The Americans Recap 2/4/15: Season 3 Episode 2 "Baggage"

Tonight on FX The Americans airs with another all new Wednesday, February 4 season 3 episode 2 called “Baggage,” Elizabeth [Keri Russell] and Philip [Matthew Rhys] deal with a botched mission. Meanwhile, Stan [Noah Emmerich] welcomes a Soviet defector.

On the last episode tensions simmer between Philip and Elizabeth as they disagreed over handling orders from the Centre. When Elizabeth loses key intel, Philip enlisted Annelise on a mission with an unexpected outcome. Stan tried a new approach to mending his marriage with Sandra amidst learning tough news about Nina. Tonight’s episode of The Americans kicks off with Nina in a Russian prison in Moscow, she is being held in solitary confinement. Meanwhile back in the US, Phillip is cleaning up the mess that Yousef made. He puts Yousef in another hotel room and rushes off to take care of the woman’s body. At home, Elizabeth finds Paige up late working on her algebra homework. Phillip calls and tells Elizabeth that he “has to move some files and needs her helps.” Elizabeth says she will be right there and tells Paige that she has to go. Paige thinks it is weird that Phillip works late so much, she warns her that her friend’s dad was having an affair with his secretary. Elizabeth reassures Paige that her father is not having an affair.

Back in the hotel, Phillip briefs Yousef on what he should say if anyone talks about the woman that he strangled. Yousef demands to know who Phillip is. He explains that his people are being killed in Afghanistan. Elizabeth arrives at the hotel room with a sheet of plastic and they wrap up the break the arms and legs and wrap up the body in the plastic. While Yousef is helping them, Elizabeth snaps a photograph of him with the body to use as blackmail.

In the prison Nina has a new room mate – the guards toss another woman in to her cell with her. The girl introduces herself as Ivy from Belgium, Nina rolls over on her cot and refuses to talk to her and listens to her cry and hyperventilate.

In the hotel room, Phillip and Elizabeth cram the disfigured body in to a small suitcase and Elizabeth wheels it out. Phillip tells Yousef that they have to check out now, he gives him an address and tells him to meet him there tomorrow at the indoor pool.

At the FBI Stan is tending to the woman that that they smuggled in that works at an Institute in Moscow, she handles all of their political information on the United States and Canada. Stan gives her a candy bar, and makes a phone call to get her a hotel room. She explains that she is tired, and she feels strange to finally be in the US. The next day there is a press conference, the Russian woman speaks about why she defected and explains that she couldn’t sleep at night knowing about the innocent people that were being hurt in Afghanistan.

That night Stan stops by a store and then heads down a dark alley, Oleg appears with a gun and orders him to get down on his knees. Stan warns him that the US will come after him if he kills him, but Oleg reminds him he has immunity. Stan refuses and tells Oleg that if he wants to shoot him he has to do it in the back and walks away, Oleg runs off and doesn’t pull the trigger. Stan gets in his car and heads home unharmed.

At home, Phillip and Elizabeth are getting ready to go to bed. They begin arguing about Paige again, Phillip doesn’t want her to have to stuff bodies in to suitcases. Elizabeth says that if she joins their organization she can work a desk job, she doesn’t need to be out in the field and in danger. Phil doesn’t understand why Elizabeth would want to put their daughter in danger.

Stan is shaken up after his run-in with Oleg, he goes to a payphone can calls his wife Sandra and rambles about wanting to say goodnight on the answering machine. Afterwards he drives to her house where she lives with her boyfriend, Stan tells Sandra that he almost died and she tells him that she is happy that he is okay, but she is not coming back to him.

Elizabeth is in the basement listening to a tape from her mother, Phil tells her that she can go back to Russia and see her mother if she wants to. Elizabeth scoffs that they can’t go back home. In the morning Elizabeth returns the tape to the man that brought them to her, he reassures her that her mom is happy Elizabeth is making a difference in the world.

Stan heads to work the next day, and Gaad shows him a sketch of the woman that attacked him and another agent – it’s a horrible sketch and looks nothing like Elizabeth. Stan laughs that the Russians are good at disguises. Meanwhile in Moscow, Nina’s new cell mate is trying to make conversation with her, Nina ignores her, and Ivy rambles that she is innocent.

In the basement Elizabeth and Phillip work on a game plan, they are meeting Yousef at a motel and he is going to give up the identity of some of the Afghans. Upstairs, Paige is reading the newspaper and rambling about colleges. Phil is shocked that she is up to date on current events and local news.

Later that night Phil and Elizabeth head to the motel, they are set up in different rooms and scoping the parking lot out form their windows. They watch from their posts as a man meets Yousef in the parking lot, Phil tries to snap his picture but they both jump in a car and disappear. Elizabeth announces that she is “on them” and runs to her car to follow them, Phil tries to stop her but she doesn’t listen.

Elizabeth follows Yousef and the CIA officers and they arrive at a bar, she is about to follow them inside and Phil pulls up and tells her that she is making a mistake. Elizabeth insists on going inside the bar so that they can spy on Yousef’s meeting. Phil thinks it is a horrible idea, but she is adamant. They order some drinks, and Phil tries to get closer to Yousef’s table and discretely snap some photos of their faces.

Oleg and Tatiana discuss the defector – she is doing a whirlwind press tour to discuss the Russians and how they hurt the Afghans. Stan tries to brief the woman on her interviews, she doesn’t want to talk about it though – she wants to go sight seeing. Stan tells her that is too dangerous and they don’t have the proper security, she is shocked that he thinks the Russians will try to kill her on American soil.

Nina has a visitor in prison, it’s Oleg’s father Igor, the Minister of Railways. He explains to Nina that Oleg is taking her treason charges badly and that he wants him to use his influences to save her. Nina asks Igor to give Oleg a message, and tell him that she “wasn’t pretending with him.”

Back at the office Elizabeth tries to talk to Phil about Paige, she warns him “that it is not going to just go away.” She reveals that she was recruited when she was 16 years old, she wasn’t supposed to tell anyone – but she broke the rules and she told her mother. And, her mother told her to “go and serve my country.” Elizabeth says that when she was called to duty, her mother didn’t hesitate.
