The Affair explores the emotional effects of an extramarital relationship between Noah Solloway (Dominic West) and Alison Lockhart (Ruth Wilson) after the two meet in the resort town of Montauk on Long Island. Noah is a New York City schoolteacher and Williams College alum who has had one novel published and is struggling to write a second book. He is happily married with four children, but he resents his dependence on his wealthy father-in-law.

Noah’s trial was finally beginning on tonight’s episode of “The Affair” and its looking like it’s be the trial of the year.
Cameraman, New vehicles, and even the occasional fan had all showed up on Noah’s first day in court. Although for the most part Noah appeared to be handling his unfortunate walk of shame just fine and in fact it was Alison that seemed to be struggling. Alison naturally shying away from the cameras while her husband opted to simply lower his head so that he wouldn’t look anyone in the face.
So, sure, Noah could have chosen to enter the courtroom through the back which was an option that his lawyer had given him but for once it looked like he was willing to take responsibility where usually he tends to run from conflict. And that new side to him might have been his therapy sessions ultimately taking affect.
Subsequently, when two married people leave their respective spouses for each other, it’s not always sunsets and roses. And so a baby didn’t bring Allison and Noah closer together. Instead the child has just given them even more reason to fight.
Alison was naturally a cautious parent what with what happened to her first child and Noah had begun to feel like he couldn’t relax around the baby because Alison was constantly judging his every action. So in the end both Alison and Noah agreed to couple’s therapy just so they could make things work between them. However Alison ended up missing a session and that meant Noah had to have a one on one with Marilyn played by Cynthia Nixon.
And Marilyn got Noah to a place where he was being honest with himself. He talked about his marriage with Helen and how he felt he had been a good husband for twenty years so the fact he made one mistake shouldn’t mean he wasn’t as good of a husband as his own father. His father having checked out of his marriage emotionally after his wife became ill.
Kristine Francis: So the therapist in the room wanted to discuss Noah’s relationship with his father but Noah refused to. He said he didn’t want to believe that his failed relationships or his latest attraction to another woman about his broken relationship with his father. Therefore Noah began discussing his newest book.
He originally said he wanted to write something historical, probably WWII, and that he didn’t want any women in it because he didn’t want his characters to get caught up in interpersonal relationships. And admittedly that was a dig at Allison. Noah honestly doesn’t believe he’s cut out for monogamy anymore and, if they hadn’t had a baby together, then odds are Noah would have been living in Paris attempting to get a second book out. And hopefully find the fulfillment he’s looking for through his work.
But that’s not how things worked out for him and so Noah is stuck doing the one thing that he doesn’t wishes to. He’s lying!
Noah had initially hidden his divorce from Alison because he didn’t want to move forward. At least not with her. And before she gains sympathy, it should be noted that Alison was also keeping plenty of secrets of her own.
And her daughter Joanie had to do with a lot of it.
Alison had been going back to school in order to train as a doctor when one day the course load had her feeling overwhelmed. So it had been part of her plan to just go home for a bit yet she ran into Scotty before she could make it inside. It seems Scotty believed she should help open up his own nightclub and he didn’t it so well when Alison turned him down.
However, Scotty wasn’t that upset once he got to see little Joanie for himself. As it turns out he agreed with the nanny that Joanie did look like her dad but he had a smile saved just for Alison when he said it. And it had made her so nervous that she later missed her therapy session with Noah.
And yet isn’t funny that she forgot to meet up Noah but didn’t forget that she was going to see Cole?
Cole had wanted to tell her in person that he was getting remarried and, once he did, Alison had said she was happy for him. She said he looked happy and that she wished him nothing but the best. And then afterwards she went home to Noah where she eventually agreed to stop therapy seeing as they no longer need it anymore.
So next week the DNA results are in and I for one can’t wait to see who ends up being Joanie’s actual father.
