“The Young and the Restless” spoilers have hinted at a possible gay storyline for fan favorite Kevin Fisher (Greg Rikaart). The openly gay actor recently stated to GayStarNews that he wished TPTB at Y&R would write Kevin a gay storyline. Greg married TV writer Robert Sudduth in Maui this spring. Kevin felt the message could be powerful and explore how an established Genoa City family dealt with a family member coming out as homosexuality. It would be a great way for the show to bring back his quirky mom, Gloria (Judith Chapman).
Greg Rikaart didn’t feel a new character could have the same pull as an established character in a gay storyline. He recently said he had asked TPTB for a storyline for Kevin that would involve him falling in love with a man. Greg noted he felt it would make sense to many of his fans considering Kevin’s terrible ‘luck’ with women. Recently, Kevin and Mariah (Camryn Grimes) made love and the exchange lacked any real chemistry. The duo are great friends on the show, so why did the love scene fall flat? Could Y&R be preparing fans for Kevin having a gay relationship?
Fans are speculating that Greg will get exactly what he wants from the show. He has been with “Young and the Restless” for a long time, and TPTB loves him. Can you blame them? He is one of the biggest stars of the show. In every huge storyline, Kevin is in the midst of it all. He discovered Michael’s (Christian LeBlanc) cancer. He was brought on to help Victor (Eric Braeden) with the Paragon Project. Kevin was the one who first pointed the finger at Det. Harding… you name it and Kevin is there!
Greg is involved with Mariah, making him part of Sharon (Sharon Case) storylines. It seems likely if Kevin wants a storyline to happen, and the theme is current in Hollywood, then it has a great chance of coming true. Fans have stated they would not only like to see Kevin in a committed gay relationship on the show; they’d embrace it. Fans noted if written correctly, it could be a powerful story to tell.
The fact remains that “Y&R” is behind the times of the other daytime dramas when it comes to LGBTQ exposure. “General Hospital” and “Days of Our Lives” have gay characters in the show, and the storylines of course have NOT caused the network to lose any viewers. The shows experienced the opposite effect and many felt the homosexual characters add realistic diversity to the shows. In fact, “The Bold and the Beautiful” recently had a huge storyline with transgender Maya getting married to Rick. The storyline was executed beautifully, B&B received international acclaim, and many fans were pleased with the outcome.
It seems likely that Y&R will write Kevin a gay lover eventually, but the big question is when and who? Co-Executive producer Jill Farren Phelps noted that she was aware of Kevin’s desire to have his sexuality written in the show, and they were considering it.
