. Greg says it was awesome that Eugene’s stuff got laughs. Chris then shows Morgan’s protein bars and Scott says she did take a protein bar from him.

Scott says people were aghast at it and says it’s no big deal considering all that’s going on. Chris says Josh McDermitt has so much range. Greg says it’s hard to direct Josh because he finds a way to make you laugh no matter how serious it is what you’re shooting. Greg says he’s so funny and talented. He says Mike hates carrying fake bodies with no weight so he complained about carrying fake Reg. Greg says he has a list of stuff all the actors hate so he can try not to annoy them.

Next is the live Quiz. Results at the end of this blog.
#1 What color were the balloons on the RV? Yellow, green, orange.
#2 What does Abraham yell when Rick’s plan is forced into action? It’s go time!, We’ll do it live!, Motherdick!
#3 How far away are Daryl, Sasha and Abraham leading the walkers? 5 miles, 20 miles or 50 miles.

Next, Ethan Embry is there to discuss the demise of his character Carter. Ethan says he wanted to come out zombified for this. Ethan says he auditioned many times for Walking Dead for several other characters over the years. Chris asks what he knew about Carter before he started shooting. Ethan says he’s a fan of the show and watches with friends and they sit around yelling “Carl!” Scott says they wanted someone who might be like Alexandria’s version of Rick.

Ethan says Carter is capable in that world but not the outside world. Chris says Ethan had a great death and he talks about half of his face being prosthetic then he had tubes in his clothes full of blood. He says the first time there was too much pressure and it was like Monty Python. Greg says the guy is a great walker and was tangled up by his intestines so that’s why he was stuck there. Scott says he was one who went through the tight squeeze and it pulled out his entrails.

Greg says they shot the death scene on his first day of shooting. Chris says Rick stabbed him to shut him up and because of what he said in the meeting. Now some behind the scenes info on tonight’s episode. Heath is from the Walking Dead graphic novels and Corey Hawkins who plays Heath just played Dre in Straight Outta Compton. Sarah and Abraham were driving the car Aaron used in recruiting. Andre Lincoln sys this season is ambitious and Rick isn’t taking shit from anyone.

Next we see Melissa McBride talking about the scene with Carol and Morgan and she doesn’t like him noticing how observant she is. She says Carol is intrigued by Morgan and his point of view and now she knows he’s watching her and is a smart one and not just crazy like he was before. She says second chances for some can be the last chance for others. Chris says she deserved an Emmy but the show was largely snubbed.

Chris reads a Twitter comment if Rick is the new governor and Alexandria is the new Woodbury. Scott says Morgan is working on a different level than he was before but has a certain serenity. Chris says he’s using the force. Greg talks about Abraham and his strange giddiness. He says Sasha and Abraham are kind of shifting roles and he’s being a little reckless now. Chris says he’s glad that Sasha has pulled back from the brink.

Chris asks Ethan about the part when Carter had the gun on Eugene then Rick came in. Ethan says Carter felt like he didn’t have a choice but hadn’t decided yet but Carter hasn’t killed anyone before. Now it’s a fan audience question. The woman asks Greg and Scott about Darryl and Rick not seeing eye to eye on recruiting. Scott says it was big for Darryl last season since he wasn’t into Alexandria and didn’t have a role but does with recruiting. He says it’s a big part of him now.

Chris hands the fan some protein bars and yellow balloons. Chris says they’re going to have more fan stuff this season and says the mid-season premiere will be Valentine’s Day. Now we see a look at the behind the scenes of the quarry shoot. Corey says he had no idea how he would do that and Norman says Scott is trying to break the TV. Mike says never shoot in a quarry old day. Norman says they’re coming out of the gates swinging with this one.

Chris says people think Scott Gimple looks like Hooper from Jaws. Then they take a caller who asks Greg how did he do the tight squeeze walker effect. Greg says it was 99% practical and says Kevin Galbraith was the same walker who killed Dale and had a full chest prosthetic and a face piece. He says they stuck some skin to the truck so it would rip open then things to full the guts apart. Chris says it was amazing and they keep upping the ante.

The next poll question asks if Nicholas has redeemed himself. Ethan says anyone else would have killed him but Glenn isn’t like that. Scott says the jury is out but Chris says 70% of the audience say no. Chris says the guy who plays Nicholas and porch dick Pete are both such nice guys. The Walking Dead also has an official emoji that will auto add to your tweets.

The next poll is which teen has the most teen angst? Chris, Ron, or Enid. The poll is that Ron is the one with the most angst. Then we get a preview of next week. We see Enid outside the wall and she kills a walker that’s half on the ground. Then we see a girl inside a car and she writes the letters JSS on the window. They ask what it is and Ethan wants to know what it is too. Ethan is clueless. Chris asks what’s coming this season.

Scott says a lot of action, heart breaking stuff, some tear jerking stuff. Chris asks about a 30 foot shark back to the Jaws thing. Greg says this season is relentless. Chris thanks the guests and that’s it. Kevin Smith and Paul Bettany will be the guests next week.

Quiz answers:
#1 Orange. Helium would last into the apocalypse since it’s a noble gas.
#2 We’ll do it live. The scenes were shot in an active granite quarry.
#3 20 miles. That would take 5-6 hours if walkers could walk the same pace as a living human.
