On #TheWhispers, a little girl talks to no one about her mom not letting her play and saying her dad is always gone and her mom doesn’t listen to her. She says her dad is a scientist who looks at stuff. Harper is called over but she says she’s still learning all the rules. Her mom asks her friend’s name and she says Drill. Her mom asks if Drill wants to come for lunch and she says that would be amenable. The wind blows as they walk away.

Her mom gets a call but there’s some interference. The wind blows the door open and we see a guy standing across the street – he looks shaggy and homeless. She tells Liz that Harper has a new imaginary friend. Harper is tearing up her room then hears the whispers and says she knows and remembers. Her mom hears a thud and Harper starts loading heavy tools into her backpack. Her mom comes upstairs and finds chalk but no Harper and the patio door is open.

She calls out to Harper who is up in the treehouse. It’s way high. Her mom freaks and Harper says she never listens and is always on the phone. She says the game isn’t over and her mom needs to come up. She heads up the rope ladder. She tells her friend that she’s coming. She asks who Harper is talking to and she says it’s Drill who says she’s it. She says she’s not coming down until they finish the game. She tells her mom to step on the x spot and she sees a pink chalk x. She steps on it and falls through.

Her mom goes flying down and Harper says she did it. She calls out for Drill and says she won. She looks down and sees her mom isn’t moving. She fell onto stones below. Harper says to wake up, the game is over. Her mom doesn’t move and blood spreads out below her head. Next we see a kids’ ballgame. Claire is there cheering for her son – she’s an FBI agent. She gets a work call and says she’s at her son’s game. Her boss says they got a case of a six year old killing her mother and it’s premeditated.

He says because her dad works at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, it’s their case. Her boss says he thought a case would do her good and she agrees. Her son Henry runs for home and she cheers. He slides in safe at home. He’s deaf. They sign and she says she has to go to work. He agrees they can’t hang out forever and she says her dad would have wanted that. She leaves him with his grandmother. Alex thanks Claire for coming in and asks who won.

He introduces Agent Jessup Rollins and Claire looks through the crime scene photos. Rollins says the kid probably learned it on the internet. He says they were waiting on Claire to talk to Harper. Alex says they have just a short window to questions her. Alex calls Rollins back and says he knows there’s talk about Claire and says it’s the same talk about him. He tells him to rise to the occasion and do his job. We see a girl named Minx playing in the park. Noah’s mom chats with Minx’s mom.

Lena, Minx’s mom, is having some troubles with her husband and says her husband went to Africa and says she’s not sure what he wants but he’s glad he’s away from his GF. Her friend says he’s lucky she stayed, In the Sahara Desert, we see a camp and military vehicles pull up outside. A local military leader waits there. Wes Lawrence approaches the general with his assistant Peter Kim. The general says the matter is urgent then shouts out some orders.

Wes asks what’s going on and the general says he will have some questions. They head into a tent. Claire asks Harper about the game she played with her mom and she says she’s not supposed to say. Harper says he told her grown ups wouldn’t understand. She says it’s her friend Drill who’s not a kid or a grown up. She says she can’t see him and doesn’t know what he looks like. She says he speaks through the lights sometimes.

Claire asks what he says and says if she won the game, they would have a domination. Claire says that’s a big word. She says Drill knows lots of things and told her what questions Claire was going to ask. She asks if Drill is there and Harper says he’s gone but the game isn’t done yet and he’s looking for a new friend. At the playground, Minx talks to Drill and tells him she can hear him. She smiles and says she’d like to play.

Rollins asks what Claire thinks. She says something doesn’t feel right. He asks what she means. Claire says someone has coached her and says kids that age don’t talk like that. Harper’s dad shows up then and he takes her to go see her mom at the hospital. Claire tells Alex she wants more time with her but Rollins says he doesn’t. Claire sees something and goes chasing down Harper. She says Drill told her there was another boy who couldn’t win the game. Her dad takes her away.

Claire sees a bloody drawing that Harper drew and then goes searching for related crimes. She found a case of a 10 year old kid who detonated a home made bomb. She says the subject believed he had an imaginary friend named Drill and was playing a game. The kid died in the explosion. Claire says most kids know their imaginary friends aren’t real. She says some kids are easily manipulated. She says someone is getting to these kids and knows that.

Minx is in a tunnel and talks to Drill. Another kid asks if he can play and she checks with Drill who says he can. The other kid follows her into the playground tunnels. The boy runs out screaming and tells his mom he wants to go home. Minx comes out and shrugs when her mom asks what’s going on. She says to tell her what happened. Minx just looks at her. The homeless guy scribbles down Minx’s name on a list below Harper’s name. He then collapses to the ground and the list blows away.

Wes looks at fragments of a US plane. Damba says they found no trace of the pilot and wondered why a US military plane was in their borders. Electricity crackles the lights and Damba says – it’s happening again. Wes goes outside and looks around. He sees the lights going crazy and Damba introduces Dr Kharif. He says he’s a geologist. He says they need to suit up to show Wes the next thing. They head off and get into protective gear.

Wes and Peter, Damba and Kharif suit up and go look at something. Peter asks what it is and Wes just stares. It’s a huge metal structure of some sort. They creep closer to check it out. Wes sticks out his hand and touches it. Electricity crackles against his hand. It’s a rock with an airplane trapped in it and mangled up. They say it’s been there less than four months. Wes says the plane looks like it was grabbed from the sky and ripped to shreds but didn’t crash. They wonder by what. Wes looks on and wonders if it’s a who.

Claire asks Rollins what people are saying behind her back. He says people noticed she took a leave of absence before her husband died and it had to do with the assistant director. He says marriage is complicated and he’s in the midst of a divorce. He asks about her son and how he’s handling it. She says he lost his hearing two years ago then a few months ago lost his dad. They are at the psychiatric hospital to see the survivor of the bombing.

Claire wants to ask her about her son. She says a little girl tried to hurt her mother and says she was playing a game. Claire sits and you can see the scars. Claire tells her people always say you’ll get through this and it pisses her off. She says that doesn’t make sense and says you don’t even know what’s on the other side. She says she didn’t want to get through it and wanted to die then her mom toldher that grief is like a suitcase that sits at the bottom of the bed.

She says you have to take it with you every day and some days it’s really heavy and other days it’s light as a feather. She says that’s getting through it. Claire says she doesn’t know what she’s going through and doesn’t know what she would be like if she lost him. She tells Claire she’s looking at it. The homeless guy, John Doe, wakes whispering in a foreign language. The doctors discuss him. They hear him saying something like it’s too late, out of time, lights.

He says it’s too late, they’re searching for the lights. That’s all the translator can say. The mom tells Claire that she went to work and she thought Jackson was at school but he was at her office. He says he told her he thinks he’s doing a bad thing and doesn’t think it’s a game. Then she says he ran into the supply closet and then there was an explosion before she could do anything. Claire asks about Drill and she says she told her son he was too old for that and he got mad.

Claire says someone is behind Drill. She asks if Claire thinks Drill is real. Claire asks what she remembers and the woman says there was a guy across the street, a man watching the building like he was waiting for something. Rollins ask her to describe him. She says his body was covered with tattoos and there was nothing behind his eyes. The mom tells Claire to hold onto her son and never let go. John Doe wakes and freaks out on the lady doctor.

She tells him he’s safe and to calm down. He does. She says her name is Dr Benivedez and tells him what hospital he’s at. She’s surprised that he speaks English and she says they want to help him and ask his name. He says he doesn’t know. Lena asks Minx about why the boy was scared and she says he was turning and says her mom can’t understand because she’s old. Lena says to try her. Minx says when kids get older they think about stuff too much and turn.

Minx says her friend says she’ll never turn and is special. Minx has drawn a picture of the White House and a portal over it where she says the light comes from. Lena says her dad will like this but Minx says her friend told her that daddy did a bad thing and her mom is still mad even though she’s acting like it. Lena asks to meet her friend and she says she will but first she has to go to the bathroom. Lena calls and leaves Wes a message saying Minx knows what he did.

Minx tells Lena that daddy doesn’t want to talk to her. Peter shows Wes that the F22 was sent out three months ago to check out the Arctic Circle. The pilot then lost control of the plane then went off radar. The plane didn’t have enough fuel to make it to the desert. Wes looks at a photo of the pilot and says he knows him. John Doe tells the doctor he has been having dreams and can’t remember things. He says he knows she thinks he’s crazy.

She says he said something in Arabic while he was out and he says he doesn’t speak the language. She tells him what he said about searching for the lights. She says she’s going to order a CT scan. He hears a pen scratching then the clock ticking. He looks around and she asks if he’s listening. She snaps her fingers and he says he just got this feeling. He says he thinks something is going to happen. Harper is at the door and says she’s looking for her friend.

Harper looks at John Doe and says he knows where her friend is. He just stares at her. Henry plays a video game while his grandma watches when Claire comes home and hugs him. He asks her why she looks sad and Claire says she missed him today. She says a kid got in trouble today and she’s trying to help. He says he misses his dad and she hugs him. Lena runs a bath and checks her phone. The lights flicker on and off. She opens the blinds and sees the lights around them are on.

The lights flare and come back on. A little robot starts talking to Minx who was sleeping. It wakes her up and she says – not now Drill. She says she knows the game never stops. She turns on her lights and then walks down the hall. A little light up car is in the hall and she stands near it. She hears a computer come on and then heads upstairs. She goes to a desk and sits down in front of the computer. She logs onto the Department of Defense website with her dad’s password.

She asks Drill okay, now what. John Doe is gone from the hospital. The doctor says they have a runaway and says to call security. He walks down the hall in scrubs and a hat. Harper is at her mom’s bedside. Rollins sends Claire a sketch of the suspect. She says oh my god then grabs a nearby magazine. She looks at the article and the sketch. It’s Wes calling her. She asks why he’s calling and he says there’s something he needs to tell her about Sean.

He says they found Sean’s plane. She asks when and he says it was in the Sahara. She says that’s impossible and he says they’re trying to figure out how his plane got there. He says Sean’s body is missing. He says he’s now presumed missing, not dead. Claire starts crying. Peter calls Wes to come take a call from Sec Def. Claire says he has to explain but he says he has to go and hangs up on the call. He heads back down the hill to Peter.

Claire stairs at the sketch and starts crying. John Doe was in the sketch and is her missing husband. We see John Doe sneak out of the hospital. The Secretary of Defense asks Wes what’s going on and he says shows him what they found at the crash site. He says he has no idea and it could have been a rogue weapons test and shows footprints then says they were near Sean’s plane. Sec Def tells him to come home now. He says there’s something Wes needs to know ASAP.

Henry looks out the window and he says he can’t believe it – he says this is the best present in the world and thanks Drill for fixing him. He says he promises it will be their secret. He tells Drill he loves him and says goodnight.
