Tonight’s premiere of The Slap kicks off with Hector at his office – they have thrown him a 40th birthday party, they all remind him it is his last part with him before he is promoted to the commissioner’s office. The commissioner calls him and he talks the call in private – he learns that he is not receiving the promotion. Hector heads home and his kids are fighting in the livingroom. His wife is trying to whip up dinner. She rants to him that she had a crazy day and his mom has been calling all day asking about what she should bring to the party. His wife prods him about his promotion – Hector lies and says that the commissioner isn’t going to let him know if he has been made deputy until Monday after the weekend is over.

Hector heads in to the other room and puts on his record player and dreams about a girl named Connie. She whispers to him that “They don’t know him like” she does. They begin kissing passionately, and then his kids arguing wakes him up from his dream.

The next morning Hector wakes up, he heads downstairs to the kitchen and his two kids are fighting again. He yells at his son Adam to be nice to his sister, and takes the potato chips away from them and tells them to eat a real breakfast. He kicks the kids out and tells them to go play outside because it is a “beautiful fall day.” He finds his wife in the kitchen and wants to know why she got out of bed, she says that she has stuff to do for the big party. He goes to take his cigarettes out of the cupboard and his wife reveals that she threw them away because he needs to quit. He tells his wife that he really needs a valium – she says there are some in her office, and he can go get them. But, he needs to stop at the grocery store for her too. He barely stops at the red light and daydreams about Connie. The last time he drove Connie home after she babysat the kids, Connie leaned over and kissed him and shocked him.

Hector arrives at the clinic where Aisha’s office is, and Connie is the secretary. She follows him in to Connie’s office and says that she wants to return the book that she borrowed from him. She thanks him and hands over the book. Before he leaves, Hector invites Connie to stop by their house for the BBQ for his 40th birthday. Connie says she would love to come and will be by after the clinic closes.

It’s time for Hector’s birthday party, his friends and family begin filing in to his house. Aisha finds Hector hiding in the pantry drinking liquor. He heads out in the living-room and finds his nephew Hugo playing with the records. He freaks out on him – and his mother explains that Hugo didn’t know any better. Connie arrives, and she has brought a friend named Richie with her. Hector is obviously perturbed, but he is excited to see she brought him a gift.

Hector heads outside to cook burgers on the grill, Connie follows him outside and he caves and gives her a beer even though she is underage. Hector pays Richie to go take pictures of all of the guests so that he can get some alone time with Connie. Richie rushes off and says that he will do it for free as a birthday present.

Hector’s family ushers him inside so that he can open the gifts that they got him. They surprise Hector with an all-expense paid trip to Greece. Hector thanks his parents, but Aisha throws a fit and says that she just opened her clinic and she can’t take time off from work. Aisha storms off and Hector’s Dad tells him that Aisha needs to “back down,” and Hector mutters that they aren’t in the old country anymore and he doesn’t control his wife. He follows Aisha to the bathroom to try and reason with her – but Aisha snaps that he is going to Greece without her.

Hector heads in to the livingroom and all of the kids are arguing, he kicks them all out and tells them to go outside and eat because the food is ready. Hugo refuses to leave and Hector carries him out of the house kicking and screaming and sets him at the picnic table. Aisha begins serving the food – and Hector’s parents rant in Greek about why Aisha threw a fit over the trip. Hector’s cousin Gary agrees with Aisha that they shouldn’t have booked the trip without checking the dates. Gary stands up and gives a speech about how amazing a man Hector is.

After dinner Hector heads inside and takes a valium and chases it with a glass of wine, he watches out the window jealously as Connie flirts with another guy that was brought to the party. Richie snaps a picture of him, and he jokes that it can be used in the essay “Man Contemplating Suicide On His 40th Birthday.”

Hector heads outside and announces it is time to play wiffle ball. He sets up the bases and they get out the bats. While they are getting the game started Hector spots Connie hiding behind the deck drinking another beer, he follows her around the corner and makes small talk with her. While they are talking, Connie holds his hand – one of Hector’s sisters is smoking a cigarette and spots them canoodling.

Hugo is up to bat and he begins swinging a bat at all of the kids. His Dad Gary nonchalantly tells him to stop swinging the bat. Huge ignores him and Harry has had enough – he races down off the porch and picks up Hugo and shakes him, Hugo starts screaming in his face so Harry slaps him. All of the adults rush to the yard and a near brawl breaks out as they begin taking sides. Harry screams at Gary that he wouldn’t have to discipline Hugo and slap him if they knew how to raise a kid.

Hugo’s mom Rosie carries him inside and sobs while Aisha ices his eye. In the kitchen, Hector’s parents bicker over whether Hugo should have been slapped. Hector kicks them out and says that he needs to be alone with his family. He takes another Valium and watches Connie clean up the back yard from the kitchen window. He heads outside and tells Connie that “whatever it is they have been doing has to stop, because he loves Aisha.” Connie insists that she loves Aisha too – and she thinks that what they were doing was “disgusting.” Hector says that she should have no problem keeping it a secret them. Connie storms off.

Hector heads back to the kitchen to help Aisha clean up the kitchen – she begins rambling about the slap. Hector interrupts her and reveals that he didn’t get the job, they hired a Latina woman. Aisha hugs him and comforts him and says he is an idiot for not telling her and she would have cancelled the party. They have sex on the kitchen counter, and then Hector heads out on the balcony to smoke a cigarette and reflect on the day. He realizes that Hugo’s slap saved him from making a disastrous mistake like hooking up with Connie while his wife Aisha was just a few feet away.
