Tonight on the CW The Vampire Diaries starring Nina Dobrev, Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley continues with an all new Thursday November 19, season 7 episode 7 called “Mommie Dearest,” and we have your weekly recap and spoilers below. On tonight’s episode, Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) confront their mother with painful memories from their childhood, but Lily (Annie Wersching) reveals a dark secret she’s been harboring for over 160 years.
On the last episode, after being reunited with her former love Julian (guest star Todd Lasance), Lily (guest star Annie Wersching) hosted a dinner party to introduce him to Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) and to declare peace between her family of Heretics and the residents of Mystic Falls. Damon and Stefan found themselves at an impasse when they realized they had differing views on how to handle Julian’s arrival. At the party, Bonnie (Kat Graham) and Matt (Zach Roerig) uncovered a strange mystery involving some unsuspecting residents, while a devastating revelation caused Alaric (Matt Davis) to reach his breaking point. On tonight’s episode as per the CW synopsis, “Stefan and Damon confront their mother with painful memories from their childhood, but Lily reveals a dark secret she’s been harboring for over 160 years. Meanwhile, Enzo challenges Julian to a duel; Matt becomes entrenched in a deepening mystery involving the residents of Mystic Falls; and Valerie reveals some life-changing news to Caroline.”

#VampireDiaries begins three years from now with Damon and Alaric speeding down the road to save Caroline. They pull up at the TV station and Damon says to stop Stefan from going if he shows up since “she” wants him. It’s a trap – Damon is shot in the back with darts and goes down. Now, Caroline takes a pregnancy test and she and Alaric wait for the results. She says she’s never heard of a pregnant vampire and he says her heart beats and she breathes so maybe her body could support a baby or two.
She asks why the coven would pick her and Ric says they had to put the baby somewhere safe and chose a body that wouldn’t die since all of them were dying. Stefan tells Damon they’re hosting Thanksgiving and Damon asks what about killing Julian and says he cleared his calendar to murder him. Stefan says Julian knows so they have to be smart. He says he’s going to recruit an ally. Lily shows up at the door with cranberries and Damon is flummoxed.
His alarm goes off and Ric and Caroline check the pregnancy test. He says it’s negative then says he doesn’t understand and says Valerie was certain. She says maybe Valerie was playing a twisted game with them. She tells Alaric she’s sorry and says she knows how much he wanted this. Her phone chirps and it’s Matt. She tells him it’s not a good time but he says he and Bonnie found a bunch of people compelled at the high school and says he tranq’d them. He finds more at the Grill. He asks her to come
Stefan tells Lily that he wants to convince her that she needs to help them get rid of Julian. She asks if this is a setup and he asks her to listen. He tells her that he got Valerie pregnant back in the day and Julian beat her until the she miscarried. He says that was Lily’s grandchild that Julian murdered. Stefan says she needs to know the kind of man he is and Damon says she has crappy taste in men. Lily says Valerie is a liar. Stefan says the joke is on him and says he believed her.
Lily says she believed her for years too. Stefan pours her a drink and they toast to moving on. As soon as she drinks, she goes down unconscious. Stefan says it’s concentrated vervain and Damon says he likes his style. Stefan says he figured they’d have to do it the hard way and Damon says – best Thanksgiving ever. Bonnie and Enzo are on the hunt for Oscar’s car and she says Enzo is doing all this for Lily and says to stop treating her like a prize to be won and says it’s not the turn on he thinks.
They find the car and Enzo wonders why Julian is interested. They pop the trunk and he pulls out the spare and then finds a short sword. Bonnie says it looks familiar and wants to take it to research it. She says they need to know if he can be killed by it or wants to kill someone with it. She tells him that Julian is an unhinged ancient vampire that Enzo shouldn’t pick a fight with. When he gets sarcastic she says go ahead and try. Lily is tied up and the boys tells her that Julian has brainwashed her like her dad did.
They tell her it’s a pattern and she couldn’t see it with Giuseppe or Julian. Stefan reminds her of a Thanksgiving in 1851. Damon says that was the year their dad made him behead a pet. We see a flashback to the four of them at the table. Damon and Stefan are young. Their father Giuseppe toasts and he tells Damon to eat his dinner. Lily asks why not and his dad tells Damon to eat. Damon says that was Sammy he killed and his dad says clean your plate or spend the night in the cellar.
Damon begs his mother not to make him eat his pet but she tells him do as his father said. Damon puts a bite on his fork and eats. Now, he eats a big plate of food. Lily says it was a perfectly good meal and has nothing to do with Julian. They tell her she’s drawn to manipulative abusive men. She denies it and Damon says it’s pointless. Stefan says she’s going to sit and listen then help them kill her boyfriend. Matt tells them there are more at the courthouse and supermarket. Caroline says it’s a human blood bank.
Matt says there are no bite marks and says they’re being fed, not fed on. He says they are being fed iron rich food like it’s cattle for the slaughter. Caroline gets queasy and throws up. She says she must have had an expired blood bag. He questions her being a vamp with food poisoning. She says they need to break the compulsion but he doesn’t know what to do. Caroline says maybe someone can siphon the compulsion away and she texts Valerie.
Enzo comes to the house and Julian calls him the steerage waif. Enzo says he forgot his guitar and Julian says Lily must have thrown it out with the rubbish. Enzo says Lily loves it when he plays and Julian strikes him then stops and says he promised Lily no more bloodshed in the house. They bring Valerie to the grill and ask her about siphoning compulsion. She says Julian will just get more bodies then she mentions that Caroline is pregnant but she says the preggers test was negative.
Valerie says she can go if Caroline doubts her skills and Caroline apologizes quickly. She says maybe Valerie’s magical juju failed for a moment then asks her again to take away the compulsion. Valerie touches the first one. Julian and Enzo are out in the woods getting ready to do combat. Julian tells him bravery is knowing you’ll lose and doing it anyway. Enzo asks if boring him to death is his strategy. They each take a sword and strike at each other.
Julian laughs at him. Lily tells them the vervain ropes are burning and Damon tightens them. Damon says try being 12 and helpless and says that’s pain. We see Damon asking to be excused from the table. Giuseppe asks Lily for bourbon and he also has a cigar. He says he found money missing from his bureau and asks Damon about it. Stefan shakes his head no too. Stefan brings the lighter to his father and returns to his seat. Their dad lights his cigar. He asks which one of them did it.
He says confess now. Damon says it wasn’t them. His father says Lily tries to make them proper young men but they are failing and says a man would tell the truth. Damon says he took it and his dad says he didn’t raise him to be a thief or liar. He asks if Damon has learned his lesson and he grabs his son’s arm and pushes the sleeve of his coat up and puts the cigar out on his son’s arm. Now, Damon holds his arm and says he didn’t take the money but confessed because he was scared of what he would do to Stefan.
Lily tells them she knows what his father did to him that night. She says she heard him scream and Damon says she did nothing. He’s furious. Lily says everything she did was for them and then her neck slices open and she says someone is trying to kill Julian. She says she did a spell to bind their lives together to try and protect him. She says if he dies, she dies too. Julian and Enzo continue their sword fight and then Enzo reveals he has the sword that Julian was looking for.
He demands to know where Enzo got it. Julian runs off. Caroline compels the people to leave that Valerie brings out of their spell. The last one is gone and Caroline looks at her stomach. Matt asks if she wants to talk about the baby thing but she says it’s nothing. He says he’s never seen her puke before and she says she’s polite not pregnant. She says that defies the physics of the universe. Bo shows up and Valerie tells her to stop. She tells him Julian is evil but Bo knocks her back with magic. Matt shoots him.
Then Valerie wounds Bo and casts an invisibility spell on Caroline so Bo can’t spot her. Enzo creeps through the woods looking for Julian and comes to the cemetery. He sees blood on a stone and knows he’s near. They grapple more. Stefan gives Lily a cloth for her neck. She tells him she took the money from their father. Stefan asks why. She says his father never let her have anything and Stefan says she stayed there while he tortured his son and stayed with him five years more.
She says she planned to take them and run away but says his father was always one step ahead. We see her getting a book out by candlelight. She leafs through it. That’s where she had hidden the train tickets. Giuseppe asks where she’s going. She says it was a surprise for him to take the boys to New York. He hits her hard and says she lied, stole and tried to take his children. He says if she tries it again, he will take the boys and she’ll never see them again. She tells Stefan that Giuseppe was a monster and she knew it.
She says she just wanted to protect them. She says it was all for him. Enzo and Julian are sweating it out in mortal combat. Julian knocks the sword away and then Damon is there and cuts his throat. Damon says don’t pick a junior sword when you want to kill a billion year old psycho. Enzo says the sword was crafted for that very purpose. Julian is up and comes at Damon who puts the sword through his chest. Damon twists the knife and blood appears on Lily’s blouse and she chokes blood while Stefan watches.
Bonnie comes to Alaric’s office to get a book she left and finds him drunk. She says she can do her research there and sits down and starts leafing through a book. He says he doesn’t want to talk about it. She tells him about the sword they found and then says she found it. She shows the page to Alaric and asks if it looks like the Phoenix Stone. He says it does and she says the stone gives the sword power against immortal foes. Damon is furious that he linked his life to his moms then got into a duel.
Enzo asks what he means and he says Julian is using Lily as a human shield. Enzo asks if he killed Lily and punches him in the face. Julian is up and Damon says he should be deader. Julian throws the sword into Damon’s gut. Caroline asks Valerie if maybe she mistook the witch Latin. She says she would never forget those words. Caroline asks why she knows and says she’ll believe her and asks her to talk. She says be 100% honest and says please. She asks how Val knows so much about the spell.
She says she was pregnant before she turned and Julian found out and knew it would ruin his plans so he ended her pregnancy. She says she tried to save the life inside her but wasn’t strong enough to work the spell alone. Caroline asks why the baby would change Lily’s plan then Caroline gets that it was Stefan’s child. She says that’s the big secret she has with Stefan. Valerie says Caroline has a chance to make sure Alaric’s story ends differently and tells her to take another test.
Julian comes at Damon with a sword to cut off his head. Enzo wrestles him and then Lily is there and shouts at him. Julian says Damon tried to kill him knowing their lives were linked. Damon says it didn’t work anyway and Lily tells Julian to take her home. Julian picks up the sword and walks off with Lily. Damon scowls at Stefan and says – what? Bonnie calls Matt back and says she had to help Enzo. He says she ditched him to hang out with Enzo and he says Tyler and Jeremy may have a way to help.
He’s mad at her and hangs up. Enzo sits down beside Bonnie at the bar table and slides her a drink. She says she heard today did not go well. She asks if he’s giving up. He says Lily made her intentions clear. Bonnie says good and says he’s better off without her. Damon tells Stefan he can’t be surprised and says Stefan wanted Julian dead and he wanted to punish Lily. Damon says Lily will never stop disappointing them and Stefan says he doesn’t know the whole story.
Damon says he doesn’t want any more excuses and lies and says she faked her death, ditched them and never looked back. He says she tossed them aside with no concern what would happen to them. Damon says she deserves what she gets. He repeats that and walks out. Lily sits by the fire and Julian tells her he could use a warm bath. She asks why he was in the woods with Enzo. He says he can’t resist a sword fight and she reminds him their lives are bound. He says he’s never lost.
Lily says this is not red wine on her shirt, it’s blood. He says she was never in danger and says they were fighting for her honor. He says it was silly until Damon showed up and tried to kill him. She asks if he knew that Valerie was pregnant with Stefan’s child and then beat him. Julian says he cares about their family and would do anything to keep them together. He says he would never have done something so revolting. He tells her she must have been upset and he touches her shoulders.
He says it would destroy him if he ever hurt her and asks her forgiveness. She says of course but she’s thinking back to long ago when she sat at a mirror by candlelight treating a wound to her face. Her husband says he was drunk and not himself. He says the thought of losing her and his sons brought out a rage in him. He asks her forgiveness. Lily says, of course. Now, she says again, of course. Julian takes her in his arms and tells her to look at him. He says he loves her. He says he would never hurt her.
He embraces her but her eyes look dead. Caroline is with Alaric at a doctor appointment and they do an ultrasound. She asks how far along she is then says she’s not seeing any babies in there. She says she hears no heart beats then says she’ll give them time alone. The doctor leaves and Caroline tells Ric she’s sorry. He says he’s sorry he was desperate enough to believe this was possible. He says he put her through all this and she says she believed it too for a moment.
Valerie comes in and Caroline says the doctor is wrong then she holds her hands over Caroline’s stomach and does something. Caroline grabs the sonogram device and then Valerie says the babies were cloaked. They hear the heart beats and can see the babies. Valerie uncloaked them and now they are there. Lily comes to the door and Damon answers. Stefan comes down. She tells them they were right about Julian. She says she’s sorry.
She says she traded one monster for another but won’t let him hurt them. She says she has a plan and this time they won’t get caught. The brothers swap incredulous looks.
