Recap Here!

Tonight’s episode of “American Gothic” begins with Brady questioning Garret in the station about his role in the SBK killings, after his arrest based on the knife that Jack found in his cabin. A flashback shows him at a younger age covered in blood and Madeline asking him what he has done. In the present, Madeline visits the jail to make sure he hasn’t told the police anything and to tell him that she has hired him a defense lawyer.

Garret tells her that this situation is a long time coming. Madeline tries to convince Garret to say that the knife was given to him by his father. In another flashback that takes place in 2002, young Garret leaves Tess a present of a photo of the two of him, with a note saying he has to leave. In the present, Garret meets with his lawyer who has already absorbed the story Madeline has laid out about Mitchell giving Garret the knife.

Garret confides to her that the guilty must be punished and that he always thought he would end up in jail. In a 2003 flashback, Garret is shown trying to break into a man’s cabin when he is caught by the owner, who tells him if he doesn’t leave the area, he will shoot him with his bow and arrow.

The man gives him a canteen and Garret leaves. In the present, Cam calls Garret from rehab. Garret apologizes to Cam for sending him to speak to Cristina, since that is where he bought the drugs that led to his relapse. Garret tells Cam that he is proud of him for being himself and an artist.

In another flashback, Garret is shown hunting with the knife, when he again runs into the owner of the cabin. The man makes him dinner and the two get to know each other. The man tells him about an abandoned cabin that Garret can use to live in and, when the two go there, it is revealed that this is Garret’s cabin in the future.

Over the years, the man comes back to his own cabin and spends time with Garret. Alison visits Garret in jail and says she doesn’t believe Garret was an accomplice. Alison then goes to see Jennifer and tells her to unearth some dirt on her rival.

In another flashback, Garret and the man eat dinner, where he again uses the knife in front of the man. Garret and the man discuss their families; the man talks about how close he used to be to his niece that died, which makes Garret think about Tessa. Meanwhile, Tessa tries to convince Brady that Garret was framed. Brady tells Tessa to go to the jail and ask Garret if he was involved in the murders.

In a 2008 flashback, Garret begins missing his family: he goes back to see their cabin from afar and sees the family vacationing there, so he breaks in later that night to leave a note for Tessa with his phone number. The two talk on the phone and Garret is overcome with emotion.

At the jail, Tess comes to visit and asks him how the knife ended up in his cabin. She tells him that she doesn’t think he is a killer but for her own peace of mind she needs to hear him say it. He says that he can’t tell her that he has never killed anyone and she leaves in tears. She tells Brady that she is now committed to helping with the investigation, and she hands over the photo Garret left her when he left back in 2002.

Brady confronts Garret about lying to Tess all these years and tells him that they are going to use the photo to canvas for potential witnesses. In another flashback, Garret tells the man about watching his family from afar. The man has developed a bad cough and tells Garret he has congestive heart failure. In the present, Jennifer shows Alison that the lead detective in the SBK case has been meeting with the mayor in secret.

At the prison, Jack visits Garret and tells him that he saw Cristina at the ob-gyn when Tess went for her ultrasound and that she was a patient, not working there. He calls her and after a short conversation, she hangs up, and he then calls his lawyer saying he has to get out of jail because he is going to be a father.

Meanwhile his lawyer goes to the station and discovers that the cufflink they were using as evidence has disappeared, proving that the police are mishandling evidence. Garret goes to Alison to ask her to pull some strings to get him out of prison and asks her to tell Tessa he needs a chance to explain. In a 2015 flashback, Garret’s friend has collapsed and asks him to help him die: Garret suffocates the man to end his suffering.

In the present, Jennifer goes on the air and has been kidnapped by the real SBK accomplice, who kills her. In a 2002 flashback, Garret, covered in blood, tells Madeline “he tried to kill me.”
