Tonight’s episode of American Gothic kicks off with Cam at an AA meeting. He lied and told his sister he was going to the hospital the night before – but instead he went and got high with his ex. Cam turns on his phone after the meeting and gets dozens of texts from his family – his dad is dead, he rushes home.

When Cam arrives, Tess and Alison are waiting for him at the house. Alison is grief stricken, but Tess seems more angry than anything. Alison wants to start planning the funeral. Tess doesn’t want to lay their father to rest until they know the truth about the Silver Bell Killer.

Tess stomps out to the shed to get the box of bells they found, the same bells that the Silver Bell Killer used to leave as a trademark. Alison and Cam chase after her, Alison wants her to drop it, obviously, this could ruin her campaign for mayor. But, the box is gone.

Their mother Madeline follows them out to the shed and tells them that she got rid of the box. Madeline sits down with the kids to explain to them about the box, apparently their dad was a true crime junkie, and he was obsessed with trying to solve crimes. Madeline says that their dad had dementia and he was deteriorating. She says that a week ago, she found him out in the shed and he was disoriented. He told Madeline, “I think I’m a bad guy,” and he showed her the box. Madeline says that he bought the silver bells off a memorabilia websites, but he was loosing his mind, and starting to think he might have been the serial killer.

Cam is suspicious, but Madeline shuts him down and says that she is just grateful that their father passed away before the dillusions got any worse and he told anyone he thought he was a serial killer. Alison swears everyone to secrecy to keep their family’s name intact.

Madeline drags out their father Mitchell’s will and they sit down to plan the funeral. Alison wants to speak at the service, Garrett emerges and announces that he wants to speak at the service too. Alison takes Garrett aside and says that she thinks it is better if she speaks on behalf of the funeral.
The neighbor Phyllis arrive at the door her cat has a cast on its tail.

She’s upset and wants to know if their family saw anything suspicious, Madeline says her husband just died, and slams the door in her face. The phone rings – it’s the hospital, they noticed something strange with Mitchell’s vital machine and what Madeline to come in to talk. Are they on to her?

Alison corners Garrett in the other room and demands to know what his agenda is. Alison’s daughter heard Garrett say “I’m going to tell them you did it” to Mitchell in the hospital. Garrett says he has no agenda, and he will leave as soon as he gets to speak his peace at the funeral.

Alison barges in to her mom’s room and says that they can’t let him speak at the funeral. She found a book full of stuff that Garrett plans on saying at the funeral, and its not nice. Alison thinks that the box of bells in the shed might have belonged to Garrett, and he could be the serial killer.

Brady is at work, working on the silver bell case. His boss wants Mitchell Hawthorne’s DNA by the end of the day, apparently he was at the construction site the day that the victim’s belt was buried in the concrete. Brady is upset, it’s the day of Mitchell’s funeral and he thinks that it is absurd to march in and demands a sample of his dead father-in-law’s DNA. His boss tells him that if he doesn’t get the DNA sample, then she is going to.

Later that night, Cam pays Garrett a visit in his bedroom – his son Jack follows him. Jack is still obsessed with death. He shows Garrett a photo he drew of Mitchell dead. Garrett laughs it off, then he stares down Cam and says that when Cam was little he had a dark streak too.

Tess is suspicious of her mother’s story. She chats with the family’s gardner Gunther, he reveals that he played chess once a week with her father Mitchell up until he died. Tess asks if her dad seemed disoriented like he had dementia, but Gunther says that Mitchell was a smart as a whip.

Madeline heads to the hospital – they tell her that they think Mitchell’s life support machines may have malfunctioned, they want to do an autopsy before the funeral to see what happened. Madeline agrees, then when she leaves the hospital she calls the funeral home and says that she doesn’t want an open casket funeral anymore, she wants her husband cremated ASAP.

It’s the day of the funeral, Brady sneaks upstairs in to Mitchell’s bathroom to try and find something with his DNA on it. He spots Gunther out the window carrying a bunch of trash bags. He doesn’t find anything with Mitchell’s DNA on it, so he heads in the other room to check in on Tess.

Brady says its weird that all of her dad’s stuff is disappearing from the house already. Tess says it is too painful for Madeline to see their dad’s stuff. Brady rushes to the church early, he wants to grad some DNA off from Mitchell’s body, he is shocked to hear that they just sent his body to the crematory. Brady hops in his car and rushes to the crematory, but when he arrives he is too late, the body has already been cremated.

On the way to the funeral, Garrett is pulled over by a cop, Alison and her campaign manager Naomi set it up. Of course, Garrett’s license is expired, so the cop brings him down to the station. Brady’s boss calls him and tells him that Garrett was arrested. Brady pulls some strings to get Garrett released in time for the funeral.

At the funeral, everyone is getting seated, Tess confronts Madeline and accuses her of lying about her Dad’s dementia. Madeline snaps at Tess and tells her that a gerbil could have beaten Gunther at chess. She hisses at Tess that she has no idea what she went through trying to take care of her father and keep his secret.

After her fight with Madeline, Tess runs off crying. Garrett follows her and comforts her. Tess cries that she just had an awful fight and she can’t take anymore. Tess remembers when she was little and had nightmares – Garrett was the only one that could calm her down, not their parents. She thanks him and hugs him.

They head inside and Garrett takes the podium at the funeral – he announces that he hated his father, and that was why he left town 14 years ago.

Garrett sees Tess in the audience and suddenly has a change of heart, and he leaves the stage and sits back down. Alison gets up in the stage and reads her perfectly crafted speech about Mitchell. During Alison’s speech, Cam and Sophie slip away to the bathroom to have sex.

While they are in the bathroom, Jack walks up on the stage, he decides to give his own speech. He says that he is sad that he will never get to see his Grandpa again. But, he is even sadder that Mitchell was cremated and he didn’t get to see his dead body.

After the funeral, they all head back to the Hawthorne house and everyone stops by to pay their respects. Alison’s husband takes her aside to give her a gift – she opens the box and it’s a music box. Alison’s campaign manager Naomi watches from around the corner as Alison kisses her husband, she’s obviously jealous.

Madeline slips away to corner Cam, she wants Jack in therapy ASAP, and she knows that Jack hurt the neighbor’s cat. She reminds Cam that he had to go to therapy too and Jack needs help now.

Meanwhile, Brady is searching the Hawthorne’s closet and still looking for something with Mitchell’s DNA on it. Brady gets a call from his boss – she says that they talked to the Morales’ daughter, and the belt wasn’t her father’s it was the silver bell killer’s belt.

Madeline corners Garrett and thanks him for not ruining the funeral, she thinks that he should leave town.

Downstairs, Brady finds an old photo of Mitchell posing with Cam when he was a teen – and Cam is wearing the silver bell killer’s belt.

THE END!
